June 24, 200422 yr On mlb.tv today they had the braves commentators and they were talking about our pitching staff they said that flat out we have the best starting 5 in baseball...they even said better than the cubs... Nice to hear that from our rivals On a another note....how about that bullpen! yes. a BULLPEN I really REALLY like Howard....kid has got great stuff, just has to keep the walks down....I see this guy getting better each time out and firmly believe he is gonna be a staple in our bullpen Great win today guys! Everything fell into place....lets roll with this GO FISH!
June 24, 200422 yr Howard's all or nothing. He can look stellar or he can be awful like he was vs. NY....Things are falling into place between him and Manzy and Perisho as the lefty setup guy. If Koch can get it going, watch out for us.
June 24, 200422 yr this was the perfect opportunity to get Koch in the game to try & build up his confidence....
June 24, 200422 yr The BP gave us 3 shutout innings....and battled back after giving up a double on an error and a few walks. Nice job, and a relief......
June 24, 200422 yr we sure do have a good pitching staff, but i still think the cubs are slightly better. It was good to see Koch out there, i think that will really improve his confindence.
June 24, 200422 yr Did Howard's overthrowing concern anyone else? He needs to learn to pitch, not try to throw stuff past hitters.
June 24, 200422 yr The Braves always give us respect on WSB, FSN South, TBS, and Turner South esp. Don Sutton.
June 24, 200422 yr The real question with Howard and the Marlins is the amount of time the Fish will "invest" in this guy before moving on to the next piece of meat. Seeing Koch pitching the seventh felt right. If he finds success there we have our Rick Helling and perhaps Manzanillo can be Chad Fox for awhile.
June 24, 200422 yr Manzanillo is showing better control, and better stuff so far. His slider is just nasty. Koch seems too one dimensional. But we'll see how it goes with him. Jack leaving him in for just one inning was a good confidence booster.
June 24, 200422 yr Sean Casey=amazing I bit off topic, but yeah....hits a 2 run HR in the 12th to go ahead of the Mets....woo hoo. Danny Graves comes on to get the save. The Mets are now 3 1/2 games back.
June 24, 200422 yr yea lol - i deleted it.. i dont know why i put it in this thread The Braves announcers are props for that one as well.....lol
June 24, 200422 yr On a another note....how about that bullpen! yes. a BULLPEN I really REALLY like Howard....kid has got great stuff, just has to keep the walks down....I see this guy getting better each time out and firmly believe he is gonna be a staple in our bullpen i'm gonna have to disagree with you about howard. i get extremely uneasy when he comes into games. believe it or not, prior to tonight, he was actually really good at not giving up walks. his problem is that he is like a human batting practice machine with an aberrant ability to strike hitters out. he gives up way too many hits to be useful in tight situations. i dont mind us putting him in during a 6 run lead, but i really wish we had someone more reliable to replace him with. i'd rather he work on his game down on the farm... we can bring him up when he's ready...
June 24, 200422 yr What I like is we went out out and found a couple of guys with EXPERIENCE and who both can close to spell Armando some nights. Are these the right two guys? I have no idea but you can see Admin Beinfest's thinking. It will be interesting to see who he rents this year. I'm coming to the conclusion that the Marlins MO is to rent players for the second half BECAUSE they only have to pay them for half a year. Their business plan depends on second half rentals. Without the rentaplayers their losses would become unmanageable. So they trim an extra 15% off their payroll by employing three or four rentaplayers a year rather than signing their equivalents for a full season. If that's what they're doing then Admin Beinfest ought to have a bestseller on his hands. Win the World Series on the backs of the right rentaplayers two years in a row and every bookstore from here to Spokane will be selling "AdminBall", reprint after reprint. Just think about it. "AdminBall" teaches you how you can get a $6 million player for $1 million and a prospect if you play your cards right or at worst pay $3 million for a guy who you've had the luxury of seeing play half a season so you know how he's playing and how he fits your needs. I think we took the risks we did in the first few months with a woeful bullpen (save Armando, all hail Armando :notworthy ) was to insure the money we needed for the second half run. It's how you get $60 million worth of players for $56 million.
June 24, 200422 yr I think down the line Koch will be our 8th inning guy, but right now its Manza's I agree, sorry Marlins2003. I think the consensus is, get Koch some confidence and dont put him in to a game that he could blow it. That way, he develops his confidence. He has got gnasty stuff. Just a matter of time til he gets it back. But it will require confidence and the Marlins are getting that for him. If he blows it in a 7th inning, we still got 3 chances to get it back. But in time, Ramp is right. Koch will be our set-up guy.
June 24, 200422 yr Did Howard's overthrowing concern anyone else? He needs to learn to pitch, not try to throw stuff past hitters. I think he is learning at the MLB level. He is a project, and a very redeemable one. I think the Marlins made the right call getting him for Neal because Howard has very good stuff and Neal just never seemed to break through for us. In time, Howard will get it together. I think he could be our closer of the future.

It's how you get $60 million worth of players for $56 million. Beinfest is worth every penny. The Marlins FO is among the best, the smartest, in the game. I think you hit it right on the head - this team will rent a player and get over the hump to get into the playoffs. The downside is, you have to have a surplus of young talent in order to achieve 'Adminball'. And what I like about it, we have a chance to contend AND maintain fiscal responsibility which EVERY organization in MLB needs to emulate. I like the parity this season. Lots of teams are looking like, well, teams.
June 24, 200422 yr I really appreciate how we're getting props from the Braves's broadcasters. I remember the days when all they did was poke fun at us and question every damn call our management/FO made. Now who's swallowing the big pill? suckers!
