February 7, 200422 yr Friday?s moves BASEBALL Northern League JOLIET JACKHAMMERS?Announced the contract of Pete Rose, Jr. has been purchased by the Colorado Rockies of the NL.
February 7, 200422 yr I like it when players sons get into it. I really hope Timmy Raines Jr., Tony Gwynn Jr., and Fielder Jr. all do awesome. And ken griffrey jr...he's cool too.
February 7, 200422 yr rose jr wasnt given a good chance by the reds they gave him one game this guy deserves a chance
February 7, 200422 yr This reeks of a publicity stunt. A) he's in an indie league on an indie team. Not minor league, indie. And his hitting percentage sucks. B) he played eight days for the Red's and sucked. He's got as much chance making the Rockies as Garth Brooks does whatever camp he's in.
February 7, 200422 yr Author oh wow....8 days? that's enough of a sample size to make a determination on a player. lucky for Manny Ramirez, you weren't in charge of the Indians a decade ago.
February 7, 200422 yr I saw him when he was with the Reading Phillies - and was not too impressed. Here's a link to his career minor league stats: http://milb.com/players/aview.asp?id=A88042&season=2002 Not overly impressive, though he did have a good year in 1998. It's funny to watch him bounce around organizations, continuously returning to the Reds (The Lookouts are their AA team).
February 7, 200422 yr um.... pete rose jr sucks. Thank you Das! The guy's 35 years old. He ain't getting any better.

How about the fact that he couldn't get a job with a real MINOR league team. That says all I need to know about him. If his name was John Suchandsuch he wouldn't be in Rockies camp.

Yeah and what I'm saying is to claim that you can only take that 8 games with the Reds to determine how good the kid can play is ludicrous. Like if the Reds had played him all season this mediocre kid who was never a prospect and was in the independent leagues the very next season would have become some awesome player. He basically had one good year at a minor league player and that was the year he got called up. He came back the next year with the Reds, they traded him, then he got released, he played in the independent leagues for 98 and 99 and then was in the Phillies orginization in 2000 where he hit a whopping .247 in double A. He then moved back to Cincinnati's orginization in 2001 and hit a stellar .264 in double A. He's a career .260 hitter in the minor leagues and I'm supposed to believe that if the Reds had given him more of a chance he would have been awesome? In my opinion, the Reds gave him more of a chance than he deserved. He didn't belong in the major leagues, he was only called up because he was Pete Rose's son. The guy is a bad baseball player. It's just a fact. It's a publicity stunt, call a spade a spade. And the small sample size comparison is irrelevant. Manny Ramirez was a MASSIVE prospect. Pete Rose Jr. wasn't a prospect. Basically, his career looks like this, he spent the first 8 years of his career toiling around in the low minors, doing basically nothing. Putting up averages like .232 and .217 and .218. Then he comes to Chattanooga in 1997 (the year he gets called up) and hits .308 with 25 home runs and 98 RBIs and he's on the radar screen. They decide to call him up, he goes 2 for 14 in 11 games, they probably say he's not ready yet, so they send him to Triple A, where he hits .225 in 40 ABs. He comes back to camp the next year with the Reds, doesn't make the team, he plays okay ball in AAA (hits .278 with 3 home runs), they trade him to Pittsburgh, I believe. So, he's in Nashville and he hits .208, gets released, and spent 2 years in independent ball before even getting another look. Now, I'm sorry, but if the guy would have deserved more time at the major league level, someone would have picked him up. They don't just let talented guys sit on the street. He was 27 when he got called up, he got called up because he had a career year in 1997 and, at the time, the Reds never denied the fact he got called up because of his name. He never earned the chance to get back to the majors. 11 games and 14 at-bats IS enough time to make a determination on a player when it's coupled with his career history and what they see on the field. There's more that goes into whether a guy can play major league ball than his major league numbers. If the guy had been stellar in the minors and that's all the shot he ever got, I'd agree, but he couldn't hit for 90% of his career in the minors, talent scouts are paid a lot of money for what they do. It's not like they ignored his minor league career, saw he went 2 for 14 and determined he sucked. They did comprehensive research before they determined he sucked. Under this logic, they should call me up and give me 100 ABs before they decide I can't play. There's an A) and B) to that comment that was orginially referenced. You ignored the more relevant part to rip the less important throwaway part. The A part means a hell of a lot more than the B part, which I will agree has virtually no impact on the final conclusion that Pete Rose Jr. sucks. And to the guy who said he deserves a chance, this isn't the first time he's been in a major league camp. There's tons of guys who deserve this chance more than him. Literally hundreds.
