June 8, 20233 yr Since Eury is on an innings limit this year, why not just make him a high leverage reliever for the rest of the season? Someone who can come into a game per week and close a game out for us with a lead, going 3 or 4 innings. That has value. A lot of very good starting pitchers started out as relievers their first season (Price, Wainwright, etc.)

And then let him know the plan to have him be a reliever. They could also have him pitch every 3rd or 4th day still so there's some routine. Wouldn't be the greatest idea of course. Heh. But 120 innings, "shut down" then limit to ... let's say 30 bullpen innings? Then move it up next year. Six man rotation will help push this schedule back a bit, too.

June 11, 20233 yr Author non-throwing shoulder is good news, much better than potential TJ. Like the idea of Eury as a super reliever. Think it would be good for his development if it came down to that.

June 11, 20233 yr As for the title, I actually do believe that we have a starting pitching problem, more so than catcher or other positions. Eury has an innings limit, and I’m guessing Cabrera and even Luzardo are guys they want to be careful with. Rogers isn’t fully healthy right now, and the veteran (Cueto) we signed to alleviate this problem is both injured and, imo, washed up. If we’re still in contention by the trade deadline (which, honestly, I think we will be), what we could use is a veteran starter (or two). Doesn’t have to be a big trade, but a couple of guys who could provide quality starts late into the season. Our bullpen seems fine, I don’t think we have the worst catching situation (if they just let Fortes start the majority of games), and our outfield seems fine with De La Cruz and Sanchez emerging. Hopefully Jazz comes back soon, we need him more than the other thread seems to indicate. Davis isn’t good and has no business starting every day. We could also use some help at either SS or 3B, I think. Not sure this needs to be a tremendous hitter, but someone to improve the offense. Maybe Das can help us out as the Cardinals have a surplus of hitters. Someone like Brendan Donovan would give us another hitter who puts the ball in play and a guy good at getting on base. Jean Segura probably shouldn’t be playing every day. I wouldn’t mind a Donovan/Segura platoon at 3B (think Jean is still fine against LHP/as a versatile guy off the bench). Garrett Cooper kind of makes no sense on the team, not sure what to do with him. Avisail makes no sense either, but I’m guessing it’s easier to trade Cooper even though light hitting DH’s don’t have awesome trade value. Edited June 11, 20233 yr by Erick
