Catcher 22

We’re putting one of the worst if not the worst defensive catchers out there on a daily bases. I understand he’s the key piece from the jazz trade and Bendix ball means creating as much value as possible for players. But he’s also costing the team runs. So when do they give up on Augustin at C?

It’s not like we have any alternatives. Just Joe Mack:

  • Age 23

  • #56 prospect on Fangraphs

  • Considered an excellent defender

  • .388 wOBA (xwOBA: .376) at AAA after two straight seasons above .360

  • Career low K% so far this year, 18.8%

  • Best BB% since age 18, an elite 20%

So I can understand why they stick with Gus.

Helps the team from being more competitive which would mean there would be more pressure on Bruce to spend to push them over the edge.

In other words, he'll retire with the Marlins as our C1

Gus being average or slightly below average at Catcher makes him far more valuable of course. If he can’t play catcher it really makes the jazz trade look like a huge bust unless Gus somehow hits 30HR+ some year as a DH. I get why they’re trying to force the issue with him but annoying when there’s a clear and better alternative to help this season

Dude is a straight liability to the game. Costs us at least 1 run per game. Makes it worse when he's not hitting well. A menace to my heart on the basepaths. I find myself praying he just catches the ball in critical situations. If Bendix is smart then by May I think he puts a wrap on the idea of him catching but neither him nor Bruce care that much to compete so they will let it go longer, much longer.

Curious your thoughts how long they should keep Gus at C?

Somebody should steal his catchers mitt and never give it back. I was urging them all winter to give him reos at first. He should have spent the entire off-season practicing first base. He could be a poor mans pujols there.

Every time he is in the lineup at catcher, we basically start a run down. That is not acceptable nor will it change.
