Marlins still might Resign Looper

Featured Replies

The Marlins haven't ruled out re-signing Braden Looper is he's willing to avoid arbitration. The speculation is that the Marlins are the favorites to sign Armando Benitez, but if that doesn't work out, they could try to ink Looper to a one-year, $3 million contract. They're also interested in Antonio Alfonseca and Mike Williams, though they'd probably only be setup men.

A bullpen of Benetiz, Fox, Looper, Bump, Tejera, Almanza wouldnt be bad. Just those last 2 scare me. But I dont know if its possible to sign Loop and Benetiz but I'd like to have Looper back Ive always liked him, even though I may be a minority in this.

Yea. But The Marlins are also Interested in Alfonseca and Mike Williams. They could sign all 3...

as long as they are reasonable contracts, i wouldn't be against it. they have all shown sparks of talent and I think can be turned around by our staff.

hmm, I hope Looper accepts a contract and doesn't force the Marlins to not tender him.

Looper > (by a lot) Alfonseca/Williams

Antonio Alfonseca and Mike Williams

uh-oh...

Why aren't the Marlins interested in Al Levine or Al Reyes instead, they are clearly superior and cheaper pitchers than Alfonseca and Williams.

Levine: 71.0 IP 2.79 ERA (has been good since 1999, had a bad 2002)

Reyes: 17.0 IP 3.18 ERA (has been good since 2001)

Hammond ;) :You already know, and the Yanks are stupid and are aching to trade him.

compared to...

Williams: 63.0 IP 6.14 ERA (has been good from 2000-2002, had a good 95 and 98 seasons.)

Alfonseca: 66.1 IP 5.83 ERA (former Marlin, has been just decent throughout his career)

Now looper is pretty good, but for 3 million, you guys could get levine and reyes or Levine and Hammond depending on how much the Yanks pay down.

I would rather us explore other options at this point. Rocky Biddle and Dennys Baez, I believe, are both available. Could be solid additions at around 1-2M a piece.

I like Levine, Soriano. He is 35 though...What is his going rate?

We need a lefty somehow....

I don't think 3 mil in Looper is a sound investment.

Alfonseca and Williams? What, are we trying to get as many relievers with an ERA around 6 as we can? Why not sign Vladimir Nunez while we're at it?

I like that idea Ross. We should resign Nunez, he was a very good asset to the Pen in 2001. He struggled last year mightly but i know he has put his things together. I used to like him alot....

If Loop can get his act together and work on other pitches, it wont be a bad idea to Re Sign him.

I may be in the minority here but if we were to only sign one reliever, and the choice was benitez or looper, i'd take looper.

If by Talent, you mean Blow then yes Benitez and Williams have shown talent.

Both men can't be depended on when it comes to Closing games or even setting up games.

Williams had an above average pitching coach in Phillie and nothing really happened.

Benitez had talent pitching coaches behind him and nothing happened.

Sure Looper is a heart attack waiting to happen but I don't know how gaining one of those two and losing Looper could ever be a good move.

I wouldnt take loop over Benitez.

Benitez has been a closer all this career and knows what closing is all about. He just struggled last year, but what about the past seasons? This guy was un-hittable.

If you get Loop at 3 and Benitez at 1.5, you have to take Benitez.

He was blowing games a year ago as well.

AJ, What does his stats from a few years ago have anything to with what he's still capable of doing?

Where can you show me that he is not going downhill? Benitez has hit a wall just like all players do and outside of a few odd cases(Javy Lopez) it's almost certain his best days are way behind him.

Alfoneseca & Williams are over the hill waste of money talent. I seem to remember Alfonseca giving up a big hit to the Marlins in the Chicago series and Mitch Williams hasn't done anything since a few good years with Philly. Send them some condolence flowers and use the rest of the money to Vlad or Javy.

Williams and Alfonseca still have great stuff, and could prosper in PPS and in Miami for the same reasons as Benitez. If they are of reasonable cost ($500-700,000), just like with Armando, the reward outweighs the risk.

Benitez is very hard to hit. He needs to work on certain things, i know he was done very poorly but he can get his things straighten out.

He just needs some work, thats all. He is way to wild.

He's 31 and has pitched in THe Majors for 10 years(I believe), it's not like he has time.

For a guy who doesn't have the best pitching arsenal, their is no reason to believe IMO that this is just a case of a guy just needing some work. I don't see how three million is something you risk on a team that wants a payroll under 60 million.
