BERARDINO: Walker's snub of deal mystifying

Featured Replies

Walker was supposedly never asked to remove his no trade clause

Berardino is blowin alot of smoke here....

hmm, so Enc is owed 5.7 mil through next year? well that's not good.

i think Admin Walker just wanted to stay in Colorado more then not wanting to come to Florida. Coors field probably has to do alot with that too.

Shaq Man,

Maybe just maybe the Marlins will win their division with this trades.? But then again maybe just maybe you felt that we were a better team with an outshape Penny or Choi with his clutch hitting in April and amazing walks, or with Nunez taking another third strike looking or grounding into a double play.?

This trade not only helps the Marlins for this year but also next.

Catcher we are set through next year along with shortstop, second, third, leftfield and centerfield.? Maybe now that Penny has been traded they can use the money to sign Pavano.? Penny singlehandily almost lost the NLCS vs Cubs for us.?

Dude that last line is just ridiculous. He also won 2 world series games, is the team career leader in wins, eats up innings, is one of the few starters who has been able to remain relatively healthy, and is having his best season ever.

I realize they were likely going to lose him after the season. Now instead they'll probably lose Lo Duca. Pick your poison.

and the Marlins could use Penny's money to sign Pavano whether they traded him or not. Except now, surprise! Instead of spending a few hundred thousand on Choi next year, you're spending 4.5 million on Encarnacion. So much for the money saved on Penny!

And maybe you'd like to explain to me how we're set at catcher for next year? Lo Duca's up for arbitration. His 4 million salary could nearly double! At the very least it will go up a couple million, you think the Marlins will pay 6 million per season for Lo Duca when they didn't offer 8 for the best catcher in the game at the same age?

Unless you're talking about Willingham at catcher (who has potential) we are far from being "set" for next year.

The only position this helps us at for next season is with Mota.

Yes Penny is a good pitcher but in order to get something good you need to give some thing good in return. Even you can't ignore the fact that Penny has been inconsistent especially over since the end of May. How come Mike failed to mention in his article what Penny's ERA is over the last two months or that his fastball which was constantly being clocked at 97 mph in April and May topped at 92 MPH the last few starts. Mike also failed to mention Choi's stats from May 1st until now but he can conveniently mention Mota's era over the last seven games. It will be interesting to sse what happens to Penny shape wise once he gets a long term contract. I bet you that LoDuca will be our starting catcher next season. The Marlins FO has learned a good lesson on how important a good catcher is. As far as Willingham I hate to break your bubble but this kid is not a catcher his main position will be in the outfield or first base. In addition this kid has good power but he has yet to show that he is going to be a consistent hitter in the minors never mind the majors.

Encarnacion unfortunately was meant to be moved to another team which I think eventually it will happen either this year or during the offseason. But let me tell you something we won last year because we played as a team and Encarnacion was big part of the team both defensively and offensively. I am not saying that Enc is a superstar but for six or seventh place hitter he is very productive. Did you forget the big HR he hit against Giants in the playoffs 2nd game after we had lost the first game and we were losing the second game. We are not the Yankees who can afford a superstar at every position. Compare all of the six and seventh place hitters statistics for last year and you will find that Enc was one of the better ones.

History with the Marlins FO has been to keep a nucleaus together and have financial flexibility to be able to make the moves require in the middle of season to improve the team.

As a Marlins fan I am proud that at least the FO is trying to win the division this year. All you people who complain about this trade is that this team is build to win now or within the next three years because once all these stars like Cabrera, Beckett, Burnett and Willis reach their free agent years it will be very difficult for the FO to maintain this group together.

This is for the Shaq Man, even Peter Gammons gave L Beinfest kudos for making the best moves to improve the team. Did you missed the part where Gammons taljked about Penny and his shoulder and that there might be som questions there. Did you forget last year when we tried to trade him to Cincinnati and they would not take him because of questions about his shoulder. Did Mike mention this in his article?

Shaq Man don't you think that overall this Marlins team is better than the team that started the season.

We have improved our bullpen, our hitting, team speed and defense. Yes we may have weakened our starting pitching but we still have four pretty good starters which is more than a majority of the teams in baseball.

This team has a chance to compete for the division tittle the team we had before there was no way.

Thank you FO!!!!!!

:hat

Penny was given up because he didnt give a damn

he didnt work out, he ate alot of unhealthy things, and he smoked alot

put that with the fact he was content with whatever happens... meaning if he had a 12-12 record he wouldnt care just as long as he was being paid

that and the FO thinks they can resign Pavvy

This is for Mike and Shaq Man maybe you can include this stats in your next column.

