December 5, 200322 yr Check out his minor league numbers (AAA) in 2000 and 2001 before becoming our backup catcher: 2000 67 Games: .335 BA, 14 HR, 45 RBI 2001 103 Games: .336 BA, 27 HR, 90 RBI Thats awesome. I remember when Dombrowski trade for him his batting average was around .250 in the minors and hadnt bloomed in the minors into the player the Astros thought he would be.
December 5, 200322 yr Let's not forget he batting .263 in Winter League at the moment. I'm not saying he is going to be bad, I'm just saying that with Pudge you know what your getting, Castro may be good or may suck.
December 5, 200322 yr Author All this guy needs is some playing time...Remember how Derrek Lee started off with the Marlins and improved b/c we gave him a chance...plus i'll be happy if he hits .250 w/ 20 HR and 70 RBI

If Pudge doesn't stay, and Castro put those numbers, I'll be happy. But some here are calling for 35+ HR, etc.
December 5, 200322 yr But some here are calling for 35+ HR, etc. 35 HR's from Ramon is pushing it... But 25-35 in 145 games would definately be possible.
December 5, 200322 yr I am absolutely amazed at the fantasy world some of you kids live in that you think Ramon Castro could hit 35, even 25+ homeruns in a season. When major league pitchers have a chance to pitch to him a few times and the word gets around he'll be lucky to stay above the Mendoza line over the course of a season. The guy can barely hit .250-.260 in PR for god sakes against the equivalent of AAA pitching, what do you think will happen when he faces the best pitching in professional baseball? The only place he'll ever hit 30 homers is in the Pennsylvania Penal League.

When major league pitchers have a chance to pitch to him a few times and the word gets around he'll be lucky to stay above the Mendoza line over the course of a season. That's what I'm worried about. Big Ramon just looks like a guy who has holes in his swing, and I'm worried once he gets enough ABs, pitchers are going to figure those weaknesses out and exploit them. We'll see... Hopefully, he's innocent of those charges, hopefully the jury sees it that way, and hopefully he erases my doubts.
December 5, 200322 yr I still dont like Ramon. I wouldnt be objected to platoon Red with someone else.
December 5, 200322 yr Pudge leaving means we have Castro and Redmond behind the plate. I like that idea, as long as Castro's legal problems are cleared up, we have no problem. Both are very capable offensive and defensive catchers and compliment each other well. Redmond plays a third of the games and Castro plays the remainder. All this for under $3 million. Bon Voyage Pudge!
December 5, 200322 yr Castro might rise to the occasion. But, not if he's in jail. Go ahead, laugh at me again... Benito Santiago, classy veteran, original Marlin, still able to throw out runners from his knees. Gutsy, healthy and smart. Over the hill? Yes. Worth one or two years with Redmond backing up? Hell, yes.
December 5, 200322 yr Redmond is not young anymore and his load when he was main catcher and castro was backup was not much more than 40 Redmond/60 Castro.
December 5, 200322 yr Santiago has been mentioned once or twice. Would possibly work out nicely, have him get about 100-120 games and red with the other 40-60...althougth you might limit Benito to 90-100 at his age... Should be able to secure him for what 3 million or so?
December 5, 200322 yr I also wouldnt object to a Brent Mayne or a catcher like him...although I would need to check out their splits and all first.

Jeff Torborg (former ML catcher), Jack McKeon (former minor-league catcher) and Ivan Rodriguez (future HOF catcher) have all been quoted saying they believe that Ramon Castro will be an All-Star if/when he gets a chance. I'll take their word over yours, thanx.
December 5, 200322 yr Um...no. Dont want Santiago - more than a year and a million bucks. Castro/Red will be more than adequate for us to make our run - remember, Castro was Fudge's backup.
December 5, 200322 yr Redmond was Rodriguez's backup. Again, ONLY because of the option to hit-and-run. Why do you think he always hit third, behind the best two hit-and-run options?

December 5, 200322 yr Redmond and Castro are two very good catchers, one thing the Marlins have always had is depth behind the plate. It's the only position we let fully develop and come up to the Big club ready to play.
December 5, 200322 yr lol I fail to see the humor. Inlighten me. The word is "enlighten" not "inlighten" first of all. And I was laughing because it was so pleasant around here without your rude and obnoxious posts for a few days. Maybe it was just hours, but it was wonderful whatever it was. And it surely wasn't long enough.
