October 3, 201114 yr No. He had offers from a number of teams. He came here over the others because of Edwin, maybe. But he wasn't retiring. I always smile at this because, while its true, it ironically turned out that he sucked donkey nuts while playing under Edwin, and then flourised once Edwin resigned.
October 3, 201114 yr Err he continued to suck donkey balls for like a month afterwards. I don't think a pitcher sucking donkey balls like that has anything to do with a manager, to be honest. When the pitcher is physically capable of pitching like he did at the end of the season but he pitches like he did at the beginning of the season... it's on him.

His turnaround more or less started in June, did it not? Edwin resigned in June. He wasn't bad in July, a month later.

You're incorrect. 6.85 ERA with Edwin over 14 starts. 1.85 ERA with Jack over 18 starts. Two straight starts without giving up a run immediately after Edwin left, and only one start with more than 3 runs.
October 3, 201114 yr Okay I might've been wrong... for some reason I was thinking Edwin left in the first week of June... which is stupid because the whole mess was June which made him leave. But my point wasn't really that. The real point I was getting at was that the disaster that was Javy Vazquez at the beginning of the season was Javy Vazquez and Javy Vazquez only. A manager doesn't change a pitcher from the worst pitcher in baseball to the best pitcher in baseball. It just doesn't work that way, unless Edwin was dropping laxatives in his water before each start.
October 3, 201114 yr The person who deserves the most credit for Javy's turnaround (besides Javy himself) is probably St. Claire.
October 3, 201114 yr No. He had offers from a number of teams. He came here over the others because of Edwin, maybe. But he wasn't retiring. Yes, he had offers. But he was considering retirement if the right offer didn't come through for him. At least every report I read at the time said so.
October 3, 201114 yr Yes, he had offers. But he was considering retirement if the right offer didn't come through for him. As is demonstrated by the fact that he took about 3 million LESS (Yankees) to play for the Marlins for the only reason that counted for him: we are the closest to home, making our offer the only "right offer" for purely personal reasons. Pretty clear that if he plays at all in '12, it'll be here and nowhere else. Well, maybe Tampa would have an outside chance. 50-50. He's set, he has plenty of money. The only possibility of him returning is if he becomes convinced that with the new stadium and a bunch of FA signings/trades/vastly increased payroll that we will be a play-off team. Which is why I figure that he hedges when he comments. Very smart. Give it a few months and see what happens. Does anyone know his wife? She's probably the key to the whole deal.
