David Phelps and Junichi Tazawa

Featured Replies

Nice first couple of weeks, but if Mattingly reads this board...let's only use these two guys in low-leverage situations for a little while.

Barraclough-7th

Ziegler-8th

Ramos-9th

Those three are throwing pretty well so let's stick with those three for now. Also, leave Jarlin Garcia on the team.

Don't understand why Mattingly is so high on Phelps

Because he did well last year. Hopefully he gets back to that form, but it's not working out right now.

The K/BB rate is still strong for Phelps, but it seems like all contact against him is hit hard at this point. He needs some lower leverage outings.

He started out well. But things got dicey when we fell behind to hitters. Mets had the lefties lined up. Zeigler has been incredible.

Maybe because he struck out 114 guys with a 2.28 ERA and 2.80 FIP in 86.2 innings last year?

Yeah. It's April 16th. Plenty of time for him to bounce back.

Phelps was obviously great last season but this season he is relying on his cutter way too much, not using his change up, and not getting ahead with his mid-90s fastball and then using his cutter to throw guys off.

Tazawa's fastball is flat as a fucking plate and his location is terrible. I'm not sure what they saw in him. His career numbers are pretty mediocre with more hits than innings pitched and has a tendency to give up home runs. His only real positive statistic is his strikeout numbers.

I meant this year when he obviously has not had it

Phelps doesn't deserve to get shit on just yet.  I don't have any issues with moving him back into the 6th/7th inning type role he was originally intended until he gets his act together again.  He was freaking amazing last year and was pretty good the year before for us too so he's had a nice track record here and deserves a few more opportunities before we all bust out the torches and pitchforks.  Tazawa is a trash fire.

Yeah, I'm actually not sure at all why Phelps has become a 1 inning setup guy. The plan was to extend him a bit, I believe. I say use him in the middle innings.

Marlins signed Tazawa to a 2 year/$12 mil deal.... Just gonna have to live with him and hope he settles in.

And then one of the 3 tail off and then everyone says bring Tazawa/Phelps.

Just the ebb and flow, way too early in the season to write off Tazawa.

I do agree about Phelps to the part of him not being a late inning guy, just stick him as the innings eater/spot starter.

I agree with this. It's good to have depth because everyone goes through struggles over the course of a season.

Still more concerned with the rotation.

Tazahawa is a bigger concern for me then Phelps. Tazahawa ERA is over 4.1 with the Red Sox last 2 years. Definitely can see him having a 4.5-4.75 year after a contract, which is not acceptable in the majors for a player making his contract. Phelps needs to lock in. Just had a bad start. He could pull off a string of +++ outings. His body language is not helping tho.

Phelps has proven his quality is much greater as a short reliever.

Phelps is in a slump.  Tazawa is just bad.

This is completely an opinion. The definitions of bad and in a slump can be completely subjective. Tazawa has had enough major league success that one can assume he's also in a slump. Maybe he's "bad" right now because he's in a slump?

You'll have to forgive me.  I thought the point of forums was to share opinions.  Also, in my opinion, Tazawa's been trending downward for a couple years now.

I never said you couldn't share your opinion. The next point of forums is to debate each other's opinions. We disagree on something, we debate it. It's awesome. Keep sharing your opinions.

Because we're failed to landing one super closer,so we're welcome all the big name relief pitchers that willing to come here.

Dead accurate.  Phelps is in a slump.  Tazawa is just bad.  Ziegler, Barraclough, and Ramos are the only trustworthy relievers available right now.

McGowan,Urena and Garcia not bad,too.

Phelps and Taza de Agua have not performed as expected, so far. However, they have shown in the past that they can be effective bullpen arms. IMO, they are in the middle of a stretch where they have not lived up to expectations but I am hopeful they will be able to prove they are quality arms and consistently help the Marlins win.

Because the entire 2016 season lol
