July 28, 200422 yr Regular closer Armando Benitez, who has 33 saves in 36 chances, wasn't available on Tuesday because he has inflammation in his right elbow, as revealed in an MRI exam. He is listed as day by day and is not expected to spend any time on the disabled list. http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/...recap&fext=.jsp
July 28, 200422 yr A collective non trade sigh of relief Lets hope Mando can hurry back and other guys in the bullpen can step up when the team needs them the most.
July 28, 200422 yr well, I'm glad that ends the speculation. Hopefully this injury is nothing serious though. We all know how much we need him.
July 28, 200422 yr Author I bet Montreal's conditions had something to do with this. The difference in humidity and altitude can be annoying to those who aren't used to it.

July 28, 200422 yr I was wondering why he didn't come in to pitch the 9th. Let's hope the rest will take care of it. We can't afford to lose him for any time.
July 28, 200422 yr if jack rests mando for a couple days, hopefully koch gets more outings. 479380 id rather not change something good and allow manzanillo to close the games out
July 28, 200422 yr Did anyone else notice that Manzy was not banging himself tonight? He was pitching quickly, and had good movement on his fastball. His change up was also very effective as he was getting alot of swings and misses off it. Very nice outing for Manzy. :thumbup

Inbetween batters, he was clearly on the jumbotron knocking away.

July 28, 200422 yr Jack McKeon strikes again. I know everyone here loves him. BUT he ruins pitchers. Benitez has pitched a lot of 2 innings together and he's not used to that and most closers don't pitch more than one inning. One other thing I noticed when I was in Pittsburgh is that when it looks like the Marlins are going to have to bring someone else in, they don't get them up and warming in time. Some guys need a lot more time warming up. I just hope he hasn't ruined Mando! My heart stopped when I saw that!

My heart stopped when I saw that! 479543 When I read Mike Berardino newest poison pen piece on Mando's injury I went and checked to see exactly how overused he was. Well it turns out he's not in the top ten for innings pitched or pitches thrown among pitchers with five or more saves. Smoltze has more two inning appearances than Benitez, who is fourth in that category. If I can find a website where I can determine pitches thrown per appearance (someone let me know if they know where to find it) I'll report on that as well. My sense is that Armando is a very efficient hurler and probably has thrown less pitches per 1+ inning appearances than many closers do in one inning, Braden Looper for example. As usual with Mike Berardino he never wastes an opportunity to take a cheap shot at the Marlins manager, front office or ownership. But that's Mike and thank god we know him for what he is, a malcontent and second-rate columnist.
July 28, 200422 yr Of course as soon as I posted above I found number of pitches by relievers with five or more saves. Bentitez is at 770 for comparison purposes. Here's a few: Rivera 802, Graves 723, J nathan (min) 766, Isringhausen 746, Herges 820, Chacon 852, Dotel 940, Foulke 808, Biddle 857, Worrell 779, Looper 835. Also for pitches per inning Benitez is nowhere near the top, in fact he's, as I suspected, a very efficient pitcher with an average 15.3 pitches per (3 out) inning.
