December 12, 200421 yr Pavano decides on Yankees By Juan C. Rodriguez Staff Writer Posted December 12 2004 ANAHEIM, Calif. ? Carl Pavano's mother and sister last month purchased Yankees rings just in case he decided to sign with the Bronx Bombers. They won't have to return them. Saturday, Pavano informed Scott Shapiro, his Coral Gables-based agent, he had settled on pinstripes. The Marlins' free-agent right-hander waded through five offers before settling on the Yankees' bid, a four-year contract reportedly worth around $42 million. Shapiro and Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman still have to hammer out some contractual details before a deal is announced. "Deep down, like every kid does from that area, he grew up wanting to be with the Yankees or Red Sox," Shapiro said of Pavano, a Connecticut native. "I think he had feelings about both organizations, but ultimately wanted to be part of that Yankee tradition." Pavano emerged as the game's most sought-after free agent pitcher after going 18-8 with a 3.00 ERA in his second consecutive 200-inning season. The Marlins opened the bidding at three years, $21 million and never had occasion to increase the offer. AIMING HIGH When GM Admin Beinfest on Friday said the Marlins were exploring options for its open rotation spot, no one figured the names would include Javier Vazquez and Tim Hudson. Part of Saturday's Winter Meetings chatter included talk of the Marlins moving A.J. Burnett for the Yankees' Vazquez and cash. A major league source confirmed that discussion had taken place. The Marlins would likely need no less than $10 million to make the deal work. Vazquez, who pitched for the Marlins ownership in Montreal, is owed $34.5 million over the next three years. Burnett is eligible for arbitration and will command about $3.5 million next season before qualifying for free agency in 2006. The Yankees may be trying to acquire Burnett to flip him to the Diamondbacks as part of a deal for Randy Johnson. Burnett's name was on a list of desirable pitchers Arizona submitted to New York. The Marlins are also on the verge of joining the fray for Hudson, the sought-after Oakland Athletics right-hander. The two teams have not exchanged names, but discussions were moving in that direction. Just how the Marlins could swing a trade for Hudson is unclear. He is due $6.75 million in 2005 before becoming eligible for free agency. A Georgia native, Hudson resides in Apollo Beach, south of Tampa. Interested teams include the Orioles, Dodgers, Cardinals and Braves. The Athletics would likely need an affordably priced starter in return. The Dodgers are believed to be dangling Edwin Jackson. Any exchange involving the Orioles would likely start with left-hander Erik Bedard. Unless they are prepared to part with Dontrelle Willis, the Marlins probably don't have enough major league-ready prospects to acquire Hudson without involving a third team. The other question the Marlins have to ask is how much do they want to give up for a one-year rental? Hudson reportedly is looking for his next contract to pay him no less than $12 million annually. Another name linked to the Marlins was free-agent left-hander Odalis Perez. While the Marlins have legitimate interest, Perez may prove too costly. The Dodgers offered him arbitration, meaning he would cost the Marlins the 16th overall pick in next year's draft. The Washington Nationals reportedly offered Perez, 27, a three-year deal for about $18 million. He is thought to be seeking something more in line with the contracts given Jon Lieber, Jaret Wright and Kris Benson (three years in the $21 million range).
December 12, 200421 yr Agreed. This is compete BS and doesn't deserve the right to be on this site. Just forget it people. No need to worry. I guess they just got bored and wanted to report something.
December 12, 200421 yr Get it done with Hudson....without AJ....Deal Josh and a prospect for Hudson. Hudson, AJ, Leiter, Willis would be hot.
December 12, 200421 yr Actually, I would prefer AJ over Beckett being traded for some crazy reason of a hunch.
December 12, 200421 yr if the yanks would pay half of Vasquez's salary for the next 3 years, this would be OUTSTANDING for the Marlins. Vasquez is not the pitcher Burnett is, but he's close enough that it would be well worth the money saved.
December 12, 200421 yr Can someone tell me if we offered Valdez arbitration? 632953 we did
December 12, 200421 yr Get it done with Hudson....without AJ....Deal Josh and a prospect for Hudson. Hudson, AJ, Leiter, Willis would be hot. 632948 That's for 2005... what about for 2006? We'd lose Hudson, probably AJ, and definitely Leiter. We'd be left with only Willis, meaning we'd have to reassemble our entire pitching staff. We'd finish last in 2006. We'd go from first to worst... yet again.
December 12, 200421 yr Vasquez, Beckett, Willis, Leiter, Valdez. Im happy with that starting rotation.
December 12, 200421 yr WFAN here in NY is saying the marlins and Yanks are in serious talks about a Vaz-Burnett deal. Admin Beinfest would have to be on crack to do that deal.

Admin Beinfest would have to be on crack to do that deal. 632973 He won't do it. Where would we get the money to pay this guy 24 million over 3 years (even after the Yanks give us 10 million)? No way. This trade would be horrible.

This trade would be horrible. 632977 That would make it 14 over 3 years, or about 4 million a year which is what AJ will make in 2006, and a lot less than what he will get in 2007.
December 12, 200421 yr If the Yankee's pay half of Vazquez salary I'll do it. Though im a bit worried about Vazquez arm. It was reported by Peter Gammons that he was topping out in the high 80's. I like Odalis Perez alot. I see him as a lefthanded version of Livan Hernandez. I'll offer him a 3 year 19-20 ml deal. At that price I'll be okay with losing the draft pick. As for Hudson. I'll be willing to trade Willis, Wayne, and Messenger for Hudson if he is willing to sign a 4 year 46 mil dollar extension WITH US. What do you all think?
December 12, 200421 yr I don't want to deal AJ.....Give em Josh if anything....AJ will be our ace for years and years to come.
December 12, 200421 yr This is what i hate. How could the Marlins even Consider touching Burnett. Beckett or Burnett should stay in this organization for a long time. They both have great talent. There will be no Rotation without them two.
December 12, 200421 yr "That would be pretty cool," Burnett said before cracking a joke about Yankees owner George Steinbrenner's clean dress codes. "I don't know if I could shave my goatee." - From the Palm Beach Post article on this Wow, how bad does he not want to be a Marlin?

"I don't know if I could shave my goatee." - From the Palm Beach Post article on this Wow, how bad does he not want to be a Marlin? 633021 I've talked to AJ a few times briefly when I have gotten the fielder's batter box seats and got to meet him before the games. He seems like the guy who would have the attitude it doesn't matter the uniform he has on or where he is, he is just going out to do his best and leave it on the field. Thats just the kinda vibe I have gotten from him. Real carefree and loose.
December 12, 200421 yr I thought we would be shopping Burnett ever since I heard we were pursuing OPerez
December 12, 200421 yr Hey.. how about they the yankees throw in Matsui along with Vazquez for AJ. That'd be swell.
December 12, 200421 yr no! DONT DEAL AJ he has proven himself already, and he is just entering his prime he is far better than vazquez can pray to be
December 12, 200421 yr New Jersey Ledger In order to do such a deal, the Yankees would have to include some money (perhaps about $10 million) to help the Marlins pay the $34.5 million that Vazquez is scheduled to make over the next three years and possibly offer another player, such as Brad Halsey or Felix Rodriguez,
December 12, 200421 yr Wow...what a brutal deal that would be. Just furthur proves why MLB needs to do something to level the playing field....it's essentially like buying Burnett off of us.

I wouldn't like it - but I could adjust to it. BTW: It's supposely 4 years - 39 million for Pavy.
