6/21 Postgame
Yankees fans need to learn to shut up when you lose a game and a series and not answer everything with "we've got 26 rings" Ha! They are so annoying. I went on Friday and there was this one guy who had a seat right above the Yanks dugout who literally stood up each time one of our pitchers threw strikes and he tried arguing balls to the ump. EACH AND EVERY TIME. Amazing. I think I like the Mets fans better. It pains me to say that.

6/21 Postgame
It doesn't matter who closes, this argument will just keep going on and on. I'm new to this board but last year I frequented the marlins mlb.com board. When Gregg was in the closer's role, and kept blowing save after save, we were all like 'why doesnt lindstrom close??'. The same thing is happening now. Doesn't matter who it is, everyone wants to see the other guy close ... until he starts pitching a mess out there. Matty got the job done, regardless of how sloppy he was. I'll take that every night, even with a BS every now and then. You'll take 2 runs every night? I think you missed my point. It's ok.

He got the save. We got the W, I don't care if he comes in and gives up 2 runs every time we have a 3 run lead in the ninth, as long as we eventually win the game, I am ok with it. Yeah, I don't want a guy who can only pitch with a 3 run lead on my team. That's Hayden Penn. It doesn't matter who closes, this argument will just keep going on and on. There were some pretty good posters last year who made some compelling arguments and had great discussions and I can only assume they are on this board now.

5/23 Post Burial
So, somebody please answer me this... If you're planning on taking West out for the top of the 6th, and you have met on 1st and 2nd, nobody out in a close game, and West is up to bat Why in the hell do you let West hit in that situation? I know West did his job to get the runners over to 2nd and 3rd, but don't you take a chance at the big inning? wtf! I'd blame this on Fredi but he was 800 miles away. Yeah, the bugged the hell out of me too. When it was the 9th, sure, sac bunt. 5th? Play to put as many runs as you can on the board, not to tie. I was looking forward to taking my kid to the game tomorrow (today?) But after this debacle, why the **** would I want to spend my hard earned money watching these clowns? Especially when I know that 4 out of every 5 dollars goes to Crater-face Huizenga and the rest to "mini-me" Samson? You'll go to the game because you are not a bandwagon fan.

Hope
After reading the following article, the whole thought of sending our theoretically second best pitcher to the minors for adjustments doesn't fill me with pains in my stomach: Rehabilitated Willis gets first win as a Tiger The glass is half full for me ...

Leadership
A veteran clubhouse leader. Hanley is NOT it. Helms is NOT it. Luis Gonzalez WAS it last year. Hanley is definitely not a leader. Anyone else see him laughing and having a good time on the bench when down by 12 in the 3rd? ?? That is an unacceptable emotion to have at that point in the game by our superstar. They simply don't care, or at least they don't seem to. People should stop comparing this team to the 03 team. These guys have no heart and its a shame, as they have so much talent. I am looking forwards to looking back at this post a month from now to realize I jumped the gun on these guys, as we will be in first place by then

SI.com article - 5 Worst Owners in Baseball
Loria should be worse than 4th. I know why? Name one player we have from the 03 WS team...oh right you can't After 03, we tried to emulate our success for a few years and we simply could not make the postseason. To management, this meant our team was 'broken' and we went ahead and attempted to fix it. The team that is out there now is a result of this. There was no need to retain our 2003 WS champion players, and therefore we moved on and got fresh blood pumping through the team. The management made the right moves, but we are all on this board to differ in opinion. The idea of retaining champion players year after year does not work in MLB. It is not hard to find examples of teams that have spent fortunes to do this and have not gotten WS titles in return.

SI.com article - 5 Worst Owners in Baseball
He has been awful in Florida, but he was also an awful owner in Montreal. He has the double whammy going on. I beg to differ. Under Loria: - we won a WS - we have a stable of some of the best young prospects in MLB - we currently have a team capable of making the postseason - we are going to remain in Florida, most likely because of the stadium deal - we signed a superstar to a respectable multi-year deal, the first time this team has done anything of the like I'll stop there. How is this a sign of awful ownership, as you put it?

