May 24, 20224 yr I work for a very large company in the Fortune 15. Once a quarter our CEO comes on and has a company-wide meeting where people can submit questions to ask. The previous two quarters people have asked what they're doing to help out with inflation since they literally give a 1-2% raise at max each year (no bonus) and that's if you get a top score on the 1-5 grading scale. This obviously doesn't even keep up with inflation in a normal year let alone what we've seen since the pandemic. Today someone asked again that per the quarter 3 meeting from last year, it's now been another 6 months and inflation is showing no signs of stopping anytime soon nor is it forecasted to do so and it's getting harder and harder to keep working here. This CEO had the gall to actually tell us "we want to be careful because we don't want to start having wage inflation and pay you too much for doing the same job". Now mind you, this is a person who makes roughly 900x what the average employee of this company makes. The only wage inflation we've actually seen over the last 4-5 decades has been at the uppermost sr. executive levels which is why the average family needs multiple incomes now to support itself. It's just pure greed. After this answer his WASP-y secretary chimed in (she was the one who fielded the submitted questions) and said "And thank you for telling us that. I think we can all agree that most of us don't work here for the paycheck we just work here because we want to make a difference!". GTFO KAREN Anyway, it's been a fucking really shitty week overall and this was just the cherry on top.
May 24, 20224 yr Author 8 minutes ago, rmc523 said: Lol WTF kind of line is that from the secretary yeah then the "last question" someone supposedly submitted had some fluff line that started off with "and i just want to thank you for coming on here once every quarter to remind us all how important our job is and that we make a difference every day! Could you please tell us some good books you've read lately?" we used to have an open forum to verbally ask questions but last Q3 this lady got on there and called them greedy corporate pigs and wanted to know why they were so cheap with handing out raises - it's been electronic submission only since then ha

It's just a pile of shit all around and it's why capitalism is eating itself right now - too much blind greed. Placed my weekly call to my elderly father as usual on Sunday and he was complaining that there are all these jobs available but nobody is working them. I can see both sides really - as someone who has worked full-time for their entire adult life it pisses me off when people bitch about having no money but don't ever seem to have a job either. Yet, I can also understand not wanting to sell your soul to barely scrape by either because companies are fucking assholes and love treating their people like shit while trying to polish a turd like our CEO did in that meeting today. It's ridiculous.

There are so many jobs available for two reasons: 1. a lot of them are skilled jobs that they dont have the talent pool for 2. a lot of jobs dont pay wages to attract people to said job Thats the short and to the point reason for so many jobs available. Pay more for x job and it will get filled. Its called simple economics. And well to point 1, well we do a shitty job of actually training people in this country for most jobs so whatever.

It's not quite the same as Sinclair's 'The Jungle' as thank God we have more rights as workers now than they did back in those times but we're starting to edge closer to that precipice where some shit gonna go down with workers and employers again. Employers need to start making some changes for their employees benefit again. With all the advancements in communication and technology it's pretty well proven at this juncture that the whole 40 hour work week is an antiquated model that doesn't serve much purpose except from burning the employee out. 32 hours is more than sufficient in the vast majority of roles to get the same amount of work done. Also when you have an annual "raise" of 1-2% max you aren't even keeping up with inflation on a normal year either let alone keeping up with inflation AND allowing people to contribute to their 401k (y'know since 95% of employers don't offer pension plans anymore either - save for their top executives golden parachutes). There's some pretty gnarly wage inversion going on right now, which is paying new hires far more than the tenured folks who have been proven to be able to do the job just so they can fill the roles that get vacated by people leaving those roles because they TREATED THEM LIKE SHIT IN THE FIRST PLACE! So in a nutshell, they tell you they can't afford to pay you more after doing your job for ten years but they'll hire someone off the street who is unproven making what you already make, where you then have to train them - then YOU leave and they have to fill your spot with ANOTHER unproven person making more than what you made. Yet somehow they feel as if it was cheaper to just do this instead of boosting your pay up a bit? I guess a lot of it just goes back to banking on the incredible annoyance of finding a new job once you've been institutionalized in your current role. They prey on that to keep their costs down as they can get the skilled labor without having to really add any costs by paying you more.
May 27, 20224 yr I'm an "executive" where i work and we all had a meeting among the higher ups to discuss how to retain people. I suggested raising salaries because Miami is getting hit harder than most with rent raises. The answer i got: "No one has said they left for money in exit interviews. And inflation is everywhere" I mean you wanted a way to retain people. I'm giving you the fucking answer. And also we've had many people transfer from high cost of living places and they keep their inflated ass salaries. They're also the shittiest employees. A lot of our staff are very unhappy at that fact. I'm waiting for our raises come in, and if that isn't corrected then I guarantee you we'll have more people leaving. So yeah. Like your boss, mine loves to hear your thoughts as long as it has nothing to do with paying you more Edited May 27, 20224 yr by Entendu

