What about upping the ante and offer a player they can't say no to? Even if Giambi is a Mo Vaughn waiting to happen and Kevin Brown is just as intolerable as he was his first run with the Marlins, they're still good players who could easily outperform the other available options. That they'd cost a decent major leaguer instead of over $15 million for their comparables on the free agent market makes it worth it.
