June 22, 200917 yr Now, I've never been a fan of Carroll the hitter, but it's worth mentioning he's hitting .286/.340/.429. Now then, the sample size is ridiculously small, to the point that he was hitting over .300 at one point in today's game. Really it's all been in his last 16 AB, before that he was hitting .212/.278/.242, and, as Bonifacio has proven, anyone can have a hot streak. But I thought it was worth mentioning how well he's been hitting, and maybe more importantly, how much more comfortable he looks in the box. Maybe he's figured something out? I don't know and won't hold my breath, but it's definitely worth watching.
June 22, 200917 yr I was originally against it when I saw what Fredi was doing but I like the Hermida/BC platoon. If we're going to get a very low .700 OPS out of a guy, might aswell use the guy with elite defense.
June 22, 200917 yr Carroll needs to be in RF. Hermida in LF. and then do the options they have with Chris and Emilio.
June 22, 200917 yr He's been very good this month in limited opportunities, but yes, its probably just a fluke.
June 22, 200917 yr might as well use the guy with elite defense. Good example of that is his catch a foot off the ground of the sinking liner early in the game. Probably would have been attempted and botched by Hermida, rolled the the wall and resulted in a triple and a run. Carroll's talents at the plate seem to be underrated judging by the massive improvement he's made since he got the opportunity to get more than the odd PH at-bat and a start every week or two. With more playing time maybe he'll show enough to be more than a defensive replacement and PH.

He's really not getting much more PT than he has in his ML career. And even with these good 16 AB he still has a career .207/.261/.288 line. Remember all you Marlin fans, when you think of sample sizes, think of Emilio Bonifacio.
June 22, 200917 yr Brett hit 22 homers in 118 minor league games in 2007. I know that it was the PCL, but still, he slugged .597 and even with some serious league adjustment that still isn't bad. And that is somewhat of an aberration as the rest of his minor league career is much less impressive, but even in his bad years in the minors he still showed some nice pop. His major league career up to this year is really irrelevant in evaluation him because his playing time was incredibly sporadic and his at-bats even more so. In fact, in 2008 he had more games played (26) than at bats (17). Brett certainly needed some adjustment time and its unfortunate that he didn't get a chance to do so before now. Nobody should jump the gun and say he is gonna be an allstar or that he is going to produce even close to the level of Hermida. But Carroll's track record (unlike Bonifacio's) convinces me that he can contribute a little offensively and that he may be capable of sustaining production not far from where he is now. And that, combined with his outstanding defense, makes him the 4th-5th outfielder we have really needed.

That 07 featured a .348/.400/.621 line at home and a .258/.320/.533 line on the road, despite a lower LD% at home. Maybe he can be a .750 guy against LHP, but more than that is probably asking too much.

Either way, that .533 slugging percentage doesn't look bad at all. Though obviously inflated, there's nothing there that says Carroll can't easily a respectable line for this season and slug in the ballpark of .420, which he is doing now, or go even higher.
June 22, 200917 yr if he can become what franklin gutierrez has ben, that's damn good 4th OFer and borderline average OFer/above average CFer depending on how just large of an impact defense has. Gutierrez has a little less pop and a less better contact, and has better range and worse arm, but same basic low avg/bad obp/ok slg with elite defense role. I don't think asking BC to put up something like .240/.300/.400 is asking for too much Gutierrez has been worth roughly 5.3 wins over replacement in his career, and his career is worth about 2 seasons, so that's about 2-3 wins over replacement a season. With the pipeline we have in our OF he's really not looking at being a starter on our team but he can certainly become a good 4th OFer. The biggest problem being that we'd really need some offense on our bench if two spots are given to Bonifacio (calling card IF defense and speed) and Carroll (calling card OF defense).
June 22, 200917 yr don't go crazy now Who went crazy? My conclusion was: "With more playing time MAYBE he'll show enough to be more than a defensive replacement and PH." [emphasis added] I think the guy has some upside. We'll see. It's certainly not worth an argument with you or anyone else. He'll do whatever he'll do and so be it. I hope he gets a chance to show us what he's got.

With more playing time maybe he'll show enough to be more than a defensive replacement and PH. Guess TV made that look harder than it actually was. It wasn't very far from where he was positioned, pretty close to directly in front of him, and it was easily read off the bat. Kinda surprised me he went into a slide to get it, but it did give him a better shot at blocking it and keeping it in front of him, just in case. Which, BTW, had it got by him it wouldn't have "rolled to the wall and resulted in a triple and a run scored." Cody was in position to back him up, as is his job. But I will agree that Brett's defense is superior to Jeremy's.
June 22, 200917 yr What I think could be a possible factor is that for most of the time he sucked when at the plate, he was effectively the 25th guy on the roster and the most obvious candidate to be sent back to AAA when players returned from injury etc - now he has been up for a prolonged period of time and with De Aza on the roster, Carroll has a little more certainty about his roster spot as ADA is more likely to be demoted in such situations. This translates into not trying to do too much with the bat and feeling more relaxed at the plate and while it is a small sample size, the results have been more encouraging.

Especially since te guy a hone probably saw it more than once from multiple angles?

June 22, 200917 yr I'd 100% rather have Carroll in the lineup than Bonifacio at all times. He can't be any worse at the plate, and he's amazing defensively. I assume Coglhan is at least decent at 3B, so just by getting rid of Bonifacio the team will be much better. Plus then you can put Hermida in LF where he has been better...helps all around.
June 22, 200917 yr I would like to see De Aza to AAA and Gaby to ML. Then, you have 2 righties - Gaby and Carroll - and 2 lefties - Coghlan and Hermida- and Bonifacio to man LF, RF, and 3B. Against LHP, I have an automatic Gaby at 3B, Carroll in RF, and let Freddi go with his gut in LF. Against RHP, Coghlan and Hermida always crack the lineup, and then Freddi has discretion with the 3rd choice (which would also affect fielding positions, obviously).
June 24, 200916 yr He has been absolutely great in the field and he has looked pretty good at the plate lately. They have been giving him some solid ABs against lefties and I think its time to give him the opprtunity to become an almost everyday player. Not to mention Hermida is a scrrrrrub

June 24, 200916 yr Hermida is nothing more than a slightly below average MLB outfielder........Time for some of you to accept it.
