November 26, 200322 yr Nov. 26 - The Mets reportedly have made Castillo an offer, but it's not believed to be much better, if at all, than the one on the table in Florida. The Marlins are said to have offered a three-year, $15.5 million offer, and New York's bid reportedly is for three years and $14 million, which actually would represent a pay cut from the $4.85 million Castillo earned last season. Castillo's agents met with Mets officials Monday night before heading to Florida to continue negotiations with the Marlins. However, reports indicate another team also has an offer on the table for Castillo, but it's not the Yankees. The Palm Beach Post has reported the Cardinals are interested in reuniting Castillo with Edgar Renteria, his former Marlins teammate, but it's not known if St. Louis has made a bid. ESPN Insider Man, the Mets low-balled him! I mean, it's not much less than our offer, but still... One interesting thing is that yesterday only the Mets were listed as interested in Urbina. Now there's 5 teams listed and we're at the top, despite no explanation (other teams are the Mets, Cubs, Red Sox, and A's).
November 26, 200322 yr I like this. I am pretty sure that if the money is close or in this case less than the Marlins offer... he'll take the Marlins offer. As for Uggy, maybe the Lee deal made us start moving on trying to bring him back?
November 26, 200322 yr Author I like this. I am pretty sure that if the money is close or in this case less than the Marlins offer... he'll take the Marlins offer. I think we've got a window to sign him here before he talks to the Cardinals (who scare me). We need to take advantage of it.
November 26, 200322 yr I didn't even know we were considering signing Uggs. I remember reading an article a week or two ago in which his agent complained that the Marlins hadn't even bothered to make a phone call. I hope we can keep Luis, but I really don't think he wants to come back to us. Hopefully he wasn't sending a message when he skipped all of the victory parades.
November 26, 200322 yr According to a source close to the negotiations, the Marlins also improved their offer to free-agent second baseman Luis Castillo after he received a three-year offer from the New York Mets for roughly the same $15.5 million the Marlins extended two weeks ago. A vesting option for a fourth year at $6 million was added Tuesday, pushing the Marlins' offer to a potential $21.5 million. From the Sun-Sentinel. All because of departure of Lee. This looks like a deal Castillo will take, eventhough I am not thrilled with giving him a 4 year deal with too many questions about his hip in my mind. I also think we could spend the money elsewhere, but that is just me. Also, because of the Lee deal, Burnett is offered a deal and will definetly be on board. Not that any of us ever felt otherwise.
November 26, 200322 yr Author 4 years, 21.5!? He HAS to sign that...doesn't he? I doubt the Cardinals can top that.
November 26, 200322 yr 4 x 21.5 is unbelievable. wtf are they up to? he'd jump (if the hip permits) at that offer. they just keep getting closer and closer to saying bye-bye to pudge.
November 26, 200322 yr They know what they are doing guys. Welcome back Luiy I thought we had lost you there for a little while
November 26, 200322 yr What did I say, even before the Lee deal? Castillo would remain a Marlin. Plain and simple.
November 26, 200322 yr If it comes down to this...... Luis Castillo and Mike Lowell > Vladimir Guerrero Anybody disagree?
November 26, 200322 yr New Yorkers pay more in taxes than any other state. In New York City taxes are even higher. Approximately 10%. When Cliff Floyd signed with the Mets before last season he actually took a cut in pay from what he earned the previous season with the Marlins. In 2002 Cliff (while he was with the Fish) earned approx $6.50 mil. When signed with the Mets for 2003, unable to extort a $10 mil deal from the Fish, he signed for the same $6.50 mil. The difference? Florida has no state income tax. As an employee working in New York City he paid approx 10% in taxes, or $650,000. Therefore, before Federal taxes he earned $5.85 mil. Why am I pointing this out? Because when factoring the value of a contract offer from the Mets (or Yankees) to Luis or any other Marlin, without question the issue of taxes plays an important part in determining where he wants to play. $5.50 mil from the Mets (before federal income taxes) is really $4.95 mil. Over three years he would have paid give or take $1.50 mil more in taxes than he would in Florida. Being a state with state income taxes is a real boon to sports franchises in this state. It is a competitive ADVANTAGE for the Marlins in all trade talks.
November 26, 200322 yr If it comes down to this...... Luis Castillo and Mike Lowell > Vladimir Guerrero Anybody disagree? Nope.
November 26, 200322 yr I'm concerned about going that far (4 year) with Luis on a deal. . .But I'll be glad we will have hgim back
November 26, 200322 yr How come no one is raising hell about Castillo not taking a hometown discount?
November 26, 200322 yr I'm concerned about going that far (4 year) with Luis on a deal. . .But I'll be glad we will have hgim back What's there to worry about? It's an option. You either pick it up or you don't.
November 26, 200322 yr Luis Castillo and Mike Lowell > Vladimir Guerrero ill take my cake.... and maybe eat it too :shifty
November 26, 200322 yr Author How come no one is raising hell about Castillo not taking a hometown discount? Well, if you're making this comment because of Pudge, I think it's pretty clear that most Marlins fans would tend to be more loyal to Luis than Pudge. I know I am. Plus, Luis hasn't had his agent making ridiculous demands in the press and isn't off yachting somewhere so we can't talk to him. It's hard to discount when the asking price is already reasonable.
November 26, 200322 yr $5mil a year is reasonable... why would be up in arms about that? arguably, $5mil is reasonable for Pudge too
November 26, 200322 yr Being a state with state income taxes is a real boon to sports franchises in this state. It is a competitive ADVANTAGE for the Marlins in all trade talks. that's such an EXCELLENT point.... i totally forgot about that one. but is total income tax in NYC really 10%? i find that a little hard to believe.
November 26, 200322 yr arguably, $5mil is reasonable for Pudge too If Pudge resigns for 5 mill a year, I would be beyond shocked.
November 26, 200322 yr arguably, $5mil is reasonable for Pudge too If Pudge resigns for 5 mill a year, I would be beyond shocked. i didnt say he would do that.... i just said that it was reasonable
November 26, 200322 yr $5mil a year is reasonable... It's only a $150,000 pay raise. arguably, $5mil is reasonable for Pudge too That's all he's really worth, at least...

November 26, 200322 yr If it comes down to this...... Luis Castillo and Mike Lowell > Vladimir Guerrero Anybody disagree? agreed and probably cheaper.
