November 24, 200421 yr I have heard from several people that the Marlins are interested in Carlos Delgado. I would love to have the guy in Miami - the guys is an absolute Stud...but I just dont think is financially feasible for us. What have you guys heard? :jerry
November 24, 200421 yr i bet the house it doesnt happen...the marlins are being cheap so far and i dought if anything changes...they expect to win with what they have and we already know its not enough....i hope they have some master plan that they are just waiting for the price tags to go down on some guys then sign them up when they see there not going to get a better deal...I hope...

I honestly think Beinfest knows what he is doing by not spending so much money on backups like redmond. We will sign Lo duca to a multi-year deal and as for Pavano there is nothing we can do but wait and see. Rudy was an unfortunate loss but I have faith in Beinfest, that he has some sort of plan. Basically you can't spend lucrative amounts of money on bench players.
November 24, 200421 yr Delgado is apparently the #1 target of the Mariners according to some article on One Stop Baseball. I heard somewhere Sexson could be headed for Baltimore.
November 25, 200421 yr Why offer big bucks for a guy on the decline? Pass. 621202 On the decline? What a ridiculous and utterly baseless statement. He is an amazing defensive first basemen and can easily put up a 40/110 season. Last year after missing more than the first 30+ games of the season he still knocked in 32 HR and 99 RBI in only ~120 games. He is an absolute monster and would instantly put us back into contention. Not to mention he is the lefty slugger we so desperately need.

November 25, 200421 yr I don't think there is any way we can afford him. 621360 Maybe Loria won the Lotto tonight with any luck. :plain
November 25, 200421 yr There is a chance but I doubt our budget would jump this season enough to make room for him. He'd have to take a 1 year deal or some sort of backloaded deal.

He's not going to continue hitting that well in the third, fourth and fifth year of the bloated contract. Let the Mets and Orioles of the world have him. Adequate lefty sluggers can be found cheaply this offseason, next offseason and the offseason after that. They may not hit as well as Delgado this year or next year, but they'll certainly outpace him.

November 26, 200421 yr Looks like Carlos will be most likely go to Seattle. M's lead Delgado chase, sources say Slugger willing to bat third, giving cleanup spot to free agent By JOHN HICKEY SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER Despite a report on Toronto-area radio Wednesday night, the Mariners continue to be the front-runner in the Carlos Delgado sweepstakes. Baseball sources said the Mariners have asked Delgado, the first baseman and cleanup hitter for the Toronto Blue Jays for the better part of a decade, if he would be willing to bat third in Seattle. Delgado has confirmed that he'd be willing to make the switch, the sources said. That would leave the Mariners free to follow the addition of Delgado with another move in free agency, adding either first baseman Richie Sexson or third baseman Troy Glaus. Seattle could still use Delgado as the cleanup hitter if the Mariners are unable to land Sexson or Glaus. But the idea in the Mariners front office seems to be that in an ideal world, Sexson or Glaus would bat cleanup and Delgado third in the 2005 Seattle lineup. The Mariners can add two first baseman if they so choose because they are looking for both a first baseman and a designated hitter this off-season. The outgoing DH, Edgar Martinez, is a close friend of Delgado's and has made it clear he'd be willing to lobby Delgado on the Mariners' behalf. Seattle is also looking at the addition of a less expensive alternative at third base in free agent Corey Koskie. Were those roster-addition ideas to pan out, that would leave second baseman Bret Boone, who has 30-homer, 100-RBI potential but didn't come close to either level last season, free to bat fifth, and left fielder Raul Ibanez, who has a career-best of 24 homers, to hit sixth for the Mariners. If they could make those additions of proven home run hitters in the middle of the lineup, the Mariners would be able to compete with the rest of the power brokers in the American League West. Seattle finished last in the American League in home runs and runs scored last year, a major reason the club went from 93 wins in 2003 to 99 losses in 2004. The Toronto radio report suggested Delgado, 32, was likely to return to the Blue Jays because the Mariners were leery of his past knee troubles. However, the Mariners and most other clubs interested in Delgado are evidently in possession of a report by Florida specialist Dr. Dan Kanell, the father of the Denver Broncos quarterback, in which the Marlins' orthopedist gave his opinion that the knee is sound. Delgado's agent, David Sloane, commissioned Kanell's examination of Delgado's knees after the season to make sure clubs could go into the free agent bidding process knowing his health status. Sexson, who will turn 30 next month, played just 29 games last year with Arizona because of shoulder surgery, but has a career best of 45 homers while playing with Milwaukee. Delgado, who also spent a month on the disabled list last year with rib cage problems, had seven consecutive 100-RBI seasons before coming up a little short (99) last season. Sexson has drawn interest from the Orioles and Mets while the same two teams have approached Delgado, who also has a standing multi-year offer from Toronto, the only team for which he's ever played. Glaus is being courted by the Tigers, who have already signed longtime Angels teammate Troy Percival, and the Diamondbacks. NOTES: In the pitching arena, the Mariners continue to shop for a starter. Right-hander Carl Pavano of the Florida Marlins will visit Seattle next week. The 18-game winner is probably the most highly sought front-line starter available. The Mariners are also looking at Jon Leiber, who returned to health with the Yankees last season. ... Bloomberg News reported that Nintendo Co. has bought more shares in the Mariners and now owns in excess of 50 percent of the club. ... Lefty reliever George Sherrill, who made his big league debut in 2004 after being signed away from Winnipeg of the independent Northern League, will return to Winnipeg just before Christmas. Sherrill, a success after a July 16 promotion for the Mariners, will help that franchise in its annual holiday skills camp Dec. 23 at the University of Winnipeg.
November 26, 200421 yr Whoever says Delgado is on the decline is on crack. The guy hit 42 HR with 145 RBI in 2003. He was hampered with a rib injury all last year and still hit 30 HR. And this was his first year that he missed more than 20 games since 1996. Get a clue.
November 26, 200421 yr Ichiro Koskie Delgado Sexson Boone Ibanez That could compete with just about anyone
November 26, 200421 yr The Marlins are cheap. No wonder we cant keep alot of our guys. Thats life. 621589 Dudes theres a differnce between cheap and not having any money to spend...

November 26, 200421 yr There's not many injury-plagued sluggers on the wrong side of 30 that maintain their level of play through age 34/35. This is the second time in three years he's missed time. Delgado's not going to accept a two-year deal so it's pointless to overpay him for that third, fourth and fifth year.
November 26, 200421 yr Injury plagued? Cliff Floyd is injury plagued, Carlos Delgado is not injury plagued. 1996 - 138 games 1997 - 153 games 1998 - 142 games 1999 - 152 games 2000 - 162 games 2001 - 162 games 2002 - 143 games 2003 - 162 games 2004 - 128 games That's not injury plagued.
November 26, 200421 yr Missed time two of the past three years? Yeah, injury-plagued. Former catcher? Yeah, due to catch up him. And just how many of that time he spent at DH were days he was too sore to field? Anything more than a 2 or 3-year would not be a good investment for the Marlins, and he's going to get a 4 or 5 year deal from the O's, Ms, or Mets.
November 26, 200421 yr lol 143 games is hardly missing time.. Manny Ramirez and Davis Ortiz each played 150 games this year.. 7 more than 143.. do you really consider 143 games alot of missed time? I guarantee the average MLB star plays around 149-150 games a year. Having played 162 GAMES (!) 3 out of 4 years is pretty incredible and shows his DURABILITY.
