I may be vilified for this but despite the numbers...this was bound to happen. I truly hope this doesnt come as a shock to y'all but Phelps and Bump are garbage. Sure they've performed well thus far but do you feel comfortable every time that door opens and either walks out...I'm certainly not. I don't even feel comfortable with Perisho either. Wayne is building my trust. This is not a playoff caliber bullpen. What kind deals can we do and do you think we will make any?

This may be an overreaction to tonight but i'm sick and tired of these guys. They're gettin hit around.

Every team's bullpen gets hit once and a while. And it took 18 games for us to get hit hard. I consider us lucky.

Phelps I think would be the first one to go down when AJ comes back even though he is a lefty. He has given up a ton of hits in very few innings so far this year.

Wait until we get Spooney and AJ back.

AJ will probably send Phelps to AAA and Oliver to the bullpen

And if Spooney comes back, it'll probably send Bump to AAA.

IF....Spoon isnt a guarantee this season. Would be nice but I wouldnt hold your breath.

Hopefully he'll pitch a little though.

Be fair, Nate Bump got knocked around tonight. Phelps made one mistake. Wayne did well again. Benitez has been solid all year thus far. Perisho has been lights out most of the time. Fox is good when not overused.

It's not a bad pen.

You're joking, right? Maybe you want Rheal Cormier or Roberto Hernandez?

Bump has good stuff against all kinds of hitters but lacks control, much like Chad Fox. He's a good weapon to have in the bullpen. But it matters how you use him! He shouldn't have been brought in today after throwing 50 pitches (90, if you count pickoffs and bullpen throwing) just two days prior.

Phelps too is a quality reliever we can use. But it depends on how we use him. He's good against lefties, induces a lot of groundballs and throws a lot of strikes. Just the type of guy you want in the mop-up role giving you 3 innings on 30 pitches, when he's not brought in for the lefty vs. lefty matchup.

Sorry, but the 7th was on McKeon's bullpen management today. And I hold him to accountable for benching Conine and Choi when it was not necessary. I don't care about Cordero's double. Cordero and Nunez are role players on this club and shouldn't be pushing for starting roles. Especially not at expense of Conine and Choi who were playing well recently. Cordero's place on the team is to take advantage of lefty/right matchups and to give Choi a rest every now and then. Not a two day rest when a righty is on the mound! It also made no sense to rest a player before we went to Coors. Any amount of rest a starter can get by resting this evening is matched by the late flight cross-country and adapting to the altitude change.

if the bullpen gets knocked around once ever 16 games or so...

Ill take it

jeez, you guys are spoiled

Most of you guys think we will and should win every game. We won't. Bump threw 50 pitches on Thursday, going over 3 innings which is more than he's thrown at one time since last June when he was called up. He came in relief on Saturday night. Remember he has always been a starter. Benitez has been used non stop. I put a lot of the blame on McKeon. While he's a funny guy and a good manager, I think he should let Rosenthal help make more of the decisions of who and when to bring someone in. Of Course, maybe it is Rosenthal making these decisions.

It's also not easy. If it was, we'd all be MLB pitchers!

I think bullpen has been pretty good so far, and overall it's not a bad pen. It was tough loss, and while I'm generally satisfied with the pen for now, I can't see Phelps or Bump or even Perisho consitently pitching good into June-July, etc. So, a deal will need to be done to aquire a more established arm or two down the road. Just look at any team's bullpen at the beginning of the season, and then take a look at their bullpen at the end. Things change, and I just can't see some of the guys on our pen performing consistently.

LOLOL @ This Thread...

Ok guys, in case you didn't read my post before. We came into this game witht he BEST Pen statistics of any team in the league, in fact we still have the best Pen "Statistically". What the hell do you guys want??? I mean a Pen is gonna allow runs every once in a while. They are not perfect but they certainly don't deserved to be talked about like this with the way they have pitched this year. It's ONE game, give it a rest and let's see where we are at the all-star break. Even with these losses tot he Braves we still have a 2 game lead in the NL East and are still tied for the best record in the MLB. I for one will take it!

yup, I agree too.

Wayne (gasp!) Fox and Benitez look solid, but we still could use some help...

Actually I was hoping Jack would put Fox in when Bump hit trouble in the 7th. I'd rather have seen Fox in there trying to K Franco or Drew...

Why is our player referred to on the board as OMGNUNEZ? Anyone care to shed some light?

Thanks.

Guys,

I don't want anyone to get me wrong, I am rooting for Nate Bump and everyone we put out there. I don't expect a 0.00 ERA. It is the way Nate Bump gets into trouble that bothers me. Nate has overpowering stuff but is hittable. When the other guys get a hit or two against him he then tries to get too fancy/gets scared and throws fewer strikes which as we know leads to one of two things....walks or grooving pitches on a 2-0, 3-1 count.

I guess I'd like better at our 5-6 spots in the pen. I'm guilty.

Until that time, Go Nate!!

I think we could help our pen by letting Justin Wayne pitch more often, for starters.

We'll make a move before the deadline, but we're still getting quality work from our pen, I see no reason to worry about it right now. Stuff like last night is bound to happen several times over the course of a 162 game schedule.

I dont think that there is any need to worry at all. The bullpen was supposed to be the teams biggest question mark and was supposed to be the reason that we dont make the playoffs, but right now they are doing nothing but help us make the playoffs. So just because they got knocked around one game, isnt a reason to start worrying.

Keep your eye on Ben Howard - he may be in our bullpen before the season is over. Also, Wayne has put together some nice outings.

I still think Bump and Phelps are solid enough to keep their jobs, Phelps is our only lefty out of the pen. I am not sure what happened to Tejera Bump is nothing great and can be replaced, but I do like him. These guys just didnt throw strikes last night.
