May 23, 201412 yr Author reported attendance of 25,507. what a bunch of phooey Believe it or not, the homerun porch, the bullpen reserve in RF, three Lexus levels on rf, and the LF lower deck were all full- camp day or something. No seats available in them, I tried to buy the subway 5 buck seats to enjoy a day out at the park. I can see 25k sold or given away, and 18-20k that were there. A lot of groups left in the fourth though.
May 24, 201412 yr Just to fill in anyone's curiosity, that game was a field trip day for schools. I'm a teacher and the Marlins sent out a packet announcing it as Weather Day to tie it into the science curriculum. Schools were invited to arrive early, like 11 am or so and then receive a presentation about weather and stuff, followed by enjoying the game itself. The problem with that stuff and why my school didn't bother, the kids don't really wanna see a presentation about weather, they'll go for the game, yet with the fact that schools get out anywhere from 2:30-3:40... Coupled with travel times and just having to be back at school at areasonable time, the time allowed for the actual game is about an hour, a few innings, and the kids won't even get the chance to enjoy the best parts of a ballgame, or even see the end and know who won or how it finished or whatever. It's a tease and defeats the purpose of going to a game, in my eyes, and that's coming from a big time baseball fan. My principal actually consulted me about this. If anything, the trip would be good maybe for high school students who have parents permission to stay for the entire game... But for me at an elementary school it's not a reasonable field trip. So that's why the attendance was high Thursday, and yes those are paid tickets albeit discounted. And that's why so many groups leave early.
May 24, 201412 yr Weather day? Those days ended 3 years ago with the retractable roof -- "weather" at Marlins Park is obsolete. The whole concept is really, really dumb, probably nothing but a pure inertia holdover from the old days in the football stadium. If they want to tie it into a curriculum, better to make it "engineering day" or "architecture day" and talk about the roof. About how it weighs 15 million pounds and opens and closes in minutes at the will of mere humans. How no ball has yet hit a roof component (AFAIK) due to good design. How the 15 million pounds of roof segments are all computer controlled and run with a simple joy-stick. Bring the guys in who designed the roof in to tell them how they got inspired to be engineers or architects. Better yet to figure out how to let the kids actually see an entire game. An hour of baseball? Ridiculous. I'm not a teacher, but I would have passed on that deal, too.
