Sun-Sentinel says AJ may be on the trading block

Featured Replies

AJ has the talent to be a cy young winner

Vazquez has the talent to be really, really good, just not that good

the man is a good pitcher w/ a better attitude, whose contract runs out after AJ's

i hate to see AJ go, but i really think you can attribute Vazquez's troubles to NYC media and the pressure of a playoff race. Moving to us is like moving to Mars compared to NYC. He'd thrive here, and be as least as good, if not better, than he was w/ Montreal. His w/l would certainly be better. Do it.

throw in Dioner and i'd do it in a heartbeat, despite the troubles he had this year

I think it would only be a good move if they get Halsey, F-Rod and money as well. Or at least swallowable just F-Rod and money.

AJ Burnett is a player who has shown brilliant flashes of potential, and has also shown a very bad attitude and shows really no interest in returning to play here. Javier Vasquez is a good pitcher who doesn't quite have the potential that AJ does however is under contract. Trading Burnett now guarentees that what happened with Pavano won't happen again. People need to accept that this is how the Marlins will have to do business. Thats all there is too it. Also consider that the Marlins won the WS without AJ and this team will definitly be competitive next year.

Marlins get: Javier Vasquez, Felix Rodriguez and cash (About $10mill)

Yankees get: AJ Burnett

With that im really happy.

Javier Vasquez and 10 mil...i leave laughing all the way to the bank.

I doubt the Yanks give up F-Rod. They just signed him to be part of their pen, not trade bait.

"That would be pretty cool," Burnett said before cracking a joke about Yankees owner George Steinbrenner's clean dress codes. "I don't know if I could shave my goatee."

- From the Palm Beach Post article on this

Wow, how bad does he not want to be a Marlin?

I've talked to AJ a few times briefly when I have gotten the fielder's batter box seats and got to meet him before the games. He seems like the guy who would have the attitude it doesn't matter the uniform he has on or where he is, he is just going out to do his best and leave it on the field. Thats just the kinda vibe I have gotten from him. Real carefree and loose.

633022

Basically, the guy is a straight up FREAK. With his piercings and attitude- a weird individual.

But you trade Beckett, not only do you get the higher return on the deal but you probably get a higher reward on the team because Burnett is a better pitcher.

Plus, even if they throw in ten mil, we have to pay him 8 mil a season for three years. That just ain't right

633075

There is no way that Burnett is better than Josh Beckett or has more potential. I think most scouts would agree.

uuuuh i would disagree with u. Many respected scouts would agree that Burnett is just as good if not better in terms of potential than beckett. But regardless the issue is whether they should trade him. the answer is a resounding yes if it is for a good pitcher (like vasquez) who is under contract and is young.

Javy Vazquez could put up some sick numbers... his last year in Montreal was pretty good and he had 240k's.... shsya!

I just don't understand how you guys think AJ is equal to Beckett. Did you remember what he did in the postseason? It was one of the best performances in history. I think Josh will have a HUGE year this year-18-20 wins.

Guys, do you realize what you're saying?

Even if we get $10 million from the Yankees, we're still on the hook for $8 million a season for the next three years, and that's if Vazquez wants to stay...remember, he could demand a trade at the end of this coming season if he's dealt. While everyone is so certain that AJ wants, out, what's to say that the same won't happen with Javier?

Additionally, AJ has yet to "put it together," and everyone (including himself) knows it. An unproven player cannot (nor will he receive) more than $8 million a season from any team. Burnett is no different than Matt Clement, and teams aren't breaking the door down for Clement right now, and when he signs, it won't be for more than $18-$20 mil for 3 years. At the absolute worst, AJ would command $24/3 years...exactly what we'd be paying Javy.

Remember, AJ's going to be making $3.5 mil this season not because we signed him to a contract when he was young, but because that's what it's expected an arbiter feels he deserves. If proven players like Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Beltran have to fight for money, AJ won't have it thrown at him.

I still don't understand why people are so gung-ho on this deal.

The problem is that we've been saying that for years. "oh this will be his year; he'll blowout". Burnett on pure stuff alone is the better pitcher. Go on the scouting sites. If youve ever listened to people like Leo Mazzone and other pitching coaches they all say the same thing: Burnett is the best pitcher the Marlins have. That not to say Beckett doesn't have great potential just means Burnett is better.

WOW. i completely disagree. Clement is a stop gap with no where near the potential of Burnett. And your talkinga bout alot of what if's, Vasquez can demand whatever he wants and we dont have to give it to him. Burnett is a free agent for a fact. Its not a what if.

Dude, if he demands a trade we're required (as per the CBA) to honor his request or he can opt out of his deal. It's not like we can just tell him to suck it up and play.

More than half of you said that AJ should be the opening day starter and now you're willing to run him out of town? For shame.

Dude, i don't know where you got that from. You are by no means required to trade him. You are required to look into it and depending on the wording in his present contract he may be able to opt out. But listen its a fact that Burnett will be a free agent and he has hented that he is not really interested in pitching for this organization, or better said he wants a similar situation to that of Pavano. In addition, i am not a hyporcrite because all things being equal i want to keep Burnett but i also dont want to lose him for nothing al la pavano.

It doesn't ask who would you want your opening day starter to be o wise one.

If you did that I bet a lot of people would have Unit or Rocket, basically not one of the 4 listed there. And AJ was the #2 when he came back last year so it would make sense from him to go from 2 to 1 I don't see how that makes everyone who voted AJ a hypocrite. And not everyone who wants to trade AJ voted in that I bet, and I doubt everyone who voted posted here.

Take a chill pill man.

Oh wise one, it asked, out of our projected pitchers for 2005, who would start opening day: essentially, the question was loaded to gauge who people were expecting the most out of from 2005. Would this be Josh's first fully healthy year, or would AJ bust out and get those 18-20 wins we know he's capable of. After all, the man who is the opening day starter is regarded as the staff "ace."

By having 25 people (more than half) answer that AJ should start opening day, people not only commented on AJ's ability, but also on the belief that he is OUR best pitcher.

Not to mention that the Diamondbacks don't want Javier Vazquez for Randy Johnson, they want AJ Burnett; not to mention they put him in the same category as Zito, Hudson, Mulder, Edwin Jackson, and Ben Sheets (all names that the Diamondbacks said were the only way they'd trade RJ). Says something when a third team (who can have it's pick of the litter) picks one player over the other, doesn't it?

Is that what it was asking because I missed that part. Maybe you could quote that part because I just don't see it. What I see is a question who do people want to start out of those 4 opening day. And a number of people who said AJ said why they think Josh would be better as a 3. You put Josh yourself, so you must think AJ is not our top pitcher, unless you don't even believe your own definition of the question. Talk about a flip flopper.

Can you prove those are the same people posting here?

The Diamond Backs are looking to save money. And AJ would let them save a lot more than taking on Vaz would. I guess you could try to argue that, and you probably would since you appear that asinine, but don't because trust me, Vaz is making a lot more than AJ next year.

The Marlins on the other hand are looking for longevity, not so much for saving money this year. And are you prepared to say the D'backs are always right, meaning when they want someone that they turn out to live to the expectations the D'backs give to them?

They DIDN'T want Vazquez because Vazquez would have probably demanded a trade because with guaranteed money he might as well pitch in a pitcher's park and for a winning team.

They are both the same age, Vazquez has more good seasons and hasn't had TJ surgery in the past.

I think it's very possible that the Fish would counter the deal with Vazquez and 15 million for Burnett rather than Vaz, 10 and FR for Burnett. It has been said that 10 million is the bottom line number, it could be higher.
