Kane County's Bill Murphy Tosses Second No-Hitter of the Day

June 10, 2003

Athletics farmhand Bill Murphy tossed the minor leagues' second no-hitter of the day Tuesday, as the Kane County Cougars topped the West Michigan Whitecaps 5-0. Murphy retired the first 25 batters he faced on the night, losing his bid for a perfect game in the ninth inning by allowing a one-out walk to Chris Maples. He rebounded to strike out the next two batters to become the second player in franchise history to toss a nine-inning no-hitter. It was the first no-hitter in the Midwest League since Wisconsin's Derrick Van Dusen's in August 2001.

Murphy was helped by a couple of stellar defensive plays, as shortstop John McCurdy robbed Brent Cleven of a hit with a diving stop, while third baseman Jason Basil made a barehand play to steal another apparent hit.

Murphy has won his last three starts, allowing only one run in 25 1/3 innings, as he's improved to 6-4, 2.12. He leads the Midwest League with 81 strikeouts.

A 6-foot-1 lefty known for his bulldog approach, Murphy entered the season ranked as the No. 26 prospect in the Oakland system. His fastball sits in the 88-91 mph range with excellent movement, and he has a plus curve. Drafted in the third round of last year's draft out of Cal State Northridge, Murphy struggled with a tired arm in his pro debut last season, going 1-4, 4.57 for Vancouver in the Northwest League

This Mark Redman trade was set up by the Juan Encarnacion trae. It showed all of baseball that the Marlins werent going to sit around and non-tender players. Even if we didnt get that much in the Enc trade, it set up this trade with the Athhletics pondering "We want this guy but the Marlins are definitaly going to trade him even if its not equal in worth. We got to trade for this guy". Beinfest your awesome. Keep up the good work!

Texas league is a notorious hitters league, so his record looks promising...k's went down a lot though

so Beinfest got Neu, a lefty 22 yr old improving evry yr and a moderate amount of cash??

No cash. Admin don't question him...remember that's Beinfest's kid or is Steinbrenner's kid. Are you looking for daddy???

Anyways nice move on Beinfest part, this is a kid who was rated as one of the better lefties in the Midwest League(while in Kane County). If you want someone to compare him with.... Ryan Snare former Marlin farmhand.
