November 7, 20223 yr Looking to get the wife a nice telescope this Christmas since we have access to a lot dark skies out here on the outskirts of Phoenix. Was curious if any of you are into star gazing and might have some advice on a telescope.
November 7, 20223 yr How much/what are you trying to see? And in what detail? I have a telescope at home that gets some pretty good views of the moon, and I can see the rings on Saturn, and can see the little dots of moons around Jupiter, but really don't get much detail beyond the rings for anything except the moon. I've had this thing for years now, and I'd imagine current versions could take pictures of what they're seeing. I don't know if being in darker skies would allow me to see more detail than here? I enjoy it, but would also love being able to see more detail of further away planets. It's a Meade telescope, but I'd have to get back to you on the model of it.

I was looking at spending around $1000 on it. I was looking at Celestron Nexstar 6SE which seems to be able to take pics of some deep space objects with an attached DSLR camera. I also like that it can also automatically move to where various objects can be seen.

Yeah, mine supposedly moves itself to objects and is supposed to be able to "lock" on objects (i.e. use its own motors to account for earth rotation, etc), but I've never been able to get that feature to work right. I think the one I have was cheaper than that (my parents got it for me many years ago), so I'd imagine you'll be able to get some features that mine doesn't have (nor were available at the time).

Hey, she's married. She obviously wants one within your families budget lol! J/K. TBH, there has to be some available on offerup or mercari. Maybe check for a used one as a surprise on a tuesday, and something else for her birthday? Its a great thought but its not something very practical or useful. Whatever you do, don't buy her a vacuum cleaner.
