May 16, 200422 yr I'm chiming in late on this thread but here are my takes on everything discussed: Choi needs to play to get out of this slump...If he keeps playing here, I'm fine with it...I guess, but he can't bat 5th anymore, he just can't. He needs to bat 7th, with Conine 5th and the catcher (Castro preferrably, but Red if necessary) 6th. I think honestly Castillo is more of a problem right now, we need to sit him for a few days, let Easley play, and get Castillo's pinky healed. Also, Cabrera, in my estimation, is on the market. Remember, Livan and Vidro have re-upped with the 'Spos, and for a team who couldn't afford to keep the premier player in baseball last off-season to then resign a very very good but not spectacular SS in addition to a very good but overrated second baseman and a work horse pitcher makes no sense to me. IMO, they overpaid for Vidro, and wasted money on Livan (he's good, but not the top of rotation starter that you build a staff around; they could have used the money on position players in the offseason more effectively than what they gave Livan), they don't have an endless pit, Cabrera is either going to sign the most backloaded deal in history, or he's on the market. Most importantly, I'm not scoreboard watching at this point...it's still May. We've got a massive amount of games coming up at home, this is when we (hopefully) right all that's wrong. And look at our June/interleague schedule, it's much lighter than the Phillies and Braves, so by the all-star break, we should be cruising if we're a serious contendor...
May 16, 200422 yr I think that we should site Choi. He isnt doing so good at the plate. And the problem is that the way he is getting out is via the strike out a lot of times. And he isnt even giving the other team a chance to mess up and make an error to let him on base...he needs to start getting more hits and stop looking for a home run so much...
May 16, 200422 yr You hit it right on the nail. Start Conine at 1st and move Nunez to LF. Then work on a trade to get Cabrera and/or Kendall Cabrera for Gonzalez and Nunez How can the Expos not like that? They get cheap talent that they can afford to keep and Nunez gets his starting role like he has wanted.... This is the perfect trade O Cab's defense is pretty good, right?
May 16, 200422 yr Of Course Choi is gonna be struggling. He never has no playing time. Cordero has been starting alot more. He needs to start in a daily basis. Dont blame Choi for our Offensive struggles.

It's not because of his and/or Cordero's performance.

And I say that Choi is doing so bad that we shouldnt even out him in against right handers.
May 16, 200422 yr Author Reading everybody views on Choi, I feel my point didn't get through. I'm not suggesting Choi sit or be sent down for the benefit of the team so much, but more for himself. Choi is very simliar to Castillo when he first came up very hard on himself. IMO I felt Choi could be effected long term with this slump...doubt is growing in his head. Its not so much for the team, but for Choi as a player. The team, the organization has to come to realization of which player or players do you go with and let them grow out of this growing pains. Castro? Gonzo? Choi? too many players are be develop at onetime, which in turn is killing our offense. strikezones, learning pitchers, learning how to make adjustment..etc. Not everybody can come up and be Miggy. This questions I believe will be answer soon, if I had to bet the top candidates are Gonzo and Castro :plain
May 16, 200422 yr Gonzo is not a player in "development". Castro and Choi are. The Fish have given him every opportunity. I was 100% against a Gonzo/Nomar trade when it was earlier suggested but I've come around. Right now, given that Nomar returns healthy, I would make that trade in a heartbeat knowing full well we could not sign Nomar in 2005. As for finding a permanent replacement I'd cross that bridge next season.
May 16, 200422 yr I disagree strongly with moving him down in the order. He's not going to improve being pitched around to get to Ramon Castro and Alex Gonzalez. And no way those two could drive him when he draws a walk. They can barely get themselves to first. I'd like to see him bat between Lowell and Cabrera. That would force pitchers to throw more meatballs to Choi. It would also give Lowell more chances at lefthanders and give Cabrera someone to knock in.
May 16, 200422 yr Oliver pitched decently Shocker! oliver did not pitch decently. he only lasted 4 1/3 innings and gave up 3 earned runs on 4 hits and 2 walks. thats another terrible outing for a starter. i suppose by DO standards, its above average though.

I still cant believe you were ever against a Nomar for Gonzo deal (of course, there would be more money involved and likely Pavs too).
May 16, 200422 yr Choi does not have self doubt. You dont get this far and all of sudden start doubting yourself. Not when you have 9 home runs either. Choi is struggling because he may be pressing too hard, sure. But you dont send him down. You limit or curtail his responsibilities some. Dont make him feel pressured to drive in runs are get hits. His OBP is respectable, .345. Not bad although he is hitting .224. I think he will come around. He hasnt struck out too much (16K in 98ABs) which means he is making contact. When that happens and you arent getting fooled, you arent lacking confidence. You are lacking results. I think you are totally wrong about Choi, Edcanes. You play him - and play him a lot.

If we're talking about trading AGon for a rent-a-player, in this case Nomar, I could find value in that.
May 17, 200422 yr I don't think lineup order is really going to change much. Choi isn't going to hit for average and we knew this when we traded for him. He gets on base with walks and hits for power when he does hit. Don't panic.
May 19, 200422 yr Author Admin Sutton is NOT a prospect, but you can't ignore what he's doing down on the farm either. Thank you! Will was placed on the DL and Sutton was called up
May 20, 200422 yr Choi just hit an Inside the Park Homerun! Mind retracking your statements . In all seriousness, yes he is struggling and he needs to hit the ball more, but I do not see anyone on this roster who is a better overall 1B than him, so we have to leave him in.
May 20, 200422 yr Forget the fact that it produced our only two runs thus far for the night, that ball by Choi was SMOKED. Plus, he is still drawing walks.
May 20, 200422 yr screw the walks we need doubles and hr's. a walk is not going to spark a dead offense.
