April 17, 20179 yr I meant this year when he obviously has not had it Should Mattingly ask that Phelps be traded because of a rough start to the season?
April 17, 20179 yr And that's what we're doing. I was just a little perplexed by you pointing out that a clear opinion was clearly an opinion. You said it very factually. You said Tazawa is just bad.
April 17, 20179 yr How could that possibly be a fact? Should I say "in my opinion" before everything I post on this forum from now on? I didn't say what you said was a fact. It was clearly an opinion. But you stated it in a factual manner and that got me to respond because I disagreed with it. I don't see what else there is to discuss here. You're making this a bigger deal than it needs to be.
April 17, 20179 yr How is it possible to state something that couldn't possibly be a fact in a factual manner? And you keep bringing it up. I'd much rather talk about the bullpen. We both keep bringing it up, we're responding to each other. But to answer your question... the term "is" on it's own implies something as factual. Ozuna just won player of the week but if I say "AJ Ellis is the NL Player of the Week" the statement is wrong because I used the term "is" and when phrased that way it isn't stated in the form of an opinion. I'd rather talk about the bullpen too but you keep asking me questions about this.
April 17, 20179 yr "AJ Ellis is the NL Player of the Week" isn't a fact or an opinion. It's an opinion. If I feel like Ellis deserves player of the week, I can state "AJ Ellis is the NL Player of the Week" regardless of what MLB decided upon.
April 17, 20179 yr That's not how opinions work. It works the same way as you saying "Tazawa is bad." Both phrases imply something is one thing when it could be false. I'm done man, this is silly. Thanks.
April 17, 20179 yr Phelps I think will be ok. Although I think I have noticed his velocity is down. I'm hoping he isn't injured. Tazawa didn't have a good year last year and right now he needs to be put in less crucial situations to see if he can improve. Right now I trust McGowan over Tazawa.
April 18, 20179 yr Should Mattingly ask that Phelps be traded because of a rough start to the season? Not what I am saying at all. This season it has been obvious since late spring that Phelps is off yet Mattingly keeps going to him. I even said in the game thread that going to him in the 9th would be a mistake yet Don put him in and Phelps blew the lead

April 22, 20179 yr Yes, it was incredibly silly for saying that "Tazawa is bad" is presented as a fact. "Bad" is normative. Therefore, it couldn't be presented as a fact. Ever. Under any circumstances. By the way, it is your opinion that "this is silly." True, but "Tazawa is bad" can be presented as fact if "bad" is defined statistically (i.e. below a certain percentile of relievers' ERA, Opp. Avg., WAR, etc.). Simply put, players can be proven "bad" as soon as "bad" is defined statistically. It's why statistics is loved by modern researchers. It makes it easy. Most casual fans do not go thru the steps of the scientific method necessary to "prove" a player is "bad", but in any case... "Yelich is good" and "Giancarlo can hit the baseball very hard" will be considered fact by me even without a full statistical scientific method proving so... Because as soon as words like "good" and "very hard" are defined statistically (i.e. looking at Giancarlo's exit velocity and average homerun distance), normative words will have a place in vocabulary when judging a player quantitatively. It is just most of us do not go thru the steps in between required to do so... Either out of laziness or because "common sense" tells us it not necessary to do so. Regardless, you are right. As a statement of fact, actually, as well.
