Marlins name Taylor to coaching staff

MIAMI -- The Florida Marlins today named Tony Taylor to their 2004 Major League coaching staff. Taylor will serve as Florida's bullpen coach, as Jeff Cox moves from bullpen coach to third base coach. Senior Vice President and General Manager Admin Beinfest made the announcement.

Taylor, 67, rejoins the Marlins for his 10th season and fourth at the Major League level. Taylor joined Florida's staff as the Club's infield coach in 1999, a position he held for three seasons. He also served 14 games as Florida's bench coach during the 1999 and 2000 seasons.

Taylor began his coaching career with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1977 and served as the team's first base coach from 1977-79 before moving into player development in 1980 as the Phillies infield and hitting instructor. From 1982 to 1987, Taylor managed in the Philadelphia minor league system compiling a 255-370 record (.408) before returning to the Majors as the Phillies first base coach in 1988 and 1989.

Taylor joined the San Francisco Giants organization in 1990 and spent three seasons as a hitting and infield instructor at the AA and AAA levels before joining the Marlins.

Taylor has spent the last two years in South Florida mentoring young athletes in hitting, fielding and the basics of baseball.

Taylor hit .261 over a 19-year Major League career (1958-1976) with the Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and Detroit Tigers. He posted 2,007 hits, scored 1,005 runs, stole 234 bases, hit 75 home runs and drove in 598 runs in 2,195 games. He played 1,498 games at second base, 417 at third, 89 at first, eight at shortstop and 19 in the outfield. Taylor was originally drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 1957 and was named to the National League All-Star team in 1960.
