April 28, 200422 yr i don't think that the "Miami Marlins" will happen. it was a transparent attempt to lure the city into allocating us some free land in a nice area of downtown Miami. they did not really come through with their end of the deal, so i doubt there will be any motivation to change the name. No, it definitely will happen. That is part of the contract. If the County and City put money into it then the name must change. It was part of the deal from the beginning whether the ballpark was in Downtown Miami or somewhere else in the county. The name change is a done deal. whoops - my bad. go Miami Marlins! :cool
April 28, 200422 yr I don't know why you call miami a sh** city. Do we have a shi** goverment? yes. But the city has a lot to offer and a lot of cultural diversity which I love. Judge the City by the people living in it, and not by the government. Amen!
April 28, 200422 yr Marlino, I'll still be a big fan, but the space from my favorite team (Marlins) have closed to my other secondary favorite teams (DRays, Boston, etc.) has closed. orisha, Kiss my ass, b***h! David, I'm happy for you and others. The thing is a name means a lot to people that don't identify with that area. Miami means a lot less to me than Boston from my family even though I grew up in Tallahassee. Most people on this site won't realize what a name means to some people removed from the area that can't go to all the games but love a team anyway. That's life, though. FreshFish, I never broke it down that way. I've said for a while I hoped the Marlins stayed in FL, but that doesn't mean I have to be happy that the s***ty city of Miami forcing Marlins's ownership to truly become a regional team at the possible expense of many fans above South Florida. The money I spend on merchandise is the same as S. FL. fans. Hell, even the team owner has no connection to freakin' Miami! Imagine how fans since day 1 of this franchise that didn't support the city of Miami feel!!! My God, Atlanta is closer to most north FL residents than Miami. So don't sit here and rip us for taking in a "new" franchise in the early 90s and feeling betrayed for them now becoming just South Florida's team. Tampa looks a lot better to many Central and North Florida fans that have been Marlins fans since day 1. Rip those Marlins fans in this situation all you want. I'll always be a Marlins fan wearing my inaugural shirt and my Beckett jersey, but Tampa will soon be on the same level as the Marlins to me. Most people in this country don't live in actual pro sports towns. I guess we should just not watch pro sports because we don't want to live in pro sports towns. you have the right to root for whatever team that fit your preferences. I don't know why you call miami a sh** city. Do we have a shi** goverment? yes. But the city has a lot to offer and a lot of cultural diversity which I love. Judge the City by the people living in it, and not by the government. I'll take back some of what I said. I don't like the area of most South FL cities. It is nothing personal. I used to say the farthest south I'd go is Tampa, but I may have a job in Sarasota I can't pass up in the next couple of months. Even Sarasota is testing my own like for an area. It has nothing to do with the people down there, just what I like. I hate palm trees and pink houses. I prefer trees with "real leaves" (in my mind) and brick houses. No offense S.FL. people, but it is what I prefer. I have gotten great job offers in Ft. Laud., but it isn't my type of place. That doesn't mean I like the Marlins any less IMO. But, whatever. I didn't mean to get in a fight with other Marlin fans. I have always loved the franchise, but the "Miami Marlins" don't appeal to me like the "Florida Marlins" even if many posters on this site can't understand how non-South FL. residents feel about this issue.

You don't identify with either so what do you care, right? Where as before at least you could identify with the Florida thing because it also did represent where you lived, right? I think I can understand and sympathize with you. Athough I won't sympathize too much because I am a Miamuh guy as you already know. LOL

Most people in this country don't live in actual pro sports towns. I guess we should just not watch pro sports because we don't want to live in pro sports towns. You're being a little optimistic with the number of fans from outside of S FL. I know the Marlins have a good share of fans from upstate (many on this board), but based on my personal travels within the state, you are in the clear minority. Baseball fans from North Florida have generally always been Atlanta Braves fans, and always will be. If a fan totally or partially gives up allegiance to a team because of a name change, then you wonder how much of a "fan" they were from the start. I'm sorry the possible name change will alienate you, but you're calling Miami a sh***y city isn't going to win you any sympathy or class points. Maybe I am, but maybe I'm not. I have a feeling most of the S. FL posters on this board have no idea how many to the north in this state feel. Are there a lot of Braves fans here? Sure, I was until they traded Deion/Sid Bream/etc. and pissed me off. I know a lot of them. But that is because they built up trust over the years. Once the Marlins change from FL to MI, I bet you a lot of neutral fans in Central and North Florida become split to Tampa and Miami, and I have no doubt most non-S. FL fans will choose Tampa. That is a lot of merchandise money, IMO. THat is a bigger loss than most people realize. Tampa has a TON of young offensive talent and is closer to contending than anyone on this board will realize. JMHO. Like I said, no offense to South Florida people. If you love that area, congrats. It is all up to personal choice. I'll take the brunt of rips for non-S. FL. Marlins, though. :hat