SI.com article - 5 Worst Owners in Baseball
Loria should get very little(if any) credit for the stadium because his contribution is minuscule. If I remember my math, his portion comes down to about $1 or 2 million a year that will be covered completely by gate money. Regardless, it is under Loria's ownership that the team finally has their own stadium. You can also argue that because of this, Loria has kept the team in Florida. This makes him far from the 4th worst MLB owner.

SI.com article - 5 Worst Owners in Baseball
Yes, the second coming of Wayne. Except he got us a stadium. And kept the championship team pretty much intact for 2 additional seasons. And signed Hanley to a multiyear contract. He is exactly like Wayne! Where do these sports writers come from? You just nailed it.

SI.com article - 5 Worst Owners in Baseball
According to the folks at SI, Mr. Loria is the 4th worst owner in MLB: SI's Best & Worst Owners Despite the best efforts of another crop of youngsters, Loria may be running a second franchise into the ground. The art dealer turned a nation of fans against him with his first team, the Expos, before forcing their move from Montreal and selling them back to Major League Baseball. He then took control of the Marlins and watched his exciting team shock the Yankees in the 2003 World Series and then became Miami fans' worst nightmare: the second coming of Wayne Huizenga. The Marlins slowly have been rebuilding themselves with more young talent, despite the lowest cash outlay provided by any owner, and could be turning a corner soon. That is, until Hanley Ram?rez and Dan Uggla are shown the door like Josh Beckett, Derrek Lee and Miguel Cabrera. Makes you wonder if they even realize that by doing things such as 'showing Josh Beckett the door', Loria is able to attain young stars such as Hanley ... :whistle

Bo Porter
Bo strikes again. I was at the game yesterday and sat pretty close to his side of the field. Awful ... I second the notion to nickname him 'Windmill'.

Catching Matt Lindstrom
What a very interesting stat! Anyone know of similar pitcher/catcher examples of this? I'm intrigued ...

5/4 Fish of the Game
Hopper was fantastic. Also good to see hanley make a good hrad slide at the end of the game even though he was wa out of the base line and couldnt have touched the bag with his hand. Plus he looks to be getting locked in at the plate. Also it seems as though anything uggla hits will be caught no matter where or how hard. Agreed on uggla. Just terrible luck ... that near walk-off HR was so close to clearing the wall. His luck has got to turn around soon.

5/4 Fish of the Game
Where are all the hopper haters now? It's amusing how someone can throw one bad inning, and all of the 'send him to the minors!' posts start piling on. One brilliant game afterwards, all those people disappear .... He was fantastic last night and it's good to know we can rely on him in a close game like this.

For Marlins, numbers can be deceiving ...
I just read this May 3 article on MLB.com: For Marlins, numbers can be deceiving ... According to hitting coach Presley: Yet, in team batting average, Florida rates 27th (.243), and the team's on-base percentage is 23rd (.323). The Marlins also pace the Major Leagues with 202 strikeouts. "Really, if you're hitting .250, .260, .270, it really doesn't matter, it's always about runs scored, and when you do it," hitting coach Jim Presley said. "To me, that's the most important thing." He then goes on to say: "You can hit .225 but score the runs when you need to, and you're going to win some ballgames," Presley said. "With our pitching staff, if we can score four or five, we're going to win a lot of ballgames." I wholeheartedly disagree with him and believe that in order for us to win on a consistent basis, we can not rely on the long ball. We need to get our speedsters on base with basehits much more often that we are doing now, and supplement this with more walks. Add to that the few guys in our lineup that can use power, we have a nice mix of small/long ball. I thought the game was all about OBP and being able to capitalize once on base. I must be reading this article wrong, because it looks to me like Presley expects this squad to smack the balls way out there, and mainly during situational plays. This did not work well for Hermida yesterday flying out to the infield to kill our progress on Marmol. Someone please tell me I'm reading into this too much and that our hitting coach knows exactly what he's doing with these guys. Of all people, he should be the one preaching OBP and not situational power hitting.

5/01 MARLINS @ Cubs
I feel like bumping those dumb "Bonifacio" threads that were created TWO weeks into the season... you have to give the young guys some time to come around... exactly. can't wait to see all the same threads pop up again the next time the team slumps.

5/01 MARLINS @ Cubs
