Yahoo! Sports Game Preview

After missing more than a year while recovering from an elbow surgery, A.J. Burnett is struggling to regain his form.

The 27-year-old right-hander looks to bounce back from one of his worst outings as the Florida Marlins host the hard-hitting Chicago White Sox in the opener of a three-game interleague series.

Burnett, who makes just his third start this season after undergoing elbow ligament replacement surgery in April 2003, gave up career worsts of eight runs and 12 hits in just 4 1-3 innings of an 8-1 loss to Cleveland last Wednesday.

``I'm healthy,'' said Burnett, who went 12-9 with a 3.30 ERA in 31 games in 2002. ``My arm feels good. It's time to start putting up the numbers. I know what I can do. These guys know what I can do. It's just a matter of doing it now.''

Marlins manager Jack McKeon agrees that Burnett is on track. `Stuff-wise, he's fine,'' McKeon said. ``Velocity-wise, he's there. It's just his command. This is like spring training for him.''

Burnett takes on the streaking offense of the White Sox in the first-ever matchup between the two teams.

Carlos Lee pushed his career-high hitting streak to 27 games, the longest in the majors, with a first-inning double in Chicago's 10-3 win over Atlanta on Sunday. He finished 3-for-5 and scored a run for the White Sox, who took two of three from the Braves and have won three of their last five games while averaging 9.6 runs in that span.

``We're swinging the bats real well,'' said Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen, who returns to Florida where he helped the Marlins to a championship last year as the third base coach. ``The way we're swinging the bats right now anything can happen any inning.''

Joe Crede homered and had three RBIs, Juan Uribe had a pair of doubles and two RBIs and Frank Thomas added a solo shot -- his 16th of the year -- for the White Sox, who have scored at least 10 runs 12 times this season, the most in the majors.

Florida avoided a weekend sweep to the Detroit Tigers with a 9-2 victory on Sunday and finished their 10-game road trip 5-5.

Juan Pierre went 4-for-5 with an inside-the-park homer -- his second four-hit game and first home run of the season.

AJ is gonna have a tough time but i think we still put out a victory effort.
