Florida Marlins History Books/DVD

Featured Replies

Has anyone heard rumors about a Florida Marlins End of the Franchise merchandise comin out. A nice coffee table book or something like a media guide with history and stats from the franchise would be cool. A visual 2-3 hour DVD would be pretty awesome to if it included our complete history.

I doubt it, as it would take away from the birth of the Miami Marlins. Plus, apparently the Florida Marlins aren't worth celebrating in any shape or form.

A&E Home Video is typically the best at making DVDs for that kind of stuff. They've done a bunch of World Series compilations for other teams. The fact that we've never seen anything like that for the Marlins pretty much says that there is little to no market for it.

Nobody is going to go through the trouble of producing and distributing something when it's likely that very few people will buy it.

If you look on Amazon, there are multipe books about the Marlins, including one about how we "bought the 1997 World Series" which can be bought used for 13 cents.

As far as videos, there is already a video about the start of the Marlins franchise: http://www.amazon.com/Florida-Marlins-1993-Great-Beginning/dp/6302961386 (only VHS as far as I know).

Plus, there are 2 World Series DVDs. That pretty well covers it. Is there really much else from our history you would want to re-live?

A coffee table book about the Orange Bowl site would be kind of cool though if someone had construction photos of the original OB, photos of it's history, the OB being torn down, and then photos of construction of the new Ballpark. That's something that I would consider buying.

Those DVDs you talk of were actually give-a-ways. First at games, then they seemed to be in everything the team would send season ticket holders over the year(s) until they apparently ran out of them. There is also a one song CD that Gloria Estafan made after the '97 series, and that she sang during the party at Joe Robbie celebrating that championship. I don't remember if that was ever a give-a-way or if I actually bought it. But if you want to feel nostalgic it's a pretty good song.

As far as a written history, there are several books out there, as you stated. Some good, some bad. But if a book of the firsts, lasts, mosts, and entire stats is wanted, just buy the 2011 Media Guide.

Correction......

Wait and buy the 2012 Media Guide. That would cover everything that happened at Joe Robbie through the 2011 season. They usually come out a month or so after the season starts.

When I say coffee table book, I think a nice large book containing pictures from the history of the team with captions and small excerpts about the team.. I'm also mostly referring to our complete history on these sort of things. I know plenty about some of the older books that have been out for a while but that's not really what I'm looking for. I have all the media guides and will definitely pick up next years as well.

Maybe some don't care but I would like to have our complete history in book form or in DVD form instead of having to piece it together.

Technically, the '97 WS DVD was the giveaway (and was just a DVD version of the original VHS WS video available in retail outlets). I'm not saying the '03 WS DVD hasn't been given out by the Marlins since its release (as a season ticket holder, you'd have far more knowledge of this than me), but unlike the '97 video (which is only available as a giveaway), the '03 video has always been available on DVD for purchase. I bought mine at Best Buy when they came out at the end of '03.

Actually they are distributed to Media in Spring Training and it takes a month or so before you can find one on Ebay, so technically I guess you're right!.

As for a Marlins History, its only the name thats being changed, I doubt very seriously that the Angels with all of their renamings has done anything for that, its still the same franchise.

It would be nice if "The Show Is Coming", as well as "A Great Beginning", was made available in some digital form (DVD or DL). Both are great programs that document how the Marlins came to be, and it's a shame that they've been allowed to fade from memory.

According to the Opening Day program for last year, there is a section specifically about the media guides under the A to Z guide. It says in there that a media guide can be bought for $12. at the stadium or at the Marlins en Miami store or with the Merchandising Department. Dont know if that happened but thats what the Program says.

As far as the team name switching, Loria and Co are certainly pushing that this is a new team with new history. He's been quoted in the past saying so. Yes its still the same franchise but if the owners are going to try to emphasize that this is a new team then a Coffee table book or Dvd of the teams history would be cool.

I didn't know they were available at Best Buy at that time. Seemed like every thing we ever got from the team for a couple years had one of those '03 DVDs in it. Even things we got from the Community Foundation would include one.

And now that you mention it, I think we have the '97 version on VHS and DVD. But I boxed up all our VHS tapes and stuck them in the "Land of Out-Of-Sight-Out-Of-Mind." More commonly referred to as the attic.

I'm a little more interested in if that Estefan CD, "Go Marlins", was ever released outside of the stadium. Says right on the front of the CD case "Proceeds to benefit the Florida Marlins Foundation which supports youth, education, and baseball in South Florida." (note: notice how I spelled her name right this time? CD right in front of me. lol)

They used to send the media guides to season ticket holders for free. And it would be about a month or so into the regular season. But they stopped doing that a couple years ago. However, I don't doubt what you say. Distributing them to the media during ST makes sense. And since it's only been a couple years I have had to buy one, I can only speak of that time period.

I think they say that for one reason. $$$$ As in selling merchandise. And maybe for their reasoning to unretire #5 for LoMo to wear. Yet they move the championship flags there and make a big deal out of it. IMO, if they truely consider this a "new team with a new history" then they shouldn't be flying the flags from that other team that used to be in South Florida. Do not upset the Baseball Gods with hypocrisy!!!

Well, they can hardly totally disavow history. Not surprising that they would bring along the few positives like WS wins from the old to the new, while trying to purge any memory of junk like a mediocre stadium, the worst stadium lease in all of sports, lousy revenue streams and horrid attendance.

I'd do the same and more power to them. It's a new day, almost like an expansion team, but not quite, they've won two WS.

They're "Un-retiring" # 5?!?!? Is that for real? What's next are they going to give someone #42?

Just rumor so far. Couple months back there was a short clip about LoMo wanting that # and Samson saying something about unretiring it. There was also a thread here about it. Seems like I was about the only one against it happening.

Who wore #5? Conine? Dawson? I suppose I should be ashamed that I don't remember. 42 is Jackie Robinson right? I remember that somehow.

I think it was the team's first president. He died before the team actually ever took the field.

Yeah it was for Carl Barger. The innagural patches worn on the field in 93 read "Carl". His favorite player was Joe DiMaggio which is why 5 was retired. I think that's also why DiMaggio threw out the first pitch in 93

Correct on every thing. Mr Barger was instrumental in bringing a team to South Florida. He collapsed and passed away during the '92 Winter Meetings. #5 was retired in his honor on April 5, 1993. And it should stay retired.

I don't know where to check this, but......I think Dimaggio also threw out the first pitch for the first season that John Henry owned the team because he was Henry's fav player. Not 100% on that, just a blip in my memory.
