What chu talking about Willis?

The Marlins need a stadium deal in place by March. Otherwise it will take two more years to find enough local cash to make it work. By then Mike Lowell will be gone and our pitchers will be demanding tons in arbitration and free agency. And that's a whole three years before the team would even be able to move into a new stadium. Our team has no future to look forward too.

So, yeah, FVCK HUIZENGA TOO! What the heck does that have to do with Pudge not coming here?

Boras/Pudge Storyline

1) Boras thinks he can get more than 10 million a year and a 5 year contract and tells Pudge to wait for other offers

2) After Dec. 7 best deal that comes there way is a 2 year 14 million deal from the Orioles

3) Pudge accepts the deal and thinks "Darn i should've accepted the Marlins offer and be close to home since im getting the same money"

Ok first off a couple of thoughts....

rferry what in tarnation are you talking about?

Second,

Let me physically count the teams that will offer Pudge 5 years at 50 million or more.

Zero

That's right zero.

Pudge was overpaid this past season, something I said when he first signed. Him and Boras need a dose of reality, you would think after last winter they would of realized this. Obviously they have not. If Pudge expects that kind of money, he will not be a Marlin. Thanks for the year and cya.

wasn't ivan rodriguez who said "I must break you?"

Or was that Ivan Drago? Whatever, I-Rod will probably end up somewhere with a contract much like his 2003 contract. Oh well, he should of stayed with a winner.

I already laid it out.

The Marlins need a new stadium. They, unlike recent ballpark swindles, actually need one. They need to move away from Wayne Huizenga's lease to ever make a profit. The Miami Herald and St. Petersburg Times basically lied to every one in the state of Florida that the Marlisn mgiht have gotten tax money for free. So now every politician that was considering of financing loans or speeding up our $2M a year stadium rebates won't because 80% of the state believe that means the Marlisn are getting their tax money. So, unless something magical hapens like the Herald back the Marlins or a mysterious investor makes up the difference the stadium deal is dead.

We could go 162-0 next year and it doesn't matter. We could resign Pudge in May and it wouldn't matter. The stadium deal will be dead. Mike Lowell will be gone, and not likely resigned. We'll have to wait two more years to line up local financing. Two more years of dealign with $60M payrolls and losing money at Pro Player. Then Miggy, D-Train and Beckett are eligible for arbitration, and AJ Burnett and Penny are demanding $10M from free agency. The backbone of our team is gone. And if by chance a stadium plan is actually reached, the Marlins team that enters it will be close to awful. Who knows what goes on from there. Maybe good. Maybe Milwaukee Brewers bad.

But signing Pudge Rodriguez could have atleast helped.

You got that right Ramp :thumbup

Having been through negotiations like this, I have to respect Boras and Svengali-like control he holds over his players, but at the same time, as a fan I'm saddened.

But that's part of negotiations. I can't use the language most appropriate for this discussion but let's just say the Marlins got an attitude adjustment today. In the parlance, today he "broke their hearts".

But let's think about this for a minute.

Pudge wants five years. His ego, his machismo demands it. So, how do the Marlins give him five years and survive as a franchise?

The answer is a very common one in MLB.

Option years.

Options on the last two years. $500k per or a million if the team doesn't pick up the first year open paid over two years. The deal now, if it is to be will be on Pudge's terms.

Sort of.

Three years guaranteed, $8 million a year, incentives for various thngs, all-star, division, series, rbi, home runs, games played, the list goes on and on, and if he earns all of them he conceivably would make $10,000,000 a year. No no-trade clause. They'll be lots of give and take on both sides for the next

48 hours. I'd love to be a fly on the wall.

$10,000,000 a year.

He can hold his head up when he runs into Epicure. He's the $10 million man. And if he delivers on half the incentives we'd probably elect him mayor or carry him around Star Island ala Steve Nebraska at his beck and call, so we can turn an ugly Friday afternoon into a deal everyone is

In short it's the deal he didn't take from Baltimore last year and if history is any indicator they will offer again. So the Marlins choice is to make the same offer and let the tax differential be their ace in the hole or simply walk away.

