  1. If Uggla doesn't deserve a contract (doesn't have to be 5 years) then Hermida doesn't deserve a long-term contract. Forget how Uggla compares to other second-basemen. Forget his rookie & sophomore stats. Forget all of that and take a good look at Uggla throughout this year. Make this year the deciding factor if he's worthy of a new contract. People have the ability to refine at any age. I don't see why that would be out of reach for Uggla. He can improve his defense. He can improve his bat. He ain't gonna be perfect, but if the good out-weighs the bad by a nice amount then he should be first-in-line for a contract consideration. Thats all. I just wanna make it clear that he should be the most deserving if he pans out this year. Not Hermida, unless he sums up some nice numbers and becomes a play-maker. Even then, I'd wait to see if he could do it on his following year as well. The Marlins should sign no one if they're worried about age. They should also forget locking up potential. Let them first show-up in more than one way. Hermida can wait if he's so special. a) Why would I forget his first 2 years, and just look at 1 hot month of baseball? ...I guess we signed the wrong guy b/c right now, Uggla is doing better than Hanley (yet, we all know, Hanley is the better offensive player). b) He's 28. Your defense only gets worse the more you age. Why would his range get better as he gets older? c) Have you ever seen Hermida's home/road splits from last year? It's no secret the guy was 2 completely different hitters...since we're leaving our trash football stadium, and going into a new 1 by 2011, I'd expect Hermida to only get better. d) Not every player develops like Hanley Ramirez. Hermida is 24 years old; at the age of 24, Uggla was in the minor leagues. Meanwhile, Hermida has already proven to be a professional hitter, who's only getting better and better (as a hitter). e) Since last year's All-Star Break, Hermida's been, arguably, our best offensive player. f) For those that don't like Hermida defensively in RF...you can always move him to LF (if Miguel Cabrera can be a respectable LF'er, Hermida would only be better...it's much easier than RF, and if you put in Hermida in LF, we would have an above average arm, at the very least, in LF). g) The Marlins have financial problems when you compare 'em to other teams; why not sign a player who's 4 years younger? A guy who's already proven to be solid, and was once the #1 prospect in all of baseball? Instead of Uggla who we already have a replacement for (Coghlan)? Do you seriously want to see Dan Uggla till he's 33, 34, 35?? What is SO special about Dan Uggla? A) They were his Rookie & Sophomore seasons, right? Newcomers don't enter the majors perfect or even close. You missinterpreted my comment. I said to take a good look the whole year, not just this hot month of his. I think by then, if the Marlins wanted to, they could contemplate best what they'ed do with Uggla. B) I just felt like he was progressing nicely from his sophomore year defensively. He's had his share of errors, but they haven't been gamebreakers or too costly from what I can remember. C) I don't get it? How would the stadium affect his play? Cause of size? If it's that then he better adapt quicker cause the new Stadium will stay a pitcher's park. D) Oh well. I've always felt that you should try to keep players that have produced. Especially the ones who've done it in nice proportions. I've seen players still produce in their mid-30's so that kinda leaves me optimistic with Uggla, but the consensus is that age most likely becomes a problem and I agree. E) Hermida, like Uggla, needs to show more. In Uggla's part, he needs to show he can do spectacular throughout a whole year. Hermida needs to shine in other areas as well. Doesn't he have home-run power? I mean, I thought Hermida would have more than 4 HRs, but maybe I was being too optimistic. Also, Didn't Hermida start the year on a bit of a slump? I know he started getting into a nice roll when he started hitting second. F) Of course. Trade Willingham. He's the oldest anyways, if you wanna look at it that way. G) Dude, I'm still on the fence with all of this cause Hermida has yet to compare with Uggla with what he's done for us. Plus, a number 1 prospect of years past can easily become a bust. Nothings for certain so I'm not gonna be swayed by something like that. Look, I'm not saying we should sign Uggla right now. I'm just saying Uggla should be the first one given thought when the FO contemplates additional contracts. How long are we gonna just bank on potential? I see Uggla as a good thing. Another one of those Marlins we'll one day let go, then he'll start thriving in another stadium....maybe. I mean, it has happened before. Sign no one. There. That's my stand. Sign them when they show up in a BIG WAY!
  2. I'd go with O. J. Mayo. Yeah, I'm a pure sucker for all the hype and I'll let yal all in on a secret.... ...You can tell if a player is gonna be great or not if they have a great, unique name. No lie. Look at all the superstars in the NBA right now. Dwayne Wade/His name pretty much rolls off the tongue, Tracy McGrady/Awesome combination, Allen Iverson/Has a unique last name. The list goes on. They all have great and/or unique names. Thats why I think Brook Lopez will turn out to be a bust or nothing too special. Remember Andrew Bogut? Tell me his name didn't resonate that of a superstars in the NBA. It only happens in the NBA though. It might sound ludicrous and dumb, but it's the truth. At least for this generation. Anybody agree? :sweating lol

  4. MAROONE FIELD! I can see that happening... CO?OOOOOO Park would be a hilarious name! Imagine an away team hitting a homerun then you suddenly hear, "CO?OOOOOOOO!," blast from the speakers. :lol
  5. So they pretty much called up Brett Caroll for nothing. Why not send down Andino? I guess it doesn't matter. Hopefully this turns out to be a good acquisition.
