May 1, 200422 yr To blame Dontrelle Willis for this loss (although he was certainly played a big part) and no on else is uninformed at best. Choi's foul ball error was what opened the floodgates. It was compounded by Cabs inability to handle an in the field of play foul on the next pitch. The batter then reached. So two chances to get the first guy out were not Willis' fault. My favorite Wil Cordero image was after he mishandled what should have been the second out of the inning but instead turned into the grand slam. There's Wil looking at his glove, inspecting it thoroughly as if somehow the glove had failed him (and his teammates) rather than himself. (If I say Nunez would have caught that I'm sure it will lead to a firestorm of criticism but I base it on three things, he's faster than Cordero, he's taller than Cordero and he always, maniacally catches the ball with two hands.) In any event simply catching the ball (Cordero) would have been out two, and a single run scored. I'd the be the last one to say Cordero or Choi lost the game for us. Willis just had nothing tonight. But their bad defensive play certainly compounded the situation. I can still see Cordero inspecting his glove. He looked like he belonged on the line at a Fruit of the Loom factory.
May 1, 200422 yr IMO Wil Cordero should not have been playing LF. He's an average OF at best. Abe Nunez should have been out there playing LF. Mistake happen yes, but that one cost us the game.
May 1, 200422 yr cordero totally screwed up, but i think jack learned has learned from that now. as long as abe is on our team, i'm thinking he'll be the go-to backup OF. not only did wil bumble that catch and a second one that fell between him and sea bass (costing another run or 2), i noticed he had trouble getting his glove on 2 routine bouncing liners. they hit his glove and fell in front of him, so i don't know if anyone noticed. in any case, it was painfully obvious that his OF defense sucks.

The only reason Wil could have been in the OF is to give him some playing time. I agree it would be unfair to say he cost us the game....because we certainly had chances to win it later on. It was a team loss as several elements combined added up to the 13 runs. That being said, I don't mind calling them like I see them. Wil's OF performance was dismal at best. A good performance by our LF'er may have resulted in a W for us. So you can't excuse Wil either. Nunez is my pick for back up OFer. His defense is much better than Cordero's, as is his hitting.
May 1, 200422 yr It kills me inside when I think about how Nunez could have prevented that Grand slam! But i know Cordero didn't do it on purpose.. mistakes happen to everybody... he'll just learn from it next time.... :confused
May 1, 200422 yr Most of you people need to shut up and realize that mistakes happen and that we can't win every game... Move on, doods... Go Pavz...
May 1, 200422 yr No matter- poor Dontrelle can't pitch in his hometown without caving in- hes actually from oakland
May 1, 200422 yr and if Nunez was out and there and say he trips, you guys all wish for Cordero whatever, thank God the game is in and hour and a half
