Should the Marlins lock Uggla up next?

Featured Replies

Did anyone else read Izzy's column in The Herald today about how the Marlins should lock up Uggla next?

http://www.miamiherald.com/591/story/536785.html

I mean, I like Dan Uggla as much as the next guy, but I nearly fell out of my seat when I read this statement in the article

So why not secure Uggla to a long-term deal? Let him join the growing group of players with fewer than three years experience who are raking in the bucks. Uggla has certainly produced more at a major-league plate than Ryan Braun, Troy Tulowitzki or Evan Longoria

Does this guy even know about baseball?

He also misspelled Ryne Sandberg's name, calling him "Ryan Sandberg".

I get the feeling that baseball is not this guys forte...

Baseball is certainly not what Israel knows best. He was originally the Herald's Heat beat writer, and now writes occasionally on UF athletics. It's really amazing what a piece of crap the Herald sports section is.

I have noticed one thing. On this site everyone wants Hermida locked up next. On the radio, Uggla seems to be the choice. I'm not as hyped up on getting Hermida signed. Especially not as a RF.

Why, if you can lock him up on a great deal now... why not, he's proved he can be the OPS monster a lot pegged him as... just gotta avoid the freak injuries... *knock on wood*

Yes lock up Uggla and Jacobs.

unnecessary

I'd rather lock up Hermida and Maybin

We can get some great talent for Uggla, and we have a Top 100 prospect in Chris Coghlan who can play 2B.

Jacobs is 28, and I don't see him as part of the long-term future. Gaby Sanchez can play, and he's a hometown boy, as well. Plus, Jake has proven to be injury prone, as well. Injuries only get worse, as a player gets older.

I have heard talks of moving Uggla to 3B. Would you guys like this idea?

You'd have to figure that is where they plan on putting Matt Dominguez in the future, though.

Yes lock up Uggla and Jacobs.

I'm for locking up Hermida. I hate to say it, but I don't think signing Maybin to a Longoria-type deal right now would be the wisest thing.

Unnecessary? you have no idea what you are talking about.Stop thinking cheap and think talent.Uggla and Jacobs are key to this team.Hermida is not, Cantu is not, Traenor/Rabelo are not.Willingham is replaceable.

Uggla and Jacobs should be locked up in the near future.Maybin should be locked up, but not until after 2009 or 2010.

Yes lock up Uggla and Jacobs.

lol...Hermida is 4 years younger than Jacobs, and has more potential than Jacobs.

We have a replacement for Jacobs in the minor leagues...Hermida, not so much.

And Chris Coghlan has lots of potential at 2B; an Uggla trade would bring value back.

...once again, unnecessary.

Yes lock up Uggla and Jacobs.

Hanley, Jacobs and Uggla are the players we need to build around.Uggla could move to third and Coghlan to second.

an Uggla trade would bring value back.

So would Willingham.

IMo the offensive players to build around are Hermida, Hanley and Maybin. Uggla, Jacobs, Willingham, could all be moved.

If Uggla has the monster year that he's on pace for, you'd be stupid to not lock him up. Hermida hasn't earned a big paycheck yet. He's shown signs, but I want to see a break out year from him first. Willingham was hitting the ball extremely well before he got injured. Jacobs is a serious left handed power threat. Its hard really to part with any of these guys. I just wish we had this kind of talent in the pitching rotation.

Yea, I don't see why everyone is sooo high on Hermida. Has he really bust-out in any category as of right now? Uggla is soooo key for this team, especially now that we're without Willingham. He brings in those key runs and is a nice fail-safe if Hanley goes in one of those droughts of his. Uggla suffers from that too... But then thats why we have Hanley. XP

Jacobs is expendable. One good start to a year and he becomes an asset to our team for years to come? No way. Willingham rocks in the same boat. I'd wait on Hermida & Maybin. As of right now, I'd be fine if Scott Olsen was beefed up in trade value then traded for some goods. I read a comment saying he would leave on his first chance. Send him packin cause we conveniently grant wishes.

So all in all, if Uggla keeps this pace up until the end of the season with minimal cold spells, He'd be the first I'd look into signing long-term. Thats if he comes cheap and leaves himself tradeable. Seriously, the only thing I'm worried with Uggla is his age, it's a big one though.

I can't believe some of you guys. Some of you people speak of uggla like if he was the average second baseman out there, this guy has been raking ever since he hit the majors with us. Why does he have to get traded to make room for Coghlan who is just "potential"....Wow unbelievable. Same with Jake, why does he have to go for Gaby, just cuz he's home-grown??? get the f outta here. :banghead

If Uggla has the monster year that he's on pace for, you'd be stupid to not lock him up.

I would think they should sell high, right after his monster year.

Coghlan? I'll take the prospects we get for Uggla with him on the come up.

The love for Chris Coghlan is sickening. I don't really know what guys expect, but most already have him penned in as an allstar and I'm still trying to figure out what makes him exceptional. Most prospects, including Coghlan, couldnt dream of being as good as Uggla.

Jacobs hasn't yet proven that he can get on base consistently. His slugging is up from the last 2 years, but his OBP is still hovering around .300.

I have noticed one thing. On this site everyone wants Hermida locked up next. On the radio, Uggla seems to be the choice. I'm not as hyped up on getting Hermida signed. Especially not as a RF.

I see Jeremy as guy that had his bat ready for the majors but not his glove. Bad decisions fielding at times. But it something that he can work out of. He has the tools. He will grow into the position. I think it's better than having the glove but the bat isn't ready. Like Reggie or any number of OFers that have graced our lineup over the past few years.

I've come around on Uggla. I used to think he was just a masher. Now I think he is a really good masher, who plays an adequate 2nd base. He's still young enough that a 5-7 year deal will not be passed his prime. He has also shown that he can consistently hit 30+ HRs from a position where such power is a rare commodity. I say lock him up.

While I do agree that Uggla is proving himself and swaying my opinion as to whether we should keep him or sell high, someone needs to tell Israel Gutierrez that there are more hitting stats besides HR and RBI's, namely, AVG and K's. It's ridiculous to say that Uggla is clearly produced more than Braun, Tulowitzki or Longoria. By the way, Uggla is in his third full season, while those other guys have all played around one full season or less.

If Uggla has the monster year that he's on pace for, you'd be stupid to not lock him up.

I would think they should sell high, right after his monster year.

Why? Just for the sake of selling high? Maybe we should just trade EVERYONE after their best season. Yeah, that's a REAL good way to stay competitive and build a fan base with the new stadium coming around. Hey, I bet we can get a lot for Hanley Ramirez, so let's trade him too. This kind of thinking really disappoints me.