Like your boss, mine loves to hear your thoughts as long as it has nothing to do with paying you more We use to have a program up until this year that allowed certain people to nominate you for random bonuses. Nothing very big and they were all taxed but at least it was SOME extra money throughout the year. My wife (yeah, we both work for the same company) was fortunate to work in an area that gave her a lot of face time with higher up people from all parts of the vast corporation so she'd help out with all sorts of things and would do fairly well throughout the year with the bonuses coming in (usually only $100 at a time but there were 250, 500, and 1000 available too if you got approval). Supposedly this program was ended because of "overwhelming feedback" that we only wanted to be recognized "socially" instead of financially. So what was once a cash reward turned into a literal "atta boy!" and a virtual pat on the back. NOT kidding. Most adults work at their job for the paycheck. We aren't there to change the world. Companies that tell themselves otherwise are just ignorant. Sure, there's always that one person who posts up those lame ass fake paper certificates in their cube wall for completing some upskill training course but 95% of the people out there work at an employer because they need the paycheck. We just want money and to be respected and not treated like a child or a piece of shit (or both).

One of the jobs my company is working on involves the federal rent relief program. Trust me when I tell you this, there are TONS of people getting by on these programs. People who lost their job during COVID and have been crying poverty ever since and receiving these funds to subsist. I must have looked at over 200 applications myself and maybe 10 had an actual need. The rest just decided they didn't want another job. And the government isn't evaluating the excuses. The directive is to just pay. And they can reapply as many times as they would like. And then we wonder why there's rampant inflation. And the excuses are ridiculous. Sometimes they use the excuses to avoid providing information. One guy refused to give us any income support because he didn't have a computer at home, but had diabetes and was afraid to go out and use public computers. Mind you, he was using a computer to submit his application. AND THIS EXCUSE WAS ACCEPTED. We took him at his word and he got paid with minimal support. No income support at all. I say 200 because that's all I saw myself, everyone I've spoken to have seen the same thing. We've looked at over 30k. And this is just for one state. We're also one of many contractors. It's bonkers out there. I believe the backlog is about 100k in this state, with an average disbursement per app of about USD 10K.... Edited May 28, 20224 yr by Entendu

I don't see this as the reason there's inflation though - before your head explodes i'm not saying i disagree with you that people just want their "free" money instead of going back to work though either. I just don't really see them as linked since a lot of the people did have jobs before and now just don't want to go back to working and would prefer the easy way out - but then again how many of these people realize that that after working for someone like the companies i've worked for in my life that it's just not worth being shitted on over and over by the corporate pigs at the tippy top who think you should lick their bootheels for giving you a 1% raise when inflation is killing so many of us in the wallet. Here's the thing, if you add up ALL of the "free" money for the tens of thousands or even millions of people across the U.S. who've revceived it is still doesn't even come close to the combined salaries of the top 10 individual CEOs of the Fortune 10 companies. Now sit there and think about that. 10 people who have the power to make the lives of millions of other people that much better in working for a living and they tell us "sorry, we can't give you a pay raise because of wage inflation". So yeah, it disgusts me every time i go to work. Every. Single. Time. So for some of those folks who do want the free money - i don't blame them necessarily because I kinda get it. Life is so damn short as it is and frankly, it sucks, to have to spend half of your waking hours doing something you don't feel appreciated at just so you can make ends meet and keep a roof over your head. We want the free money too but and I think it makes a lot of us upset (myself included) that those people have found a way to live on those meager funds and not have to put up with shithole bosses demeaning you every chance they get. And again, ALL of the untold thousands who have received that money doesn't add up to just a small handful of people. Those are the real fucking villians. Always follow the money! Always.

The issue is that people produced for that money, meaning the supply of goods and services was higher. When you hand people money to stay home you've got the issue that supply of whatever they create is down.. In simplest terms, you've kept demand at the same level by protecting income but lowered supply. That increases prices. Then there's a million other things they did that screwed up the economy, like the student loan fiasco, the eviction moratoriums, etc.
