What's up with Josh & AJ? I was listening to both QAM and 1400thefan this morning...both mentioned -

1. that Josh was complaining about our training staff and having to go on the DL for two weeks.

2. AJ was whining about Beinfest & Samson not watching him rehab and having to pitch in NY on Thursday instead of pitching at PPS on Wednesday?

Anyone else hear about this? If true - someone needs to have a conversation with these two - while their issues might have some validity - they both need a lesson in handling things internally and not speaking through the media (especially AJ).

:confused

Here's the Palm Beach Post article on AJ.... with some notes on Beckett too.

I'll just chalk this up to AJ's frustration from having to wait, he's definitely chomping at the bit. But it seems Josh & AJ are pretty upset with Sean Cunningham the Marlins trainer.

Pitching a Fit

MIAMI GARDENS -- Add A.J. Burnett to the list of disgruntled Florida Marlins starters.

Burnett, upset because he is not starting Wednesday at home in his return from Tommy John surgery, lashed out at Marlins General Manager Admin Beinfest and President David Samson.

"Just because I'm not throwing 97 to 100 (mph), striking anybody out, Admin and Dave are wondering what's wrong,'' Burnett said, referring to his final rehab start Friday for Class AAA Albuquerque, in which he allowed four runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings.

"They haven't come down and watched one bullpen. They haven't come down and watched one simulated game. They haven't come down and seen one rehab start. So they haven't any idea whether I'm ready or not.''

Beinfest, who watched Burnett pitch a simulated game, said the decision when to pitch Burnett was made by manager Jack McKeon, which McKeon confirmed.

"I don't tell people when they're going to pitch,'' Beinfest said.

Burnett's outburst came one day after ace Josh Beckett ripped into the training staff for the team's decision to place the right-hander on the disabled list. Beckett continued his assault Monday.

"I'm still (ticked) off,'' said Beckett, who developed a blister on his right middle finger Sunday. "I still have to come to the field for two weeks knowing I have nothing to do because we have a jackass trainer.''

Although Beckett is speaking of trainer Sean Cunningham, the decision to place him on the disabled list was made by the organization.

Cunningham did not comment.

Said one veteran, jokingly, "It's amazing we won the World Series''

Burnett is scheduled to face the Mets Thursday in New York, his first appearance since undergoing surgery in April 2003. Burnett preferred to start at home against the Reds. He was clear his beef was not with McKeon nor pitching coach Wayne Rosenthal.

"I think Rosey and Skip said, 'This guy's been working hard and he's ready.' Admin and David haven't seen one pitch since I got hurt.

"I don't even think they know what the hell they want to do.'

Said McKeon: "He thinks there's coercion. I'm the boss. After considering all the facts we decided on Thursday.''

The Marlins believe Burnett might overthrow if he were pitching at home. Also, the Mets' lineup is filled with right-handers. The Reds field a predominantly left-handed lineup against righties.

"We'll go with that so the next time I face a left-handed team I can be skipped in the rotation,'' Burnett said, facetiously.

Burnett also was upset because pitching one more rehab start was an option. When Beinfest was asked whether he preferred Burnett start one more minor-league game, he said: "I think he's pitching this week. Collectively the decision was made to activate him. That's it. He's pitching.''

Burnett, who made three rehab starts, will pitch on six days' rest in his first three starts. His first appearance at home will be June 15 against the White Sox.

Beckett remained frustrated Monday perhaps because the blister does not appear as serious as the blisters that forced him to the disabled list three times in 2002.

"This is not a blood blister, it's totally different,'' Beckett said. "This is like skin that had gotten loose and totally ripped off. Those (blood blisters) are a helluva lot more painful than this one is.''

Beckett had a minor bout with the blister last season, but it did not pop and did not require he miss any time. The first sign of trouble this season was during his previous start in Cincinnati. But the finger did not bother him Sunday until two outs in the third inning, popping on a fastball to the Mets' Karim Garcia.

Beckett will continue to treat the blister with the same cream that he has used the last two years.

"We did it all year last year and it didn't act up,'' he said. "I'll do the same thing I was doing all last year and the same thing I've been doing all this year.''

