TheU
Yunel Escobar of the Toronto Blue Jays got suspended 3 games for writing an offensive slur "tu ere maricon", which translates to "you're a f*ggot" on his eyeblack. He says he did it for fun and didn't mean anything by it. I can understand something like that, but he has to know what the words mean, and that it would cause trouble. Dr Beinfest
Just more evidence to support the idea that these professional players are only human... And there's no hope for humankind.
AeroFishOne
I always heard that Yunel was like Hanley with less talent. Rumor or maybe confirmed that he wasn't a good teammate in Atlanta.

AeroFishOne
Yeah I say it would be a even bigger deal in english since about every english fan would know what it means.
Entendu
Lol it's not a big deal. Would it be if he wrote it in English? No lol What if he said it in an interview? Like just randomly blurting out 'you're a fag!' to no one in particular during an interview? I think that'd be awesome lol.
TheU
Dude, if he wrote "your a fag" on his eyeblack, it would be the leading story on sportscenter. People are dismissing it because it was in spanish.
Entendu
And, by the way, it's 'eres,' not 'ere.' That's a bigger crime. Who misspells that?

Sure, but that doesn't mean you can't have a laugh at it. The whole 'out-of-the-blue' part makes it funny, in my opinion.

I also think you're securely in the minority here, for whatever that's worth. Not sure what's up with all the "lol" either. Odd posts here by you. Laugh if you want -- even though I think that's a strange reaction -- but you said it's not a big deal. That's a different question. Why is it a strange reaction? Do you know how random it would be for a baseball player to do an interview and randomly just say 'you're a fag!' to no one at all? I'd laugh at the stupidity and randomness of it. But yea, it's also not a big deal. He didn't direct his comment towards anyone. From the onset, it was clearly a joke - and for the sensitive bunch, he apologized and went on to say he had gay friends whom he respects. mystikol87
I don't think there's anything funny about it. It's random, that's true. It's not a heinous crime, but it's stupid, offensive, and not funny to me. Something that is clearly a joke can be in bad taste/rude/offensive/etc. That doesn't automatically excuse it. Come on, now. Gay friends whom he respects? Ooh, cool, now it's totally justified and none of those I mentioned above! Come on, now.

I guess we differ in opinion, because I don't believe it to be in bad taste. If it offends someone, then they need to get thicker skin. It wasn't directed at anyone, and it's a common enough insult for it to lose all literal meaning among those who aren't overly sensitive to words. So, when you say it, it kind of brings that all back up. But, you know, use it. By all means, get your laughs. But now you know what it means." The terrible memory the word 'fag' brings up to most is probably just a bunch of idiots shouting it to them from a moving car, or some religious group telling them that God hates them. But before that quote you posted, that same guy says 'I think you should use whatever words you want. When you use it on stage, I can see it's funny and I don't care.' He probably wouldn't care about what Yunel Escobar said either.
