Marlins Close to Signing Darren Oliver

Featured Replies

According to ESPN Insider Rumor Central the Marlins are close to signing Darren Oliver to a one year contract for a little less than 1 mil. Only obstacle in the way according to ESPN is the physical.

This is being reported by Jayson Stark

wow... i like this signing if it happens. I think he won like 13 games last year playing for the Rockies. Plus he is a lefty.

hes an innings guy but doesnt provide much...

Yeah I think most agree hes an innings eater.

In 32 starts he posted a 5.04era 1.45whip and went 13-11 along with 180 innings pitched.

Not a bad signee but nothing great. I think there are still better people out there than him though.

what i want to know is if this is a major league deal or a minor league with an invite to ST?

His numbers will be better being that it is much different going from Mile High to PPS.

True. You can probably shave at least half a point off his ERA by just getting him out of Coors. Anybody have road numbers? ahh hell, I'll find em.

Ehh, not too thrilled. I'd prefer something else.

I did hear however that the Marlins were going to sign Juan Alvarez back to a minor league deal and invite him to ST. I think if he gets a real shot (more than the like 10 innings he got last year) he could prove to be a reliable lefty in the pen.

he is a safety net, dont be shocked if a youngster impressive Jack in ST and gets the 5 spot for atleast a month...

depth is never a bad thing. not a bad price either. if you can take coors, you can take pps as a pitcher.

I suppose he is a bit better than Tejera... someone to bridge us until AJ comes back. Hopefully we don't pay the guy anywhere near $1M. $500K tops.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooo......please dont sign this guy. i rather have Lima or El Duque 100 times before this guy....this guy really sucks,if there gonna get this guy they might as well let me pitch ill sign for leauge min.

Darren Oliver: Pitching

Oliver doesn't overpower anybody, but he is not afraid to throw his 86-88 MPH fastball. He also has a cut fastball that he runs in on righthanded hitters. His main breaking pitch is a slider, but he will throw an occasional curveball. And he will change speeds. His command is good enough that hitters know what he's going to do, but he still gets away with it. When Oliver's command is off, however, he can get into trouble quickly. The strange thing is that as good as his command is coming inside, he is hesitant to pitch away to righthanded hitters. He could help himself by changing location and getting righthanded hitters off balance.
