December 3, 200322 yr here's a bit of it: October turned to November, and now to December, but one thing hasn't changed for the Marlins: They keep making all the right moves. They keep humming along on more brains than bank. They keep sticking to their word and blueprint, too, which are perhaps the most relevant points of all. This means you can officially let 1998 go. That's right. Breathe in. Breathe out. Let it go. The bogeyman of that World Series past -- the threat of another binge dismantling -- is not relevant anymore, except toward H. Wayne Huizenga's sports legacy. After a season in which team owner Jeffrey Loria kept backing word with deed, he started this offseason by saying the Marlins wouldn't be broken up and already has signed enough checks to prove it. Luis Castillo returns. Mike Lowell returns. And on Tuesday, in the most fascinating case, Pudge Rodriguez received the kind of multiyear offer that in normal baseball Decembers would be dismissed by Rodriguez's uber-agent, Scott Boras. But this isn't a normal December, and so the Marlins' two-year, $15 million-$16 million offer to Rodriguez might be just enough meal ticket. here's the entire Sun-Sentinel article
December 3, 200322 yr Is it just me, or does it feel AWESOME to actually sign star FA's in the offseason instead of letting them walk?
December 3, 200322 yr I wrote a letter to the author of the article.... Dear Mr. Hyde, I have been a Marlins fan since the very beginning. I was ecstatic in '97 when we won the World Series, but when my team was dismantled, I was broken hearted. There is no doubt that I was afraid of losing my team again this year. It hasn't really hit me yet until I read your article, "Marlins pudge ghost of '98". Thank you for an amazing article! You have definitely made this Fish fan's day! Sincerely, Miriam Fernandez
December 3, 200322 yr "Meanwhile, the best team in baseball for the past four months of the regular season -- not to mention all through October -- has lost only Derrek Lee right now from the everyday lineup. OK, Juan Encarnacion is gone, too."
December 3, 200322 yr Author honestly though, Enc was getting squeezed out anyway with the arrival of Conine & Cabs. Unless Lowell was dealt (so Cabs could be moved), there was no room in the outfield. Doesn't diminish what Encarnacion meant to the team, he made big contributions throughout the season. It's just that they were able to sign Conine for multiple years at an affordable price.
December 3, 200322 yr WOW. Great article that will continue to increase the goodwill this franchise has going.