AJ did the same thing last year with the front office in the "Torborg/Arnsberg Scandal."

Someone needs to tell both of them that the media isn't the best way...

After reading the article it's tough to get a good read on both. Their comments can be manipulated and made to sound much worse than they were inteneded. It does sounds like they are both just displaying their competitive fire.

As long as they are both okay with Jack & Rosey - all should be fine.

You know what, if they continue, McKeon/Beinfest/Samson will fine them for each outburst. It is club policy for the players not to comment in the media about club policy.

I don't know much about the situation with Josh, but if I was AJ I'd be super pissed, even if the Reds' lineup has more lefties.

McKeon is the manager, until Beckett and Burnett become GM's and Managers, they should shut up and follow directions.

I don't know much about the situation with Josh, but if I was AJ I'd be super pissed, even if the Reds' lineup has more lefties.

Why does AJ have the right to be pissed? One day is not a big difference in a 14 months wait.

I think this is going to be a struggle betwen AJ and Jack. I suppose he will cry more, when he gets pulled from the game after 95-100 pitches regardless of the situation.

Isn't that what AJ did when Torborg and Arnsberg blew out his arm?

Just because someone is on top of you doesn't mean their right. Going to the media might not be the right thing to do, and when the media comes to you you should probably watch what you say, but saying that you have to trust in the people above you 100% of the time is nonesense.

Why does AJ have the right to be pissed? One day is not a big difference in a 14 months wait. The difference in the day isn't the fact that he starts on Thursday instead of Wednesday.....it's that he doesn't start at home. With the kind of support he gets here don't you think he would want to start at home?

I rather have the D-Train face the heavy lefty cinci than the Mets. It is the best scenario for both AJ and Dontrelle. AJ is going to have plenty of opportunities to pitch at home. This is a marathon and we have a lot of baseball left.

Dontrelle has the better record against Cinci. Burnett and Beckett need to grow up because if not, they will not make it as big leaguers.

It's not like Dontrelle is going to face a lefty-heavy lineup as it is. He has all the same chance of getting his brains bashed in that AJ does.

yes he will.

casey will start.

griffey will start.

dunn will start.

thats 3 big letty bats there.

Because Dunn started yesterday against Tommy Phelps, the dominant lefty that he is?

AJ needs to grow up. He better get used to Jack b***hing at him and telliing him who is boss.

Unlike the other starters who Jack tends to be more leniant(sp) with in terms of pitch counts....AJ will most likely be on a very strict pitch count the first month or so.

He doesnt like it? Tough. Every other sane manager and management staff would do the same.

I just hope that AJ doesnt get it through his head that he is out there to blow everyone away. That wont work. I have this fear though....AJ better show up and pitch...not just throw mid 90s heat....or i might have to go kick his ass.

Dontrelle has the better record against Cinci. Burnett and Beckett need to grow up because if not, they will not make it as big leaguers.

burnett has already proved that he can make it

i really hope the veterans (conine, lenny) can get Josh's head screwed on. As for AJ, i just think he's really anxious to get back.

And he'll have at least one fan in the stands on Thursday

I completely understand why AJ isn't starting at home. That is SO much pressure and if he doesn't live up to people's expectations, that would destroy his morale. Let him get his feet wet again. Plus, the chances of me being able to see his first home start again are much better (yay)

Beckett needs to learn some media skills. Calling the trainer a jackass? Namecalling? That's just great. Then again, this guy was voted "Best Reason to Avoid the Marlins Clubhouse" by the broward/palm beach new times thanks to this golden interview: http://www.newtimesbpb.com/issues/2004-05-...stsports47.html

We all knew he was a jerk, but he has to control himself.

I think calling the trainer a "Jackass" in public deserves a fine.He needs to grow up and apologize.

he won't apologize

it's just the type of person he is, you just have to live with it, or trade him, which i don't think any of us want to do.

I thik he can learn to keep his feelings more internally, though

I hate Becketts whole cocky thingy. It's good to have that emotion but he just whines so much it's getting pretty annoying. I don't even know what the hell AJ's problem is. To quote the Tampa Bay Lighting head coach, "He should shut his yap."
