June 22, 200917 yr FOTG: lindstrom, for that exciting close...and I was f***ing watching it on Gameday... Thank you Volstad for a quality start. Thank you Hanley for a beautiful game tying HR, and Cody, for the go ahead HR (who'd a thunk your number would be such a big hr?). Thank you Cantu for the much needed 2 rbi hit, and thank you Marlins for a series win over hte Yankees! 3 out, we are in this thing!
June 22, 200917 yr Coghlan got the ball rolling, he is the FOTG for me. Hanley with the clutch 2 run home run, Cody soon after that. And it was nice to see Volstad settle down after that rocky start. His trademark in his MLB career has been working out of trouble, he hasn't done that in his last few starts, bound to happen.
June 22, 200917 yr Cantu gets my vote. Nice clutch hitting by him in the 7th today. I still don't trust Lindstrom to close games. That was scary.
June 22, 200917 yr Before all the hating on Lindstrom comes on the post, to whoever reads this and wants to hate, F*** you, he got the job done. Yeah it was scary, but it's the Yankees for crying out loud. They have hitters who can hit realize that. Marlins win that's all that matters.
June 22, 200917 yr A 3B and a closer. Beinfest you get those 2 things before the deadline, and we're in business.

Yeah it was scary, but it's the Yankees for crying out loud. They have hitters who can hit realize that. Marlins win that's all that matters. Yeah, he got the "save." Btw, remember when you asked the other day? It's outings like these that often make the "save" stat an overrated stat.
June 22, 200917 yr Almost had a heart attack there in the end, but we took 2 out of 3 from the Yanks. That is always a good thing. Let's keep rolling.

We got the W, I don't care if he comes in and gives up 2 runs every time we have a 3 run lead in the ninth, as long as we eventually win the game, I am ok with it.
June 22, 200917 yr Coghlan with a solid game at the plate and also scored 2 runs. I don't really care though as long as we beat the asshole it's all good.

Yeah a 3 run "cushion" against the highest payroll in baseball with one of the best lineups money can buy; way overrated. Besides it's not about individual statistics, it's about winning as a team!

It just makes me wonder how he'd do if we were leading by only 1 run. *Shudder*

Yes, but he's talking about why the individual statistic save is overrated, something that many disagree with.

That doesn't mean the closer did his job. Forgive me if I don't believe that someone should be awarded a "save" when all he "saved" was his own mess, finishing with an ERA of 18 on the day, and a WHIP of 4. Fortunately, he's 14/16 in save opportunities. I'm sure that's all everyone here cares about, but when evaluating an individual's performance, I certainly look for more.
June 22, 200917 yr Are people actually defending a guy who just gave up two runs and who has been absolutely terrible this season? Are they then implying that he has a magical ability to only give up as many runs as we can afford? Come on!

Why are you, suddenly, changing the conversation? I know it's about the team. But right now we're talking about the closer. The closer didn't really do his job today. Hayden Penn can come in and allow 2 runs in 1 inning. Don't give me the highest payroll crap either. You're always making excuses for the guy. Lindstrom did a great job last night, and did not do so well today, at all. He, simply, continues his inconsistent ways. Unfortunately, b/c of the overrated save statistic...he'll remain the closer b/c he's now 14/16 in the role. But logic tells you (looking at some other stats) that he's truly playing with fire, and has gotten fortunate to have that %.

Yeah, I don't want a guy who can only pitch with a 3 run lead on my team. That's Hayden Penn. It doesn't matter who closes, this argument will just keep going on and on. I'm new to this board but last year I frequented the marlins mlb.com board. When Gregg was in the closer's role, and kept blowing save after save, we were all like 'why doesnt lindstrom close??'. The same thing is happening now. Doesn't matter who it is, everyone wants to see the other guy close ... until he starts pitching a mess out there. Matty got the job done, regardless of how sloppy he was. I'll take that every night, even with a BS every now and then. By the way, the other forum has become a ghost town. There were some pretty good posters last year who made some compelling arguments and had great discussions and I can only assume they are on this board now.
June 22, 200917 yr Btw, Volstad pitched well today. The 3 runs they scored off him were, basically, on POS luck. Jeter infield single. A walk. Teixiera's ball taking the f***ing weird bounce. ARod's jamshot to LF. Nice to see Volstad comeback against a good lineup b/c his 2 previous starts had sucked. Hopefully, Miller can continue pitching well on Tuesday. Would be nice to get to .500.

The only role in the world where you can pitch like sh*t, and other people still consider that you "got the job done."

Although Lindstrom has given up many runs and lots of hits and walks, he has gotten the job done given the situation, thus the 14 saves in 16 opportunities. As long as he continues to pitch to the situation, I have no issues with the way he is closing out games, as long as he continues to close out games. If he goes and has a few blown saves in a row, then yes he needs to be replaced, but at this current time he has done what he has needed to do, and that is close out games. I'm cool with him being the closer, no issues at all.
June 22, 200917 yr Author Change of topic Coghlan is continuing to excel in the leadoff spot. He scored all three times he reached base today. We just need to find the right number 2 hitter to complement him right now.