  6. 7th - Tankersley, Justin Miller, Kensing 8th - Lindstrom, Pinto, Gardner 9th - Kevin Gregg :sweating Long Relief - Doug Waechter
  7. see topic. Hmmm, planning on stalking someone ? Most preferable kidnap The diamondbacks starting pitchers. :mischief j/k
  8. Celia Cruz Field No way are we naming our stadium after a dead woman. That's a curse waiting to happen. :thumbdown Bacardi is such a cool name. I'd love it if the stadium were named Bacardi Field or Bacardi Park. It just stands out in a good way. What other companies are based in Miami? :mis2
  9. I wouldn't sign Uggla right at this moment either just because of this start. I'd wait till the end of the season and see how he finishes off the season. If the stats are favorable then by all means he should be the first priority. If he can do it once, he can surely do it again. My philosophy with a player like Hermida is him having to show me like how Uggla has been showing us all his worth. I'm not gonna bank everything on future potential. Sign him now and hope it turns out beneficial? Hermida glimmers in potential, but in no way does he give off this "OMG he's gonna be one of a kind" vibe. I'll repeat, AS OF RIGHT NOW Uggla is the most deserving. If I were Uggla and I ended the year with huge numbers, I'd be pretty surprised if the FO gave Hermida a long-term contract before myself and I'd be even more surprised when the FO explains to me how they think Hermida might turn out to be something special when he hasn't shown it yet. Just bits and pieces of good signs that leave us all with optimism. But hey. If Hermida starts doing these things you all say he'll do, then by all means Hermida becomes the bigger priority cause of his age. Though, I have to say, I've seen some pretty good 30 and older players. Chipper Jones is a nice example of someone who has aged well. I'm not comparing Uggla to Jones but age-wise it gives some foresight of what Uggla might turn out to be a couple years down.
  10. Someone needs to explain to me how Hermida deserves a long-term contract more than Uggla as of right now. I like Hermida's bat but... Oh and for all the people who keep saying Uggla has reached his full potential or has already topped off, you guys make it sound like he has a short ceiling or something. His may be in his prime, but he sure as hell is playing great. What more can you ask of him. Even his defense has improved from past years. I would imagine this is the kind of stuff you would want from someone in his prime cause it's more than satisfying. His age should be the only concern.
  11. All I'm gonna say is that Uggla is the most deserving of a contract right now. I'd rather hold off on signing anyone long-term, but if we were going in that direction Uggla should be at the front of the line. I'm not gonna all of a sudden rely on fortune-telling with some of these other players and prospects. Hermida needs to break-out before any thought of signing him long. Our prospects will be hard-pressed trying to match what Uggla has been doing for us.
  12. Yea, I don't see why everyone is sooo high on Hermida. Has he really bust-out in any category as of right now? Uggla is soooo key for this team, especially now that we're without Willingham. He brings in those key runs and is a nice fail-safe if Hanley goes in one of those droughts of his. Uggla suffers from that too... But then thats why we have Hanley. XP Jacobs is expendable. One good start to a year and he becomes an asset to our team for years to come? No way. Willingham rocks in the same boat. I'd wait on Hermida & Maybin. As of right now, I'd be fine if Scott Olsen was beefed up in trade value then traded for some goods. I read a comment saying he would leave on his first chance. Send him packin cause we conveniently grant wishes. So all in all, if Uggla keeps this pace up until the end of the season with minimal cold spells, He'd be the first I'd look into signing long-term. Thats if he comes cheap and leaves himself tradeable. Seriously, the only thing I'm worried with Uggla is his age, it's a big one though.
  13. I wish we could keep them all, but..... I say drop or trade: Jorge Cantu - He's been our quick fix for the season. I don't see him as a long-term Marlins player. Josh Willingham - The dude is almost 30 and Brett Carroll is a nice up-&-comer thats prime for a chance at an outfield spot. People love to tell us we have bad defense, well Brett Carroll is our answer. It would suck if we lost him but thats how we roll down here in South Florida. Mike Jacobs - Man, this is a tough one. He's finally playing up to his potential, but should the Marlins really go after this one year bait he's set up? You know what... It's a toss up between Dan and Jacobs. I'd be happy with either one if we had to pick a single player. Dan is older than Jacobs, but by only a year... Kevin Gregg - ...I never liked Superman. Now the people we need to chain up for at least another year: Scott Olsen - You know I was kinda torn on this one, but only because someone posted about him intending to leave on the first available chance on this forum. Now that right there just makes me wanna trade his butt straight to Japan, if possible, or wherever and reap in some prospects, but I say for now keep him. Along the way he'll be rising his trade value so thats a plus on our side if anything negative were to come up. Jeremy Hermida - Yeah, I wanna keep him, but I really don't have much of a reason. He's a great, young player, but I have yet to see him excel in any particular department. What's he supposed to be? A power hitter? A BA-hitter? Andrew Miller - I think he's shown promise quite quickly. He got put straight into the rotation from day 1, floundered a bit in his first few starts, but has now awaken in his last few starts. When the new Marlins Stadium finally opens, it better include "MILLER-TIME!" Renyel Pinto & his posey... most of them at least :mischief - It's the most demoralizing thing to witness a win in reach just escape because of a poor bullpen. Cameron Maybin - Keep him on a short leash, don't lock him up. He's proven nothing so far in the minor leagues so he deserves no free pass.
  14. Now this is a thread worth making your first post on! Finally the dominos are falling in a good way. We've got a stadium coming up and now we're finally looking into locking up our talent long-term. It would pretty much be a two-for cause the Marlins are doing well so far this season. As a South Florida sports fan, its nice knowing that at least one of your teams look to have a positive future. A few months ago, with the struggles between the Dolphins, Heat, Panthers, and Marlins... I wasn't so sure of what the future would bring. AWESOME NEWS!!! GO MARLINS!
