This game is not a must win.

503440[/snapback]

arguable

Well, unless the Fish need to go 52-0 down the stretch, this isn't a must win...especially since the Cards aren't a team that the Marlins are chasing..

It would be very nice to make a move in the WC and Division standings now, but calling every game 'must win' from here-on-out is a little premature.

I was saying it was must win because if Beckett pitches well enough to win(and we do win) this could put us on a roll.... its not really a must win, but its damn near close

Yahoo! Sports Game Preview

For the Florida Marlins to have a chance to return to the World Series, getting Josh Beckett back on track would be a big help.

The World Series MVP hopes to start showing some improvement as Florida opens a three-game series against the major league-leading St. Louis Cardinals at Pro Player Stadium.

While the defending world champion Marlins have been hovering around .500 for the past month, the Cardinals have gone 26-6 since July 1 to pass the New York Yankees for the best record in baseball and build an 11 1/2 -game lead in the NL Central.

Florida has fallen eight games back of first-place Atlanta in the NL East.

``We've got to go into every series now hoping to win two out of three,'' Marlins manager Jack McKeon said. ``Let's be realistic. We've got to have a streak like that -- unless everybody else goes haywire.''

Beckett will try to get better results against a St. Louis offense that leads the NL with a .281 batting average and is second with 589 runs scored.

The right-hander has been ripped for 12 runs -- nine earned -- and 15 hits over seven innings in two starts since coming off the disabled list. He has been on the DL three times this season, twice for a finger problem. Beckett has not pitched more than four innings in any outing since May 25, and has gone 0-4 in six starts since beating Houston on May 20.

``The results are bad but physically I feel OK,'' Beckett said after allowing eight runs in four innings of an 11-6 loss at Arizona on Wednesday. ``It's not mechanics. It's just executing pitches. When you don't execute pitches, that's what happens.''

Most St. Louis pitchers have been executing lately, allowing 12 runs during the team's current five-game winning streak.

That run includes a strong outing by Chris Carpenter, who opposes Beckett on Tuesday. Carpenter is 3-0 with a 3.23 ERA in his last four starts, lasting eight innings three times in that span.

St. Louis' regular 3-4-5 hitters -- Albert Pujols, Scott Rolen and Jim Edmonds -- are a combined 16-for-37 (.432) against Beckett.

Edgar Renteria could go from hitting in front of that trio to behind it due to the recent acquisition of Admin Walker. Manager Tony La Russa may hold off on that switch after seeing Renteria go 5-for-5 from the No. 2 slot on Sunday as St. Louis completed a three-game sweep of the New York Mets with a 6-2 win.

``I don't care,'' Renteria said. ``I'll do the best I can do in any spot and try to help the team win.''
