December 15, 200421 yr More teams vie for Marlins' Burnett From Herald Staff and Wire Reports Interest in Marlins right-hander A.J. Burnett continues to intensify, leaving the team with an increasingly difficult decision. Baltimore is the latest team, along with the Yankees, Red Sox and Tigers, who have shown interest in trading for the pitcher. Boston's offer likely would start with pitcher Bronson Arroyo (10-9, 4.03 ERA) and probably include at least one other player. Baltimore is said to be offering prospects, potentially including Double A right-hander Hayden Penn (the organization's pitcher of the year) and Triple A right-hander John Mayne. Lefty Erik Bedard (6-10, 4.59 ERA for the Orioles in 2004) would be another option. A Detroit offer likely would need to include a starting pitcher such as Jeremy Bonderman (11-13, 4.89 ERA). One source said Colorado also has shown interest in Burnett. Burnett, who earned $2.5 million this past season, is eligible for arbitration and will become a free agent after the 2005 season. The Marlins, concerned about losing him for nothing next winter, have not offered a long-term contract and continue to weigh options. They also remain interested in Oakland right-hander Tim Hudson, who will be a free agent next winter. ? Marlins interested: Cardinals free agent lefty reliever Steve Kline (2-2, 1.79 ERA, three saves) continues to pique the Marlins' interest, but Florida might not be able to afford him. -- BARRY JACKSON C/O Miami Herald What a fine publication, the Herald. m00ks.
December 15, 200421 yr Just like they would with Tim Hudson, the Orioles will want to negotiate an extension with A.J. Burnett if they agree on a trade for him. It's uncertain whether the Marlins would be as against the 72-hour window like the A's are. The Orioles would probably have to give up Erik Bedard and some additional pitching in order to acquire Burnett. The Marlins might also have interest in Admin Bigbie The Mariners are believed to be talking to free agents Odalis Perez and Kevin Millwood. Seattle remains likely to add a starter and trade either Ryan Franklin or Gil Meche. Perez has also been contacted by the Red Sox and Marlins among others and has been offered a contract by the Nationals and probably the Dodgers.
December 15, 200421 yr Erik Bedard is a pretty good pitcher, saw him a couple times in person last year What about Bedard, Gibbons, and Hayden for AJ?
December 15, 200421 yr Erik Bedard is a pretty good pitcher, saw him a couple times in person last year What about Bedard, Gibbons, and Hayden for AJ? 635652 I agree, I like what I saw from Bedard. If a deal happens with Baltimore involved, he better be included.
December 15, 200421 yr If the O's give us Bedard, Bigbie, and one of their better prospects for AJ and Enc, I'm happy. Hell, I might do that without the prospect.
December 15, 200421 yr A couple more pieces of news from the Herald: ? The Marlins told Antonio Alfonseca he will have a realistic chance to compete with Guillermo Mota for the closer's job. The Marlins agreed to give Alfonseca a $500,000 bonus if he finishes 55 games. ? The Marlins' Jeffrey Loria has become more involved in pursuing players than any owner in South Florida. Al Leiter, who has been raving about Loria, and his wife were given a sales job by the Marlins owner at Three Guys diner in Manhattan before he signed here. ? Braves announcer Don Sutton and ESPN's Gary Miller are among 50-plus applicants for the Marlins TV job.
December 15, 200421 yr This is Gary Miller, Jon Miller is the one you think of and he is not a favorite of mine. I like Sutton better, he knows our team very well and works great with Tommy. Remember that Sutton was the first to give Marlins kudos and picked them to win the Wildcard in 2003.
December 15, 200421 yr Huh...interesting TV candidates. I wonder why Sutton isn't sticking at TBS? 635720 Caray invasion...plus he wants to do play-by-play

December 15, 200421 yr Gary Miller...no thanks. I grew up with Sutton as part of the Braves quad and he would be the one I pick. WGST and Turner Sports signed him, but he has an out clause.
December 15, 200421 yr was wondering... was Sutton fired? just noticed Skip and Chip will be commentating next year for the braves. =[
December 15, 200421 yr was wondering... was Sutton fired? just noticed Skip and Chip will be commentating next year for the braves. =[ 635740 No, but he is looking to get closer to home in Florida and he wants to call play by play. The D-Rays can't afford him, but the Marlins/FSN can and are looking at him.
December 16, 200421 yr Sutton would be awesome but I would like to have someone that compares to Kasper in the enthusiasm department. As far as Miller goes...... :thumbdown
December 16, 200421 yr Sutton's son is the play-by-play man for Milwaukee and was rumored to be headed to LA if the elder Sutton went, but looks like Sutton (elder) wants to be with the Marlins.
December 16, 200421 yr Steve Kline would really improve our bullpen and provide us with two lefty specialists
December 16, 200421 yr D we have one? Do we even need one? Chad Fox did well in that role in 2003 and he pitched righthanded.
December 16, 200421 yr Steve Kline would really improve our bullpen and provide us with two lefty specialists 635948 does it even matter? Jack wouldnt use Kline/Perisho/Koufax/Johnson/Rhodes/Jesus H Christ as a lefty specialist... he uses the pen the way he sees fit
December 16, 200421 yr Sutton and Miller would both be cool. I think the lefty specialist position has to be the most overrated in baseball.
