SAN DIEGO (Ticker) - The San Diego Padres are in position to deal.

San Diego signed versatile outfielder Jay Payton to a two-year contract on Tuesday, adding another veteran bat to their already imposing lineup.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Payton earned $1.85 million with the Colorado Rockies in 2003.

The 31-year-old Payton hit .302 with 32 doubles, 28 homers and 89 RBI in 157 games for the Rockies. The six-year veteran, who spent his first five seasons with the New York Mets, is a career .291 hitter with 69 homers and 245 RBI in 572 games.

Amid rumors that the team is contemplating a trade for Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Jason Kendall, San Diego has positioned itself for a number of potential deals. The lineup features several players who can play infield or outfield (Ryan Klesko and Phil Nevin), a number of talented younger players (Sean Burroughs, Khalil Greene and Xavier Nady) and versatile veterans in Mark Loretta and Jeff Cirillo.

To make room for Payton on the 40-man roster, San Diego designated lefthander Mike Bynum for assignment.

Bynum, 25, was 1-4 with an 8.74 ERA in 13 games for the Padres last season. The 49th overall pick in the 1999 draft, he is 2-4 with a 7.25 ERA in 25 lifetime appearances for the Padres.

Damn, Payton would've been the veteran bat I would've wanted for the Marlins

although I'm sure his numbers he put up at Coors are decieving to what he would put up at the Pro.

Good Luck to Him with the Pad's

Darn it, i wanted the Marlins to take him. He would have been a good fit down here, and his price tag wasn't high.

In fact, it was perfect for us.. and less then what he should of gottan.

Jay Payton has hit .264 with 34 HR and 109 RBI in over 1000 at bats in the last 3 years when not in Coors Field.

Hardly worth 5.5 over 2 years.

Rotoworlds saying the financial terms are 2 years 5.5 mill. with an option for a 3rd.

:wow cheap For a good player.

That obviously does not fit the description of Payton.

Payton's Splits

Spit====AB====AVG====OBP====SLG====OPS

Home==298====322=====377=====540=====917

Away==302====281=====330=====483=====813

Total==600====302======354====512=====866

and 813 Aways OPS is nice. if he should do that next year if he stays healthy. and for a CF, an 813 OPS is worth that money.

I dont think paytons starting, the lineup is already full...

he's gonna start i would think
