We completely missed Dontrelles spectacular diving catch because commercials ran into the game. This isn't the first time commercials have cut into game action and i'm sure it won't be the last, i'm just PO'ed I didn't get to see the catch live in real time and had to settle for replays because they were too busy with a commercial for David Singers law firm.

It isn't always the FSN production company. Sometimes its the local cable company inserting their ads.

Problem is the 2nd base umpire is not timing the innings correctly.

The second base umpire is required to use a stopwatch to time the amount of time allotted to the TV partners to air commercials.

 

For a regular MLB telecast, 2 minutes and 30 seconds must be allotted in order for the 2 minutes of commercials to be aired. 30 seconds is given to leave and reenter the game telecast. If the second base umpire does not keep time correctly, the commercials will cut into the game as they are required to air completely. The radio doesn't have this problem obviously, but TV does.

Usually the second base umpire handles this, some crews have the crew chief handle it in all games.

You may notice that when a game is not being televised, the breaks are just 2 minutes that the MLB union requires. When there is TV it can be anywhere from 2:30 to 4:00.

1. not to say i don't believe you, but i see absolutely no reference to that umpire requirement in the rulebook (http://www.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/min/baseball_basics/min_basics_umpire.jsp) or in about a dozen different google searches i tried. where did you hear that? can anyone else confirm?

 

2. how exactly could this second base umpire--apparently the designated commercial break timekeeper--fail to "keep time correctly" as you suggest? does he not know how to operate this "stopwatch" he is "required" to use? is he accidentally reading "2 minutes and 30 seconds" when the stopwatch actually reads something less than that? is he hitting the start button before 3 outs are recorded in an inning?

 

3. and more importantly, why is it that this problem occurs on a regular basis during telecasts? the majority of the time, the lawyer commercial eats into or barely manages to make it back to at-bats.

It is in the TV contract and umpires are entrusted to keep time. The 2 minute minimum has been in existance since the union came to be. I remember one game this season on TBS (they usually have several games like this a year) where gave the explanation that the umpire did not keep time correctly.

I've always seen stop watches hanging out of the pockets of umpires and never knew why, now I know.

Old article from 1997 when the umps lost to NBC/FOX/ESPN/SportsChannel in arbitration. Back then it was 2:25, it has grown since.

Usually the second base ump does it because he is the only one that doesn't need to move in between most innings to do things.

The home plate ump must clean home, the first base (in most parks and crews) ump checks the mound and the first baseline, the third base (in most parks and crews) ump checks the groundscrew, tarp, and third baseline, second base ump checks time and second base area.

The lawyer commercial is the Marlins-FSN production's MLB allotted Disclaimer. It is built into the given time.