"Brad Penny, who after the 6th inning this season is holding batters to .364 and after 106 pitches (remember, this guy is a starter) is holding opposing batters to a mere .571!

:hat

Bernadino is an ass.

Also, the part about "sniffing" the playoffs is BS, Walker went with the Rockies to the playoffs in 1995.

Also if we reach the playoffs we dont need a 5th starter.....once you get in you use a rotation of 4 starters......Beckett, Pavano, Burnett, Willis and with Mota and Benitez at the end of the game its looking good.

remember last year we used Beckett,Penny,Redman,Willis for the NLDS

Then Beckett,Penny,Redman,Pavano for the NLCS and The same for the World Series and remember Redman Choked!!!!! in the NLCS and WS..... So Burnett will replace Penny and AJ is a hell of a lot better

2003--------2004

JP-----------JP

Castillo-----Castillo

Pudge-------Lo Duca-----not Pudge but 10 times better then Redmond

Lowell-------Lowell

Cabrera-----Cabrera

Lee----------Conine-----2 champinships and a leader N we know what he did in WS

Encarn------Encarn

Gonzo------Gonzo

Beckett-----Beckett

Pavano-----Pavano

Willis--------Willis

Penny------A.J-----BIG TIME UPGRADE AJ RULES!!!!!!!

Redman----valdez----wash

Fox---------Mota---BIG Upgrade

UGI--------Benitez

Looks good to me the FO did the best they could :thumbup

F*** Beradino and Le Batard those 2 are the most negative critics on the Marlins and the Heat and then when they do good they kiss their ass and then make it seem like they were true fans from the beginning.....Biggest front runners in SFLA and there is plenty down here. I remember last year when the Marlins were doing bad they were hating on them and then they go to the Playoffs and win the WS and they become their #1 fan and say that they new it all along as well as when the Heat started 0-7 and then started talking sh** then they became the heat #1 fan when they reached the playoffs then when the faced the hornets they did not give them a chance and then the Heat win and what Happens Le Batard and Beradino new it all along again......2 Dumbasses

Le Batard and Beradino :thumbdown

When did Penny become everyone's enemy on this boards? If he had slimmed down would you like him as much as Beckett and Burnett?

Yes, if he would have lost 15-20 pounds and grown a mustache then we would have really loved him.

:rofl

I e-mailed Berardumbo about this article, especially the error in saying that Walker never "sniffed the playoffs". He wrote back, here is our exchange.

My e-mail to the Sun-Sentinel:

Among the errors I've read in your past columns, and the latest error that you wrote in your latest column on Admin Walker, you should either do better research or hire a fact checker. It's really becoming irresponsible and sloppy journalism

You OBVIOUSLY missed the simplest of facts that Admin Walker was a member of the 1995 Colorado Rockies Wild Card team. As a matter of fact, they were the FIRST NL WILD CARDS EVER!!!

Check your facts.

Mike Berardumbo's response:

Michael,

What can i say? I botched that one, and I specifically looked up walker's career and just missed that one. We do have fact checkers. They're called editors, and they missed it too. But that's no excuse. I stink. Feel free to mock me whenever you feel like it. Have a great weekend.

Mike Berardino

He sure is a smart-ass, punk!

Redman----valdez----wash

no way, redman was probablly our most consistent starter last year and valdez is a mediocre #5.

He only watched the postseason last year. That's why he thinks Redman sucks.

Maybe he actually compare this years stats just like our favorite writer Mike.

Here are the stats so far this year:

PITCHERS W- L ERA BA G GS CG GF SH SV IP H R ER HR BB SO

Redman 8- 8 4.55 .295 21 21 2 0 0 0 128.2 147 74 65 21 46 68

Valdez 9- 6 5.53 .303 23 20 1 2 1 0 114.0 141 75 70 21 31 37

:hat

It looks almost the same to me the stats between valdez and redman this year. and i saw the marlins entire season last year and yes redman was one of our best before the all star game but then check his stats after the all star game he started to drop and then got rocked by everyone in the postseason

probably sick of getting snide emails from people all weekend screaming in CAPS "HAHA you missed a year! you missed a year! you suck! you're an irresponsible journalist!"

i mean he may very well suck :shifty but you don't have to be childish about it. i'm quite certain it's been pointed out to him 5 billion times already.
