Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez: Non-tendered

Featured Replies

I think the AJ question makes El Duque more attractive to the Marlins. His age would scare away most teams, but if we get him cheap enough, we only need him for a couple months. After that, we can put him into the pen for mid-relief, reduce the wear and tear on him arm, and make our pen stronger.

Good idea......Can he bring Livan here as well???? ;)

If he comes cheap, the Marlins would like to make Orlando Hernandez their fifth starter. The Giants, Orioles and Rangers are among the other teams that figure to have interest in El Duque, who was non-tendered yesterday.

I know that Livan dream is to play for the marlins with his brother. So it is possible El Duque could take a paycut to play down here.

He's 38, is bitten by the injury bug, and came of a season on the DL. Definitely a gamble and not the greatest of pitchers to begin with- besides the postseason.

El Duque isn't 38!?!

I would like to see El Duque Play here. Perfect for our #5 starter while AJ is out. He can then go to the Pen also, and help us there.

baseballreference.com seems to trust the real cuban documents, I do too. We all know he was lying about his age to begin with, him being 38 just makes sense too.

He's 38, I'd bet my life on it, well, if I won a lot in return, yeah, I would bet my life on it.

In black and white, it's not a lie.

People, let me just say that I saw Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez pitch for the first time when I was 8 or 9 years old. The guy started at the age of 18 or 19 in Cuban baseball. I am 28 right now, so you do the math... 38 would seem a pretty good bet. I also saw Livan's debut in Cuba and he didn't last 4 innings, my old hometown team pulverized him in the fifth so bad... Going back to the topic, it would be a good thing if we can sign him cheap and then use him as our long reliever. The guy is old but he knows a world about pitching and that always helps. However, I would also love to have Redman back... :p

My pitching coach was el duque's trainer back in cuba, and they are still very good friends,im'a ask him what el duque thinks bout coming to the marlins.(i'll ask him one of these days, gotta wait, lol).

When El Duque is able to stay healthy he's as good as any pitcher in baseball, his problem is that he usually can't keep healthy for more than 3 games at a time. He's close to 40 and he's arm was greatly abused in Cuba. I remembered him pitching the 7th game of the 1994 cuban championship serios on 2 days rest.

I think at this point in his carreer he can become a closer and be a domminant one for a few years.

I'd rather see Nate Bump or Justin Wayne (if he can EVER do it) cover the # 5 spot until AJ is able.

Use the $1MM or so to be spent on a # 5 starter for a SCott Sauerbeck...a nice lefty for the pen. Overtime, we will have the # 5 starter in AJ or one of the minor leaguers. So let's not waste it on a one-year filler....let's make the pen as solid as can be.

i believe the rumors concerning el duque's age... i've seen tons of references to it online. here are a couple.

from baseball library: http://www.baseballlibrary.com/baseballlib...dez_Orlando.stm

Mystery has surrounded Hernandez since he joined the Yankees, from the exact details of his escape from Cuba to his seemingly mutable facility with the English language. The most persistent mystery though, remains his actual age. Since leaving Cuba, Hernandez has maintained that he was born on October 11, 1969, which would have made him 31 at the start of the 2001 season. Court records in Havana, however, indicate otherwise. According to documents relating to his divorce from his ex-wife Norma, Hernandez was born in 1965, meaning he might be as much as four years older than he told the Yankees.

from USATODAY last year:

Orlando Hernandez, RHP

Opening Day Age: 32 (officially, at least. We think he's closer to 36.)

if you look at his declining durability and injury problems, i don't find it hard to believe that he really is a 38-year-old. he missed all of last season with shoulder trouble, and i have serious questions about how effective he could be in 2004.

I would have to agree with you. He's very deceptive, and without the wear and tear, would make a fine closer. He will probably cost a couple million though.

And sadly, you have benitez... :lol
