The role of the closer is to come in and finish the game given the situation. Although Lindstrom has given up many runs and lots of hits and walks, he has gotten the job done given the situation, thus the 14 saves in 16 opportunities. As long as he continues to pitch to the situation, I have no issues with the way he is closing out games, as long as he continues to close out games. If he goes and has a few blown saves in a row, then yes he needs to be replaced, but at this current time he has done what he has needed to do, and that is close out games. I'm cool with him being the closer, no issues at all.

So you actually believe he has a magical ability to pitch to exactly what the situation is? Come on.

He got the save. We got the W, I don't care if he comes in and gives up 2 runs every time we have a 3 run lead in the ninth, as long as we eventually win the game, I am ok with it.

Yeah, I don't want a guy who can only pitch with a 3 run lead on my team. That's Hayden Penn.

It doesn't matter who closes, this argument will just keep going on and on. I'm new to this board but last year I frequented the marlins mlb.com board. When Gregg was in the closer's role, and kept blowing save after save, we were all like 'why doesnt lindstrom close??'. The same thing is happening now. Doesn't matter who it is, everyone wants to see the other guy close ... until he starts pitching a mess out there. Matty got the job done, regardless of how sloppy he was. I'll take that every night, even with a BS every now and then.

By the way, the other forum has become a ghost town. There were some pretty good posters last year who made some compelling arguments and had great discussions and I can only assume they are on this board now.

The closers role.

The only role in the world where you can pitch like sh*t, and other people still consider that you "got the job done."

"Pitch to the situation?"

What...is he putting runners on, on purpose?

Seriously, how do you even defend this?

I'm sure if uberschnell (who knows Lindy) asked Matt Lindstrom how he thought he pitched today...he wouldn't be happy. There's no such thing as "pitching to the situation."

If Hanley Ramirez makes an error on Jeter's play, it's no longer "he pitched to the situation," it's "f*** Lindstrom, he blew a 3 run lead today." That's why a blown save is also overrated. It happened to Gregg last year at least 3 times, and it was Gregg who received blame.

There's no such thing as "pitching to the situation." Lindstrom just got pretty lucky to have a 3 run lead to "save" today.

great comeback win but im glad i wasnt there to see lindstroms heart attack. really annoying that all 5 yankee runs were with two outs...those will kill you everytime and cannot happen.

solid series win and taking advantage of the phillies losing streak.

You'll take 2 runs every night?

I think you missed my point. It's ok.

I think you made a bad point.

You said you'll take a save, no matter how many runs he gives up.

Yeah, so will I. Because we winned.

But that's not a good defense of him staying in the closer's role. He doesn't have a magical ability to pitch to the situation. If he did, he would never give up any runs because then he would just pitch well every time. He happened to have a 3 run lead tonight and so when he gave up those two runs, it's no big deal. But it is because eventually it's going to catch up.

By saying "I'll take it" you are trying to chase a percentage that not only can you not catch, it doesn't even exist.

Your point is that you'd take the save every night. That's fine and dandy considering a save = Marlins Win.

That still doesn't mean Lindstrom did his job.

That would be like crediting the hitters last night when it was, basically, Josh Johnson who won us the game. Or crediting Josh Johnson for "getting the job done" after giving up 6 runs in Washington earlier this year just b/c the team won.

Team performance & individual performance = 2 very different things.

I, honestly, don't know why some are putting the 2 together in this thread, but whatever.

I'm not even against keeping him in the closer's role, because, frankly he's not good enough to fill a Calero type role. But to say he's been "good" in the closer's role is just unfounded.

lindstrom makes me nervous..lol, but still nice to see us win! 3 out!!! come on marlins oriles sweep next! we g2 get hot at home!

Exactly. Him in an every day MRP role would cost us more games than he is costing us now.

Just got back from the game, Had an awesome time!! Yankees fans need to learn to shut up when you lose a game and a series and not answer everything with "we've got 26 rings".Great to see a quality start from volstad, also clutch home runs from hanley and cody and a clutch hit from jorge.and a clutch win for the marlins 2 days in a row with everyone else in the divison losing. Lets Go Marlins.

Ha! They are so annoying. I went on Friday and there was this one guy who had a seat right above the Yanks dugout who literally stood up each time one of our pitchers threw strikes and he tried arguing balls to the ump. EACH AND EVERY TIME. Amazing. I think I like the Mets fans better. It pains me to say that.

I also love how when it they make it a 1 run game with one out left they act like they have already won the game. Shut up because we still have the lead and only need one out!! but no they are yankees fans they dont have any common sense

As if we don't pull out the "two rings in 10 years" thing all of the time?

What a godsend coghlan is

35-36... only 3 games back. We've weathered some storms and we're still right in it. If Nolasco settles in and we move Bonafacio out of the number two spot we have the pieces to make the run.

Nice to see Philly start losing... now we need to take it to baltimore like we should and we will be right there at the halfway point! Good stuff

I swear that there were 20 Yankees fans to each Marlins fan in my section (448). I found that the best way to shut them up with the whole "26 rings" crap is to yell 2-0-0-3 and point out that they have NO rings when they matched up against us in the Series, we, on the other hand, have one.

It also helped to point out they have NO rings since 2000 and have spent close to 2 billion (yes, billion) in salaries since their last series win.

I'm a Yankee fan first, Marlins fan second and I actually agree lol. The fans I encountered at today's game reminded me a bit more like Mets/Jets fans rather then true Yankee fans. No respect, just loud and obnoxious. One was chanting at Hanley "Future Yankee!!!" and I just laughed.

Can someone tell me what the long holdup was between when Coghlan got subbed (and the one strike on Jeter) in the 8th? First De Aza came out, then ran back in for Hermida. It looked like something was going on in the stands, but with everybody standing up couldn't quite tell what was going on.

Before all the hating on Lindstrom comes on the post, to whoever reads this and wants to hate, F*** you, he got the job done. Yeah it was scary, but it's the Yankees for crying out loud. They have hitters who can hit realize that. Marlins win that's all that matters.

Calm down, dude. I've been defending Lindstrom for a while, and even I was dissapointed.

The cowbells last night really helped along with the remember 2003 chant.

Apparently, De Aza came out as a defensive replacement for Coghlan. He'd pinch hit in the bottom half of the 7th inning, and Fredi wanted him to stay in and play the field, then put the pitcher in Coghlan's batting spot. However, Nunez already threw one pitch before De Aza came out to replace Coghlan. So, Girardi argued (successfully) that De Aza couldn't come back into the game, since a pitch had already been thrown and De Aza wasn't out in the field. The umps agreed, and forced Fredi to use another bench player.

went to all 3 yankee games AWESOME!!! great game that final inning i shitted myself though im proud of my fish right now

Two things i enjoy at the three games, one, we won the series, second to sit at games with over 35,000 people in the stand, great to see.

Thanks, I guess that's what you miss by actually being at the game lol (unless you listen to the radio broadcast). Same thing happened with CC's injury and I didn't find out what really happened till i was in the car going home.

I like Jeter's quote haha: ?I still don?t know what happened,? Jeter said. ?I play in the American League for a reason.?