If the Marlins aren't going to negotiate with them (Pudge/Boras) I expect they will announce it almost immediately and try to get ahead of the fall-out rather than wait for the fallout. It's critically important to put the right face on this, "that it's an opportunity for both the team and Pudge to prosper, unfortunately not together, but the team loves Pudge for last year and tonight we are announcing the signing of Javy Lopez. "

I think youre overestimating the strength that article has. 80% said they were opposed to giving taxes for the stadium but the politicians have enough sense to know that the rebate isnt giving taxes. The only way they would go away from their own sensibility and decide to follow the polls is if there was a chance for voter backlash. Voter backlash won't come from the rebate return. Who will initiate it? Just because voters say one thing, that doesnt mean they will vote on it. Usually it takes a campaign to get that effect. For example, lets say 80% of voters in Florida opposed gun control. If a politician votes for gun control, those 80% don't automatically vote against him. It takes a campaign from a group like the NRA.

I'm not going to jump on the rip-Pudge-a-new-one bandwagon because whatever he's asking for now doesn't change all the good things he did. OK, so he's out of his mind now...all we have to do is say goodbye, and that's that. The Marlins got a WS ring out of him, and he got $10 million out of the Marlins.

The Marlins overpaid last year because it was the only way to get him to sign a one-year contract. And now he wants a raise?!?!? And 5 years?!?!? He's going to end up not playing for anyone next year if he sticks to those terms. And you start to wonder why a player is so insistent on so many years. I mean if his game does the talking he'll get paid. Maybe Pudge knows he's on the decline, so he wants to lock up that cash now. In any case, Pudge, you're greedy and delusional, but I wish you the best wherever you end up. I'm sure later on, when you ask yourself what your career was all about, you'll regret this decision.

Anyone want to bet that Pudge ends up playing in Japan if he sticks to these demands? No one is going to pay him that much.

Cmon people! Dont be surprised! This was an audition for Pudge to get that 5 year, $50M deal. He used us, we used him. He is a mercenary. He isnt going to get that mega deal he wants - he would have to be about 5 years younger to get something like that. If he took the 2 @ $7M per, I would think it was a good deal for us. Anything beyond that is overpaying for Fudge (his new name...). Fudge's demands are ridiculous - and I hope he doesnt take our deal and gets screwed taking less money somewhere else. Because truthfully, for baseball to be healthy, this offseason is crucial and deals like the ones Fudge demands are precisely the reason why this sport is out of control. Hopefully other teams wont fall for it...

Bye Fudge. I hope Boras makes you happy - because you are going to be playing in baseball purgatory for little money (if it were up to me...).

Oh, Rferry, as Arnold would say, "chill out!". The Marlins dont need Fudge to get a stadium deal - especially when the general consensus among fans is that Fudge is a fudgin greedy icehole.

Probably the same paper that knowingly asked the wrong question to defeat the deal.

omg that's a great idea.

Admin, if pudge doesn't sign, please please please add another filter here

Probably the same paper that knowingly asked the wrong question to defeat the deal. Miami Herald is no political lobbying powerhouse that has a major intent to kill an element of a ballpark deal. The cruise ship industry effectivley killed Henry's first option of a cruise tax because it seriously affected them. The Herald has no intent or motive. Yeah the article had a bad headline, and the poll was conducted badly, but don't worry. Its not 2-1 odds.

Having gone back and read what was posted since I started to write my above posted comments, I happen to agree with Rferry, while not to the extent but totally to the thought. The Herald will use this and their poll to kill the stadium with all means at their disposal, editorially, politically, in the daylight and in the dark of night. Those who do not want ths stadium built have an opportunity to its chance serious harm. And they will. And Pudge and Boras know it and are using it against the Fish.

I believe the Herald will bash Pudge instead of the Marlins. This may be a PR boon for the Marlins. ESPNews had Stark I believe on saying that Pudge could have made the Marlins offer work with extensions and incentives but didn't want to.

someone said the O's offer was $14 mil, remember those wonderful Maryland State Income Taxes.

weren't they offering him 3 years-$21M in january?
