Posted July 11, 201311 yr The Marlins and sixth overall pick Colin Moran have agreed to terms, a source who has spoken with the Marlins confirmed. The deadline to sign 2013 draft picks is Friday at 5 p.m. A third baseman out of North Carolina, Moran is believed to have signed for the assigned slot value of $3,516,500. This is only the third time the Marlins have shelled out more than $3 million for a pick. Second overall selection Josh Beckett in 1999 received $3,625,000. Adrian Gonzalez got $3 million after going first overall in 2000. Moran, who is likely bound for the Class-A short season New York-Penn League as a junior helped the Tar Heels reach the College World Series last month. He hit .348/.478/.557 with a school record 86 RBI during the regular season for the Tar Heels. When the Marlins drafted him last month, vice president of scouting Stan Meet said of Moran: "He’s one of the premier college bats in the country. We were thrilled he got down to us. He fits a need, but also fits us from an ability standpoint…[Third base] was a need for us, but you always try to get the best guy you can take and he was the next pick on our board. We didn’t slip down to take him and go past anybody. He really fits perfectly." It doesn't appear the Marlins will sign either their Compensation Round A pick (prep left-hander Matt Krook) or third rounder Ben DeLuzio, a shortstop out of The First Academy in Orlando. Krook failed his physical and is opting to attend Oregon rather than agree to a discounted deal. DeLuzio looks set to honor his commitment to Florida State. Here’s a look at how the Marlins' top signed picks are doing: RHP Trevor Williams (second round, 44th overall): Williams has made one start in the Gulf Coast Rookie League and two in the short-season Class-A New York Penn League with Batavia. He is a combined 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA with two walks and three strikeouts in seven innings. RHP Colby Suggs (Comp Round B, 73rd): In six games (seven innings) between the GCL and NYP, Suggs is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA, three walks, nine strikeouts and two saves. OF K.J. Woods (Fourth, 112th): Woods through eight GCL games was 10-for-27 (.370) with six runs, two doubles, three walks, five strikeouts and two steals. He has a .452 on-base percentage and is slugging .444. C Chad Wallach (Fifth, 142nd): Wallach went straight to Batavia in the NYP and through 13 games has a .186/.300/.186 slash line with one RBI, six walks and 13 strikeouts in 43 at-bats. OF Ryan Aper (Sixth, 172nd): In 14 games for Batavia, Aper is 5-for-44 (.114) with a double, triple, homer, five RBI, five walks and 20 strikeouts. SS Justin Bohn (Seventh, 202nd): Bohn through his first 47 at-bats with the Muckdogs has a .149/.216/.170 slash line with a double, three RBI, four walks and nine strikeouts. 2B Iramis Olivencia (Eighth, 232nd): A native of Jacksonville, Olivencia went 5 for his first 39 (.128) with two triples, two RBI, three walks and 19 strikeouts in the GCL. SS Aaron Blanton (Ninth, 262nd): In 10 GCL games, Blanton is 7-for-26 (.269) with four doubles, three RBI, seven walks, six strikeouts and a .424 on-base percentage. 1B Carlos Lopez (10th, 292nd): A teammate of Wallach’s at Cal-State Fullerton, Lopez through 46 NYP at-bats is hitting .152 with a triple, four RBI, five walks, four strikeouts and a .431 OPS. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/miami-marlins/marlins-blog/sfl-miami-marlins-colin-moran-draft-blog-20130711,0,3372288.story?track=rss&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+marlinsblog+%28Florida+Marlins+%7C+Sun-Sentinel+Blogs%29
July 11, 201311 yr They used the what would have been Nolasco money my guess. If that's true, then pray for us. No team should be using salary relief to sign a FIRST ROUND PICK to a SLOT VALUE deal..
July 11, 201311 yr I was half joking. And it's not really THAT big a deal :lol Most likely that money saved will be used for the arbitration guys.
