February 5, 201313 yr I'm surprised that Arizona retired Luis Gonzalez's number. ??? He wasn't good enough for a long enough time there to warrant a retired number.

Chalk it up to being a young franchise but he's arguably the best/most popular player they've ever had and played there as long as anybody. Not to mention the ring. http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/ARI/leaders_bat.shtml
February 6, 201313 yr I'm surprised that Arizona retired Luis Gonzalez's number. Maybe the way they retire a number is the same way we retire a number.

Really, Conine's 19 should be retired. I'm not sure anyone else deserves it except maybe Dawson's 8 and Perez' 24 because of their years on the front office staff- and Dawsons contributions to South Florida Baseball.

Not to mention the ring. http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/ARI/leaders_bat.shtml That's probably their thought process but I don't see it as being justifiable. If you look at those stat leader boards, Gonzalez really just had 2-3 dominant seasons (where he was likely roided up) that solidified his position at the top. So I think it's mostly a symptom of the age of the franchise. I'm glad that the Marlins didn't make the rash decision of retiring numbers of guys like Sheffield, Castillo, or Conine.
February 6, 201313 yr Retiring numbers is fucking stupid. I think it's acceptable for LEGENDS. Wayne Gretzky. Michael Jordan. etc. Every last player that makes it to the hall of fame shan't be retired, or else given time you're going to run out of numbers.
February 7, 201313 yr Seems to me that each team sets its own standards for retiring numbers and that's how it should be. Retiring numbers can be about players who have meant something special to a team and its fans over many years, regardless of whether they have HOF credentials. I could see the Marlins retiring Conine's number before they retire Sheffield's.

Why is it some people need things spelled out for them? The Marlins believe retiring a number only means it can be used at a later date if someone wants it.
February 7, 201313 yr We had one retired number for someone who didn't even play and only because it was the number of his favorite player, before the franchise even got to play a game. It honestly should have been a plaque from the beginning. It's not like if 19 got retired, in 10 years some rookie will come up and be all, "I want 19!" and it'll be given to him. There was actually reason behind pulling the 5 off the "retired numbers" list.
February 7, 201313 yr In the 2513 off-season, they'll be arguing about retiring 6.4 or un-retiring 3.7, having long ago run out of round numbers less than 100.
February 7, 201313 yr "We are gathered here to retire the number of Gregodante Intaculus, nobody will ever again wear |-96|." *standing ovation*
February 7, 201313 yr Gregodante Intaculus just sounds like a roider. Actually in 2513 roiding wont be a problem -- genetically engineering baseball players from birth will be. Gregodante Intaculus sounds like a gentically engineered baseball player (or... a Genie).

Arguing whether it should have been retired in the first place is irrelevant. And yes, it is like 19 being retired and then unretired at a later date. The history of this team means nothing to management except when it is to their benefit to bring it up. Like the two championships.

Earth league or Mars league?Let's not even... the last thing I want to hear about is a bunch of people bitching about interplanetary league play and how it means nothing, and how Earth players are more talented and batting with Martian gravity is a load of shit...

Looks fine hanging in my closet. Will break it out for a couple ST games and for Opening Day. Still haven't gotten that stuff to get rid of the "shadow" tho. Need to do that.
February 10, 201313 yr Actually, North Milky Way League. And during Spring Training there will be an IGBC (Intergalactic Baseball Classic).
