At least with Rocker we would get a low risk high reward type of deal. We all know how good he was not to long ago and he still has good stuff.

That's not true, and being so close to the Rangers you should know that. Useless lefties don't hang around for years to start. Oliver pitches well enough to be a decent starter. Not great, not enough to compete with our top 5, but enough to compete with Tejera and Wayne for a start or two, and some servicable innings out of the 'pen.

 

I'm not really excited about this trade either though. Oliver's a sinker ball pitcher, and might see his ERA go down from PPS' deep fences and climate, but with the short infield grass will test the gloves of our infielders.

If he does fill in for Burnett, where does he go when Burnett gets back? I don't remember him pitching that much out of the bullpen in years past, but maybe he can do it. But what if he stinks it up, do we just release him? At least with a youngster, if he stinks it up, you can send him down when Burnett comes back.

oliver is an extreme groundball pitcher whose ERA with the rockies was the same as his career ERA.

 

his WHIP of 1.45 is pretty bad for a starter and his ERA of 5.04 was helped by coors.

 

i could see his ERA getting worse in pro player since he's a groundballer and the outfield is quite spacious. he's the ideal pitcher for coors, but there's nothing about PPS that could possibly help him.

 

i'd rather have tejera or phelps as our #5 starter. i don't exactly think we'll be stacked in the long relief dept, especially since we're short a starter, so i can *remotely* see why we might be interested in oliver. i hope they stay away.

Eric Milton is being paid millions to put up those numbers. OK, he's a lefty too. Bobby Jones might be a good example.

 

Lefties aren't kept around to start. They only hold onto their sad careers as lefty relief specialists. Oliver does not fit this role yet.

Assuming Oliver passes his physical and performs well until AJ returns, he becomes a terrific piece of tradebait come the first trading deadline.

 

I've been saying for some time that the Marlins needed a guy like DO (although I was surprised they brought in a lefty) to carry the early season load. As for him staying with the team for the whole year, that to some extent depends on what Phelps (and to a lesser degree Tejera) shows. The Marlins are not going to have three lefties in the pen and if AJ is able to resume his stellar performance, one or more of three (Oliver,Phelps,Tejera) will be gone.

MIAMI -- The competition for the Marlins' fifth starter spot is about to intensify.

MLB.com has learned the World Series champs are close to signing 33-year-old left-hander Darren Oliver, who was 13-11 (5.04 ERA) with the Rockies last season.

 

Oliver is scheduled to be in Miami on Wednesday to take a physical. Pending the outcome, the team could announce signing Oliver on either Wednesday or Thursday.

 

The contract would be for one year at less than $1 million.

 

Entering his 12th season, Oliver is expected to compete with Michael Tejera for the fifth starter spot.

 

The Marlins are seeking depth in the rotation until A.J. Burnett is ready to start.

 

Burnett, recovering from Tommy John ligament replacement surgery, is expected to be available in early May.

 

Oliver appeared in 33 games with the Rockies, making 32 starts. The lefty compiled 180 1/3 innings. He had one complete game, while striking out 88 and walking 61.

 

If Oliver wins the fifth starter spot, Tejera would go back into a relief role. The team is seeking left-handers in the bullpen. Oliver could also be used in the bullpen once Burnett is ready.

I like the move. I've seen him pitch in person. Rockie fans seemed to love him and he had 13 wins pitching at Coors. I'll take him as a #5 or long relief any day. Great job Beinfest.

1.269 OPS Bases Loaded, .500 OBP ...damn near gives up runs automatically.

 

This guy starts out well and then gets shelled after 60 pitches or so.

 

A bit tougher against lefties, but when they hit him, they hit him hard.
