Weathers unlikely to return to Marlins

Free-agent reliever David Weathers, who provided a September boost to the Marlins, said Friday he expects to sign elsewhere in the next few days.

Weathers was weighing a trio of two-year offers, including one that totaled $3 million. Two of those offers have come from National League clubs, Weathers said.

Meanwhile, the Marlins haven't budged from their token bid of one year at $500,000.

"I definitely wanted to come back," Weathers said from his Tennessee home. "I enjoyed that team. I enjoyed the young guys, but I've also got a family to consider and everything else. I was a little disappointed with the effort that was made."

Manager Jack McKeon called Weathers, 36, the day before Thanksgiving to let him know he hoped he would re-sign. Weathers posted a 2.70 ERA in eight September outings with the Marlins, including two spot starts.

"I know Jack wants me back there," Weathers said, "but honestly I couldn't tell you what direction they're headed in. It's part of the game. I'm sure they'll find somebody else that will help them."

Because Weathers was out of baseball on Aug. 31, he can be signed without compensation to the Marlins.

that was real nice of him...

he was good while he was here, but i doubt he could do that for a whole season

well in limited innings since 2000 he's has ERAs from 2.41 to 4.15.

doesn't sound bad to me.

Beinfest better have some bullpen guys in mind...

never said he was bad, i just don't think he could sustain that kind of performance throughout the season for us next year, nor i do i think he will anywhere else

as for other bullpen gus, well, i sure hope he's got someone

bullpen pitchers are so inconsisent that throwing a lot of money at them is not always a good idea. one year a guy will be one of the best stoppers in the league and the next year he will be downright awful.

what's throwing a lot of money? Weathers probably would've stuck around for a reasonable amount. But 500K is not trying to keep someone.

I wonder if McKeon felt stupid trying to convince Weathers to stick around seeing that he was only offered 500K..

how much would you have offered him?

  • Author

I dunno... not much. Don't get me wrong, Weathers is nothing special & actually I've never been much of a fan.

That said, he's a veteran with a fairly good track record, and the ERAs he's posted since 2000 are nothing to scoff at.

I wouldn't have offered him much more I guess.... probably still under 1 million. I just tire of seeing our bullpen made up of guys making the major league minimum. Hopefully Beinfest's got some names in mind.

Weathers is not worth 3 mil. No way! 750 K for the most. 3 million vs. 500 K is a huge difference so no wonder why he is leaving. I didn't think he was that good. We will miss Seanez more.

we are cheap.

500 k is another slap in the face to a player.

an offer for the sake of saying...ya we made an offer.

who the hell is going to fill the pen next year?

kensing

A guy who can't close trying to close.

Two guys who's arms asploded and who knows how they are pitching.

A lefty who can't get lefties out.

And a couple of "rookies".

And one or two of the usual suspects.

Mota

Fox/Spooneybarger

Perisho

Tankersly/Kensing

Wayne/Bump

In my opinion at least. Isn't that all we really have left?

Well at least the offense is bett...errrrr..... well, it won't be worse, at least not by too much.

I don't think there is anyway Tankersley is moved through the system that fast. They didn't even have him pitch in the AFL. Maybe a September call-up, but that's a huge maybe.

What's Borland's status?

There were articles this past year saying they were trying to get him onto the club this past year! I wouldn't be shocked at all if he is on the opening day roster.

How long was Gracesqui in the system before we decided to call him up and thew him onto the field in SF? Anyone know?

meh, journalists are dumb. If the front office has him on the opening day roster I will be very surprised and very critical of them. He hasn't even pitched in Low-A ball.

he had 5 or 6 years of minor league experience. Started in 1998.

The man was traded and released during the season. He doesn't deserve anything more than 500K

That's my train of thought too. Yes we are cheap, but you have to factor in that Weathers is one of those bullpen guys you put in when the game doesn't mean much.

I rather save pennies with Weathers and then spend the money on a setup man.

You people are amazing, "Why isn't the front office making moves, all the other teams are!"

NEWS FLASH: Not one major signing has occured other than Armando Benitez, Troy Percival, and somewhat Omar Vizquel. All of those teams are giving up their draft picks. Most teams are signing bench players right now where they don't risk heavy compensation. Just wait until the end of December into January, thats when the fun will start.
