December 12, 200421 yr http://msn.foxsports.com/story/3238930 The Milwaukee Brewers have traded All-Star closer Dan Kolb to the Braves for Jose Capellan, the team's top pitching prospect, the Sporting News has learned. The move indicates that John Smoltz will make the switch from the bullpen to the starting rotation. Smoltz debuted as a closer for the Braves in 2001. Smoltz recorded 44 saves in 2004, and had a career-high 55 saves in 2002. The Braves had a vacancy in their starting rotation after having lost Russ Ortiz to the Diamondbacks on Friday. Ortiz inked a four-year, $33 million deal with Arizona. Kolb made the NL All-Star team last season, compiling a 2.98 earned run average in 64 appearances and setting the Brewers' franchise record with 39 saves. Kolb was eligible for salary arbitration after making $1.5 million in 2004. Capellan, a 6-foot-3, 170-pound right hander, appeared in three games for the Braves in 2004, going 0-1 with 11.25 ERA in eight innings pitched. At three different minor league levels, Capellan went 14-4 with 2.32 ERA and 152 strikeouts over 139 2/3 innings. Great...
December 12, 200421 yr Capellan is a stud. Good move for the Brewers. 632663 agreed damn, they'll be soooooooooo good in a couple year prince fielder, ricky weeks, JJ Hardy, now capellan sheesh
December 12, 200421 yr I wonder how John Smoltz will do as a starting pitcher next year... 632676 I have a feeling we'll find out game 1 next year.
December 12, 200421 yr My friend is a major Braves fan.. and is a major Cappellan fan so, Im waiting to see his reaction to the deal.. Nice pickup for both teams though.
December 12, 200421 yr Wow...incredible move by the Braves They replace Wright and Ortiz who will make a combined 15 million + each season for the next few years... With Kolb. He made a whole 1.5 million last season, I doubt his salary for next season would eclipse that much. Their rotation is going to welcome back Ramirez and now Smoltz and Kolb will be able to dominate in the pen as Smoltz did... That is some smart economic baseball...the Fish should take some lessons.
December 12, 200421 yr Didn't we rough up Kolb big time last year? 632770 yes 632842 He had a save against us last year though. They just showed it on sports center. :lol
