Source: Marlins interested in former Tiger Guillen

Featured Replies

The Miami Marlins are courting superstar free-agents Albert Pujols and Jose Reyes this off-season, but they haven’t dismissed the possibility of making more modest offensive upgrades, as well.

To that end, the Marlins have shown interest in veteran switch hitter Carlos Guillen, according to a major-league source.

Guillen just completed a four-year, $48 million contract with the Tigers in which he averaged only 60 games over the final three seasons due to injuries. He was out for the first half of the 2011 season while recovering from left knee microfracture surgery and missed time down the stretch because of left wrist and right calf injuries. But he’s a valuable role player when healthy, capable of playing first base, second base, third base, and left field.

Guillen, 36, could assume the infield utility role shared by Wes Helms and Jose Lopez last year, while serving as a late-inning pinch hitter when he doesn’t start. New Miami manager Ozzie Guillen (no relation) is very familiar with Carlos Guillen, having managed against him in the American League Central for the past eight seasons.

Well he certainly would have to take a huge paycut to come here. But he is 36, and he can't expect a huge contract. One year at $ 6 million might be worth it, but I doubt he signs for that little.

with his injuries and lack of production he would be lucky to get 6 million. though sizemore did get 5 million but is 6-7 years younger.

Age and injury concerns would have to bring his price tag way under $6 million for this to be an attractive deal
