February 18, 200422 yr Owens, Dolphins share interest By Jamey Eisenberg, Palm Beach Post Staff Writer Wednesday, February 18, 2004 Terrell Owens would be interested in playing for the Dolphins. An NFL source said Tuesday that Owens, the star wide receiver of the San Francisco 49ers, has the Dolphins on "a short list" of teams he would consider playing for after he exercises an escape clause in his contract that will make him an unrestricted free agent March 3. The NFL prohibits contact between a pending free agent and any team other than his current one until March 3, but a league source said the Dolphins also would be interested in speaking to Owens once he becomes a free agent. The source said the Dolphins' priority is to address their needs at offensive line and quarterback, but to also find a receiver. Owens is "a talent the Dolphins would have to consider." "Anything is possible," the source said. "If things fell right, who knows." Even though Owens is interested and fits a need for the Dolphins, he still might be too expensive. The Dolphins are about $17 million over the salary cap for next season but will trim that before March 3 with cuts and by restructuring several contracts. Owens' salary for 2003 reportedly reached $6 million, making him the NFL's highest-paid wide receiver. He has talked about asking his new team for a $20 million signing bonus, but about a dozen unnamed league executives have been quoted as saying they would be "shocked" if that happened. The 49ers are willing to let Owens go because they appear to have other pressing needs in re-signing Pro Bowl linebacker Julian Peterson and reworking quarterback Jeff Garcia's contract. The 49ers could put the "franchise" tag on Owens, but that could cost them more than $7 million in 2004 cap space to retain him, something they appear unlikely to do. On the field, Owens, 30, has been one of the best receivers in the NFL -- and caused some of the league's biggest controversies. The 6-foot-3, 225-pounder has caught at least 80 passes and topped 1,000 yards in each of the past four years. But Owens also has criticized coaches and teammates and been scrutinized for touchdown celebrations, including posing on the star in Dallas, dancing with pompons and pulling a Sharpie out of his sock to autograph a football. Owens said he would like to play for a team in the South and one close to making a Super Bowl run. The Dolphins also would have to address their quarterback situation because that is one of Owens' priorities. The other teams on Owens' short list include Atlanta, Philadelphia and Baltimore. Jacksonville, Buffalo, Tampa Bay and the New York Jets also have been mentioned as possible destinations for Owens. If the Dolphins cannot sign Owens, another option at receiver could be Seattle's Darrell Jackson. February 18, 200422 yr Defintely would love to have him down here because of his talent but I think the Dolphins have to think twice about this if they were willing to make an offer because his attitude creates rifts between teammates. But talent wise Owens and Chambers would make an awesome duo. :thumbup

Surtain is very quiet, so I don't know why he's on that list. He lets his play do the talking, unlike Madison, who lets his talking do the talking. Chambers isn't particularly rambunctious either. And neither is Ricky Williams. I'm intrigued by TO, but he'll continue to place himself above the team. This is sometimes okay when there is enough talent (see Keyshawn and the Bucs) on a team...it seems like other stars are able to ignore all the baggage that comes with me-first players. But the Dolphins don't have enough talent, and chemistry is therefore an important issue. So, I'm intrigued by TO, but if I were GM (am I GM? who's GM today? is it still Spielman? Cause I'm available...), I would take a flyer on TO because 1) he's an a**hole, and 2) we have much bigger concerns (O-line, QB).
February 18, 200422 yr i agree with minus. wut's da point of having TO when we currently dont have a QB who can get him the ball downfield and an Oline that cant give the QB time to throw the ball??? id rather we spent it on some quality linemen and try to get a receiver through the draft or a cheaper option.

I'm not associating this with his name change at all, but Surtain is actually quite conceded, although he does back it up and with force, as well as Madison. Chambers is more on the quiet side, but McMichael is also one of those Shannon Sharp like "Give me the damn ball" tight ends.

And letting ogunleye go might be a smart idea also, having two 1st round picks and two 3rd round picks will really benefit the dolphins at this point.

February 19, 200422 yr I dont see the Phins making any MAJOR moves this offseason. maybe just minor signings or small trade here or there. All the Phins ever do is try to help the defense. doesnt help them.

February 19, 200422 yr The Dolphins are like 17 million over the cap right now I think. They are gonna try to restructure a bunch of deals but I don't know how they could afford T.O. If they want a WR then they should take one in the draft.