Although the Las Vegas Marlins challenge that opinion. My first choice was always for them to remain in South Florida. I just wanted them as "Florida's team" and not "Miami's team." That is all. It is a small point to most Marlins fans, but it is a big thing to me. Like I said, I hate the Dolphiins more than I ever will the Canes. It has nothing to do with FSU's rivals. I promise... P.S. I don't like the Heat or the Magic. I don't know what that makes me considering FL basketball and the NBA. :lol
April 28, 200422 yr changing alliances with a team because they change their name is stupid. thinking that having the team named the florida marlins will bring in more fans is also stupid, because then everyone would be changing their names to bring in more fans. you'd see the michigan tigers, georgia braves, pennsylvania pirates, missouri royals. besides the miami marlins makes it sound more like a baseball team. you are either a fan of the team or not. you think people in new hampshire care that the boston red sox are called the boston red sox.

"you think people in new hampshire care that the boston red sox are called the boston red sox." You're describing a pro sports area, not a college sports area. The state of FL will ALWAYS revolve around FSU/UF/UM, not the Dolpins/Marlins/etc. The Southeast doesn't give a crap about pro sports like it does college sports and it never will. At least not north of South Florida, anyway. :mischief There is a reason Atlanta and Miami are joked about being the worst sports towns in America. :thumbdown

Lets not be too harsh on him. There are many fans that like their teams because they do represent where they live. For example, I could never like some Tampa Bay team because quite simply I have nothing to do with that city. NirvanaNole could at least like the Florida Marlins because in his mind it also represented where he lived. Now being changed to the Miami name will be like the fish moving to some other state to him. For that matter, another planet. That is what I think he is going through.
April 28, 200422 yr Well, I have to credit Samson and Loria for going this far. If they managed to get something out of the state legislature, with three days to go, then it'll be nothing less than a major accomplishment. They would have overcome opposition from King, Huizenga, the House speaker.... How would the South Florida delegation try to push through the issue, or are they leaving to Samson to do the work himself?

Before I get into anything else to show you the way, just look at all the New York City teams. If you think pure location of a stadium changes "percieved views" and "built up trust," you're insane. The Mets would be the top NY team if it came down to money living within that area. But, whatever. I'm glad the Marlins will remain in FL, but I'm unhappy if they become the "Miami Marlins." If people don't like me saying that, whatever man. I've probably bought as much merchandise and have as many games on tape as 95% of you on this site. So I'm not worried about my allegience being ripped at. :hat
April 28, 200422 yr posted this afternoon on herald.com: City Commissioner: deal for Marlins stadium close Miami Commissioner Joe Sanchez, who represents the district where the Orange Bowl sits, said City Manager Joe Arriola reached a working deal with the Marlins Tuesday night to finance a new stadium for the team at the Orange Bowl site. He said there is gap of funding and Marlins President David Samson is flying to Tallahasse today in a last ditch effort to get some state funding for the deal. The city told the Marlins that they would build a large parking garage in the Orange Bowl area for the team, and also said that they would use money freed up from the looming sale of the Miami Arena to finance the baseball stadium. The team and the city have been negotiating for months, but the talks picked up steam in the last couple of weeks, after the Marlins decided that they wanted a stadium in the Orange Bowl area. Sanchez said that there are still hurdles to overcome. ''There are a lot of other factors that have to fall into place to make this deal doable,'' Sanchez said.
April 28, 200422 yr i need a tape of opening day 93 I have it. If I end up near yoru town and you can hook up another VHS or DVD to record my VHS, I'll let you. Watching those green/acqua hats on EPSN with Charlie pitching still cracks me up! Hell, Conine that young is scary!!!! :o
April 28, 200422 yr I'm from central florida and I would hate to see the marlins change their name to the Miami Marlins also, but that doesn't mean I'd stop rooting for them.
April 28, 200422 yr Well, I won't even bring up the Miami Marlins vs DC Marlins argument. I'll just ask you this: Who has put up money for the stadium? I don't see Broward jumping up to give the team money, nothing from Palm Beach either. Miami is giving money to the stadium, and if they want the Marlins to be the Miami Marlins then so be it. That was the way it was originally supposed to be anyways. Has Florida put up any money? No, King and the Legislature turned them down. So you know what, screw them.

April 28, 200422 yr Well if that was the case than maybe Florida should have put up instead of shutting up.
April 28, 200422 yr We call them the Marlins...at home they wear Marlins on the front. Who cares is FLA or MIA is on the scorebox or if Miami is on the front on the road? As long as the Marlins stay in Florida and I can watch them, I shall be happy.
April 28, 200422 yr i need a tape of opening day 93 Watching those green/acqua hats on EPSN you mean teal?
April 28, 200422 yr Well if that was the case than maybe Florida should have put up instead of shutting up. Quit crying Nole fan. No one cares if you're not going to buy any more aqua-green shirts anymore. Its not like they're losing ticket sales or anything. Root for the Braves or TB, but if you're going to change teams over a name, who cares?
